Animal Farm in Relation to the Russian Communist Revolution

Animal Farm shows the true nature of the Russian Communist Revolution through a

childlike representation of its main events and leaders. Such main participants were able to

overthrow a form of government that had been used for centuries, in a country that was and still

is, a major world superpower. Through usage of propaganda and force, these people bent

the political form of such a major country in a matter of a few years. These main leaders and

contributors to the regime of Stalin and the revolution were not only in control of the people by

Overall, Nicholas was a bad leader who

payed the ultimate price for his faults.

George Orwell knew what was happening inside the USSR under Stalin’s rule, and he

wanted to show other characters in the Revolution as well, to represent all aspects of the history

of the Revolution. Leon Trotsky was another leader of the October Revolution, and he was

primarily related to Snowball in the book Animal Farm. Much like how Trotsky was run-off by

Lenin’s KGB, Snowball was run off by Napoleon’s dogs. Multiple events and timeline

occurrences were exactly the same in nature with Animal Farm and The Communist Revolution.

For instance, in 1923 Stalin and Trotsky begin to disagree, and this happens in the book when

Napoleon and Snowball begin to have different opinions on things. This leads to Trotsky being

run off by the KGB, as was said before, as well as his storybook counterpart Snowball. Stalin

was trying to bring himself to power and wealth, simple as that. He manipulates the people of

Russia who believe in Communism and basically screws them over multiple times in the end.

The Cheka would round up and kill entire families if they did not fall into submission of Stalin. Lenin even called it a “devastating weapon against countless conspiracies and countless attempts against Soviet power by people who are infinitely stronger than us" (Christopher Andrew, Vasili Mitrokhin 29-30). The people of Russia were not even entirely aware of The Chekas existence either. It was very covert in its operations and it would quietly silence all rebellion against the main
