Seeking solitude and being an individual are not a means of shutting yourself off from the world, but a means of maneuvering and relating to it. Some seemingly passed methods of self-discovery and transcendence are becoming ever more pertinent to seeing the world for what it is and living a fulfilling life within it. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau’s perspectives, philosophies, and composed writings on the topic of solitude’ society, and self reliance serve as guidelines to achieving individualistic ideals and freedom from the constraints of society tends to have on the mind, spirit, and, soul. Emerson believes congregation within society leads to conformity that renders the “colorful fabrics” of our lives plain, without the presence of self reflection and reliance. Self-reflection is a means of discovery of self and soul. self-reliance is a means of pursuing oneself and ones life path. Both of these “skills” are born out of solitude but apply to society and congregation. Here Emerson expresses his perspective of society and how congregation effects the individual who has not carefully reflected on his identity and self. “Tis fine for us to talk; we sit and muse and are serene and complete; but the moment we meet with anybody, each becomes a fraction” (Emerson 380). In meeting without guidance we tend to sacrifice aspects of our self in an attempt to relate to others. Without removing oneself from the stimuli of society and the thoughts of others
