In the year 1996, Jeff Mangum and his band Neutral Milk Hotel released their debut LP, titled On Avery Island. Initially, the album was all but ignored by the music community, coming from such a small start-up band. Only after the release and success of the band’s second LP, In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, did On Avery Island receive much more attention than a glance. Often overshadowed by its more popular sibling, On Avery Island is a wonderful album in its own right. Jeff himself has stated that he prefers it to Aeroplane, having spent much more time emotionally invested in its creation. Jeff wrote the songs for this album over a 9 year period from 1987 to 1996. The song “Gardenhead/Leave Me Alone” was written on the back of a cigarette pack
The article “The Island in the Wind” written by Elizabeth Kolbert shows that an island can generate clean electricity for its entire population, and hopes the world can too. On the Danish island of Samso lives a population of people who have learned the importance of their environment. In a decade they have switched from being an entirely coal and fossil fuel run island, to producing all of their energy from wind on their own island. Not only are they producing all of their energy yet they are yielding so much that they can export energy to other areas. “ By 2001, fossil-fuel use on Samso had been cut in half. By 2003, instead of importing electricity, the island was exporting it, and by 2005 it was producing from renewable sources more energy

I can't believe I spent $550 on a plane flight from Palm Springs,California, all the way across the country to Duluth,Minnesota, man that plane flight was frustrating especially with the crying baby and the little kid who kept kicking the back of my seat for the entirety of the flight. And then to ride a bike to Tofte, take a break at a lovely hotel, then to Grand Port on bike, my journey just began. Taking a water taxi lonesomely from Grand Portage, Minnesota to Windigo, Isle Royale, I was falling in love with the green trees and the beautiful calm water.Today was my first day venturing to this isolated land, talking to people around here I found that out that in 1843, Isle Royale was acquired from the Ojibwa Indian tribe through one of the

It was another bright and sunny day on Trae Island in the legendary chateau where all the gods lived. That day, all the gods and goddesses met up in the palace for their usual, yearly, meeting. But the chief of all gods and the super god of volcanoes, Galis, noticed that the youngest of all the gods Knipe was not there. But suddenly he heard a loud echo and then saw Knipe, the minor god of self-confidence, protection, and healing, entered.

On the 20th of September, 1783, a family set out to sea. They were leaving their home in the new USA, to return to what they considered their mother country, Great Britain. Throughout the ship’s first week out to sea, the sea was calm, with a good wind. However this soon changed. The family’s second out of four sons turned twelve on the 27th, exactly one week after they put to sea. On that day, the weather took a turn for the worse. The boy was the first of passengers to notice the change - when he went up on deck, he noticed that something didn’t feel right. He felt like there was some sort of change in pressure. He rushed back to his parents to tell them what he had noticed. They didn’t know what to say, and didn’t want to bother the crew.

Many powerboaters and sailors of the waters of the Gulf Islands are familiar with Thetis Island’s two most prominent land features – Moore Hill and Burchell Hill. An exciting and ambitious project would see a new 16 hectare nature reserve on the slope of Burchell Hill, the high point on the west side of the island. Thetis Islanders chose the whimsical name Fairyslipper Forest Nature Reserve for the site, named after the fairyslipper orchid that dots the forest floor with its pink blooms every spring.

The Island Game By KeeLee Stimpson Oh, what I can’t live without. Surely, my phone. Yes, without a doubt.
Right now, if someone were to ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I’d know exactly what to say. I know what I want to major in, who I want to work for, and how I want to retire. I have not stopped thinking about the future since I started sophomore year in high school. It might be an obsession, or it might be the continuous asking of questions like “So what do you want to do?” by teachers and family. Either way, I find it hard to live in the moment sometimes. Yoga, meditation, and exercise have all helped me with this. However, a little island in Ontario has always been my best teacher in how to appreciate the present.
