Way back around 410 A.D., there were people called Anglo-Saxons. These people lived similarly to the way we live today in the fact that they did everyday things, they told stories, and they believed in all sorts of things. This essay is going to be about the mind body and spirit of the Anglo-Saxon people.

In Anglo-Saxons time, Anglo-Saxon storytellers told stories of great heroes. They like heroes that have big egos. There’s a quote by Beowulf in Beowulf where he says “Because all knew of my awesome strength,” (418). This is a statement from someone with a really big ego. There’s another quote from Beowulf that goes “I hereby renounce my sword and the shelter of my broad shield, the heavy war-board: hand-to-hand,” (436-438). Not only does the quote show another moment proving that Anglo-Saxons like egotistical heroes it also shows how Beowulf is thinking in that moment. He is probably thinking “Oh I can kill anything. I don’t even need a sword”. These quotes have to do with the mind of an Anglo-Saxon because they show how the Anglo-Saxons liked their heroes. The Anglo-Saxons also had values even though they might have been a little different than ours. There’s proof of this in the poem the wanderer. A specific quote comes to mind, “A wise man ought to be patient, nor too hot-hearted, nor too hasty of speech, nor too weak a warrior, nor too foolhardy, nor too fearful nor too fey, nor too coin-grasping, nor ever too bold for boasting, before he knows readily,” (66-79). This quote has to do with the mind of an Anglo-Saxon because it shows their values in that time period. In order to be considered a wise man, you have to be all these things.
