In the letter to his son, Lord Chesterfield composes a sum of lifestyle advices and and ridicule aimed to judge or change his son's present and past behavior. Some to benefit his own image and others some think sincerely were to hoped to make a difference in his illegitimate sons life. Lord Chesterfield wishes to instill into him characteristics that if and when displayed by his son would bring up his own image as a father or at least not ruin it. In the letter he discusses and reprehend his son for advantages ignored and character yet seen or not up to his standards. Which to the son seems like his father only thinks of his relationship to his son as less than that of family. That he is only giving advice/guidance as a friend instead of a caring parent. To his son this would have a moderate impact as he wouldn't have the emotional connection to fully acknowledge such guidance. It saying such ideals as “ your merit must, and will be the only measure of my kindness” shows that lord chesterfield expect his son to act just, because he will be critiqued by others. This to a certain point shows that he doesn't want his son to behave properly, he expects his child to act properly. This while sounding demeaning and harsh it also shows high expectation ,and the warning by him of how others will view him ultimately resulting back onto himself. Which to was to give the best guidance and teach his son of his own principles such as “ To know a little of anything, give neither satisfactory nor credit: but often brings disgrace or ridicule.” Shows the extent of his father own opinion and as such steps up to want to change his son for the better or give him the reasoning behind why he should strive for excellence. In his letters lord Chesterfield uses a varying array of emotional appeals geared to get his son be more willingly accept what his father is asking of him. By being empathetic to his sons own issues, or but also putting distance as to show he is not pushing his will onto his son by stating he is a friend ,also putting his own personal agenda into the letter or even putting his own personal principles that he wishes his son could pick up on.
