Tuition is put in place for a reason. It shouldn’t be lifted because if it is the government will end up having to come out of more money to fund the things that more of the college students need as such as books, computer labs etc. By the government needing more funding that would mean the taxpayers taxes would have to increase without their say so it wouldn’t even be an option.

In 2000, the Board of Ursinus College, raised its tuition from $19,331 to $23,460. This turned out to be a 17.6% increase. Surprisingly, the tuition increase proved to be a positive change for Ursinus College. The college received more than 200 applicants than its previous year (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Other regional institutions such as University of Notre Dame, Bryn Mawr College and Rice University also experienced a similar trend once they increased their tuition rates (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). The president of Ursinus College deduced that the tuition increase affected enrollment rate (increased enrollment). She simply stated that “people don’t want cheap” (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110).

The topic of this paper is the states’ decreasing financial support of higher education, the reaction and response from institutions who have lost funding, and the creative ways public institutions are locating additional streams of revenue. States have been the primary backer of public institutions, but since the recession states have shown less commitment financially while still heavily regulating higher education. As a result some institutions have had to change their practices while others have challenged their state’s regulations all together. Many have speculated that state funding may never return to its former highs. Rather than make an enemy of the state, some schools have discovered new and unconvential ways of raising funds for their institution.

Since 1974, tuition has been on the rise and has reached new heights. One reason why tuition is increasing is because of “the state governments’ unwillingness or inability to raise per-student financing” (Davidson). The government is spending less on college and moving those funds into other categories, such as the military. Furthermore, colleges are spending less on each student than they did during pre-recession (Fox). Even after the recession, the government is continuously cutting more and more from education funds. As the government cuts more from education funds, tuition cost will steadily increase to compensate the loss. Tuition increased from 1994 to 2015 is depicted in the graph on the next page. Drawing a conclusion from the graph, it is possible that if this trend continues, public colleges will approximately reach the same price as private colleges one day. If colleges decide to go on the tuition free route then there will have to be some major changes that would have to be made in order to make colleges tuition free and to give everybody the opportunity to be able to attend without being in debt. DSU was founded in 1925, in Cleveland MS, where this school was mainly a predominately ‘White’ institution. Just like other schools in the Deep South, there were several of stipulations for other minorities to attend the universities. DSU has since then allowed every ethnicity to attend the university all over the world. Now for students there are over 60 programs that they can chose from when deciding on a career, whether its online or in a class room setting. Every university in MS are competing with each other, but in my opinion DSU and MS Valley are just a like when I come to colleges in a rural area. DSU is one of the many universities that offer nursing, and aviation program. The main goal for DSU is to increase enrollment and have a higher turnout rate. All schools will see a turnover rate but school officials are trying to change that any way the can. School officials are targeting students in the delta area, instead of targeting other areas in MS. My advice to the school officials will be to expand their horizons, have recruiters go out and promote the university, which would help boost up there retention rate. If one increase then the other would definitely decrease. Most likely Nobody States University will not decline enrollment so the cost of tuition would definitely be increased.

The modern university system as a whole is an exploitative, capitalist construction. Those within it, whether they be undergraduate or graduate students, tenured or nontenured professors, researchers, etc. To exist within the university system and survive, one is essentially placed in a system that very closely resembles the free market economy of the United States. Academia exists to make one successful in whatever career path one chooses, including careers in the academic world. Specific to academic careers, a cycle of oppression and exploitation of labor exists to prevent any one person from getting too successful, lest they challenge the system and destroy it. Academia forces its participants to work in a very individualistic, neoliberal manner which encourages exploitation of other participants and perpetuates abusive labor practices, all in an effort to preserve a structure which encourages the professionalization of knowledge. And despite being detrimental in various ways to all involved, no one, whether due to inability or unwillingness, makes motions to break down the system because of how completely encapsulating and powerful the university has become.

A student can learn from school in numerous ways, but liberal education is not a way to attract students into further and higher education.
