Olaudah Equiano expressed a depressing tone which then shifts to a suspenseful tone to give the reader an image of what his life was like as a slave. For example, “we were conducted immediately to the merchant's yard, where we were all pent up together, like so many sheep in a fold, without regard to sex or age” (Equiano 48). Equiano clearly shows you how depressing it was by saying they were all huddled together like sheep. Giving you the idea that showed you that they had no human like characteristics, but comparing the slaves as animals. Then goes to shows you how suspenseful takes place as a slave, “the buyers rushed at once into the yard where the slaves are confined, and make choice of that parcel they like best” (Equiano 48).
