Analysis Of The Poem ' Patricia Talks

Richard Blanco is a Cuban- American poet who was given the oppurunity to write an inaugaration poem for Barack Obama's second swearing-in. He wrote a poem titled "One Today" that praised the good and unique things about the United States and also the everyday people who's daily routines help to make America the proud country that it is.

Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.

Though out this class I learned a lot, I never really read much poetry and did not realize how much meaning poems can have. I am glad that we read so many different types and styles of poems and books. It really helped me get a well rounded understanding of poetry. My favorite unit was the collection unit. The other poems we read taught me a lot about the other topics we touched on as well. Before this class I never really gave poetry much thought, this class opened up my eyes to how important poetry really is.

The Poem “Introduction to Poetry” is by Billy Collins, an English poet, and it is about how teachers often force students to over-analyze poetry and to try decipher every possible meaning portrayed throughout the poem rather than allowing the students to form their own interpretation of the poem based on their own experiences.

“Once upon a time there was a wife and mother one too many times” (Godwin 39). This short story begins with the famous opening, once upon a time, which foreshadows that the story line will be similar to a fairy tale. It raises expectations for the story that all will be magical and end happily. A typical modern-day fairy tale is that of a distressed character who overcomes an obstacle, falls in love with prince charming, and they ride off into the sunset; living happily ever after never to be heard from again. Godwin however, puts an unexpected twist on “A Sorrowful Woman”. This short story is a tale about what can happen when everyday roles take over our identity. Ultimately, this short story challenges societal expectations of marriage

by using imagery and other literary devices to appeal to the reader. This poem was created to help society realize that there is a much needed change with young men who lives are constantly ending due to gang violence. The poem focuses on an undertaker who specializes in recreating the natural state of dead bodies, ones that have been mutilated. The undertaker specializes in this recreation for a specific group of young men, “gang members”.

Kate Bagley and Kathleen McIntosh wrote a thought-provoking book that compiles the experiences and struggles of dozens of women within differing religious traditions. Each women’s account is unique in how they choose to deal with their personal realities and how their religions are able or failed to help them cope with those realities. Each woman had to make the choice to either accept their religion exactly the way it is, to reform their religious tradition, or to reject institutionalized religions completely and find their own path to experience the divine. The women I am highlighting demonstrate each response and show that there are multiple ways to encounter the sacred. The women’s story that I am looking at first is Inéz Hernández-Ávila and her struggle to reclaim her Native American and Aztec heritage.

Initially, Collins demonstrates how one can weigh a dog’s weight with his method. Concrete diction in the first stanza, such as, “ small bathroom”, “ balancing”, and “shaky” suggest the uncomfortable nature of his intimate relationship with his pet. Although Collin is unappreciated for the gritty toil determination, he praise himself to applauded that “this is the way” and raising his self-esteem by comparing how easier it is than to train his dog obesity. In addition, the negative diction used to describe Collin holding his dog to be “awkward” for him and “bewildering” for his pet. This establish he rather force love rather willing show patience. When holding a pet on scale, there is less hustle because he secures the dog’s position by carrying it. Where as when he orders the dog to stay on the weighing scale with a cookie, his dog only followed him because of the expected reward.

Charlene Hunter-Gault was being forced (caged) into thinking that she wasn’t good enough to her choice of college. The author of the poem was very often treated much differently than how a person that was not of her color would be in the same situation. “Ordinarily there would not have been anything unusual about such a routine exercise, expect in this instance the officials of the universities have been fighting to keep me out for two and a half years”(19). In other words, Charlene was trying to explain how people treated her differently because of her looks. Everyone was conditioned to think that she had to right to be (free) with the white people. Although Charlene does not say so directly, she is trying to express how challenging it was for her to get into a good school. “And no black student had ever been admitted to the university of Georgia in it’s 176 year history”(19). The author is the American wrote this poem in 1973. In 1973, the United States is the economic crisis, the author of the previous simple life attitude, industrious life style. So to commemorate the former people's living habits, the great work of the people.

I need a thesis so bad. Socrates criticizes the poet 's’ speech since it does not really have any other purpose than to entertain, that is not a good enough purpose. Socrates concerns himself with corrupt education and wants to ensure that he (and the city; his ideal city really) does everything capable to produce well rounded fine thinking men (and women maybe). He reckons that his own literary speech be used instead since it would be more meaningful, and in doing so creates three myths to tell the people. Though he may reject the poet’s use of literary speech, Socrates develops his own type of literary speech to use.
