APRIL FOOL? A young couple in the area received a shock this past April 1st when Dawn Schiavone Merola went into labor with her second child with husband John Merola. The two welcomed their first child in September of 1998. Their new April Fool’s baby was born Haylee Dawn Merola on April 1, 2001 in Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Hazleton, PA.

MY UNIQUENESS Over the past few years, local teen Haylee Merola has grown immensely as a person, setting herself apart from her peers. In this day and age, it is of the utmost importance that all generations be open-minded and tolerant. Haylee has become the poster child for such behavior within an already revolutionary generation. Christmas Day, Easter, and Thanksgiving are celebrated fairly similarly for the family; Haylee, along with her brother and parents, attend lunchtime festivities with Dawn’s branch of the family and dinner with John’s. Conversely, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are held at Haylee’s home with some family members from each side. Each holiday that the family celebrates has its own culinary traditions as well – Easter pie for Easter, steak and lobster for New Year’s Eve, turkey and pie for Thanksgiving, and the Italian tradition of seven fishes for Christmas Eve. Food plays a large role in bringing the family together but is not as important as the family connections themselves.

MY STRENGTHS Local teen, Haylee Merola, has persevered through yet another gruesome night of homework, dance classs, track practice, and recreational writing. Haylee has very high endurance levels and can work through hours of physical and mental strain. In addition, she uses her intelligence to her advantage, prioritizing the most important activities to make her way through the day. Also, Haylee has developed her reading and writing capabilities to an impressive level for her young age.
