Animal Farm in Relation to the Russian Communist Revolution
Animal Farm shows the true nature of the Russian Communist Revolution through a
childlike representation of its main events and leaders. Such main participants were able to
overthrow a form of government that had been used for centuries, in a country that was and still
is, a major world superpower. Through usage of propaganda and force, these people bent
the political form of such a major country in a matter of a few years. These main leaders and
contributors to the regime of Stalin and the revolution were not only in control of the people by
force, they had obtained their minds as well. In this

Overall, Nicholas was a bad leader who
payed the ultimate price for his faults.
George Orwell knew what was happening inside the USSR under Stalin’s rule, and he
wanted to show other characters in the Revolution as well, to represent all aspects of the history
of the Revolution. Leon Trotsky was another leader of the October Revolution, and he was
primarily related to Snowball in the book Animal Farm. Much like how Trotsky was run-off by
Lenin’s KGB, Snowball was run off by Napoleon’s dogs. Multiple events and timeline
occurrences were exactly the same in nature with Animal Farm and The Communist Revolution.
For instance, in 1923 Stalin and Trotsky begin to disagree, and this happens in the book when
Napoleon and Snowball begin to have different opinions on things. This leads to Trotsky being
run off by the KGB, as was said before, as well as his storybook counterpart Snowball. Stalin
was trying to bring himself to power and wealth, simple as that. He manipulates the people of
Russia who believe in Communism and basically screws them over multiple times in the end.
Much like how Stalin betrayed the trust of the people of Russia, Napoleon screws over Boxer

The Cheka would round up and kill entire families if they did not fall into submission of Stalin. Lenin even called it a “devastating weapon against countless conspiracies and countless attempts against Soviet power by people who are infinitely stronger than us" (Christopher Andrew, Vasili Mitrokhin 29-30). The people of Russia were not even entirely aware of The Chekas existence either. It was very covert in its operations and it would quietly silence all rebellion against the main
The goals of the Revolution and the failure to meet them, is one way Orwell exemplifies his philosophy. Before the Revolution,
During the beginnings of their new communities, Napoleon and Stalin both used propaganda to gain power. Napoleon started with getting rid of his main opponent, Snowball. Once the animals gained control of the farm, both Napoleon and Snowball sought to lead their comrades. Although they worked together, Snowball seemed to have more control. Napoleon disagreed with Snowball’s ideas and wanted to rule things himself. To achieve this, he used dogs he had been training to kick Snowball out of the farm. Napoleon and his propagandist, Squealer, defended this act by calling Snowball a criminal. They didn’t have too much proof of their claims, but the animals seemed too intimidated by Napoleon’s dogs to protest. Over time, Snowball’s false image as a traitor gradually became more accepted and Napoleon’s position as leader grew stronger.
‘Animal Farm’ is a novel based on the Russian Revolution, about a group of animals wanting to rebel against man. Snowball a smart, fair and strong leader gets ruled over by Napoleon, an unfair and selfish leader. This was the first error in the rebellion. Snowball would have defiantly made a better leader than Napoleon. The reasons for this are that he educated the animals, had future economic plans and knew how to keep a fair and smart community.
John Lewis Gaddis offers a different opinion of the one responsible for the Cold War. He believes that Stalin’s authoritarian vision was a minor issue; the big issue
In Animal Farm Napoleon he took credit for the Battle of the Cowshed. When the other Animals disputed that Napoleon had Squealer tell them that they remembered incorrectly. This is like how Stalin took credit for the battle of Tsaritsyn. Stalin and Napoleon both led their people by fear. An example of this in Animal Farm was when the young pigs protested Napoleon being in charge "but suddenly the dogs sitting round Napoleon let out deep menacing growls, and the pigs fell silent and sat down again." Another thing these two leaders shared was their goal to keep themselves in power. They both got rid of their enemies by setting up false trials and getting them to admit to crimes they did not commit. Stalin eventually started trading with the western countries. Napoleon also began trading with the other, neighboring farms run by humans. Stalin makes a non-aggression pact with Hitler. This is mirrored in Animal Farm where Napoleon makes an agreement with Mr. Frederick. Hitler eventually attacks Stalin, and in Animal Farm Mr. Frederick blows up the windmill.
Stalin used the media in order to convince the Russian citizens that there were saboteurs and spies within Russian population. Stalin used the secret police and military forces to carry out the arrests of so called
Stalin like Hitler “used propaganda, censorship, and terror to force his will on the Soviet people. Government newspapers glorified work and Stalin himself. Secret police spied on citizens, and anyone who refused to praise Stalin and the state faced severe punishment, even death” (“The Soviet”, n.d.).
So it was in the Russian Revolution; Stalin controlled the level of education provided to the proletariats and therefore gained power over them. Through this lack of education, the Russian peasants were unable to detect the gradual power Stalin was establishing over them. This is too true in reality – some people are so naïve that they will believe in what they are told, regardless of what events occur, for they are unable to think for themselves, they are unable to know anything else. This is largely the job of the American media: they just allow the world
There are several themes in Animal Farm, some including: Leadership and corruption, control of naïve working class, lies and deception, and dreams and hopes. The main themes in Animal Farm leadership and corruption. Animal Farm portrays the history of the Russian Revolution by retelling the development of communism. In the novel, by overthrowing Mr. Jones, the animals give the power to the pigs who take complete control of the farm. The struggle for superiority between Leon Trotsky, a Russian revolutionary, and Stalin, a Soviet statesman, is portrayed by the rivalry between the pigs, Napoleon and Snowball. In both cases, the less powerful one, Trotsky and Snowball, is eliminated by the more superior one, Stalin and Napoleon. Stalin's rule
Stalin’s unquestionable dominance over the Bolshevik party and their actions highlights the impact of Stalinism
The first comparison between Napoleon and Stalin is how they rose to power. When Lenin died in 1924, a struggle for power began between Trotsky (Snowball) and Stalin (Napoleon). Trotsky was a brilliant individual, but Stalin was just a simple person whose power was based on allegiances with other members of the communist party rather than on ideas. This is contrary to how Snowball was the more intelligent one of the two and all the sheep and pigs were loyal to Napoleon. Trotsky believed in Russia’s attempt to spread communism all over the world as Snowball’s purpose with animalism. Stalin was more focused on the prosperity of Russia, as was Napoleon about the wellness of the farm. By 1929, Stalin had gathered enough resources to exile Trotsky from Russia just as Napoleon did to Snowball.
Leon Trotsky was the chairman of the Military Revolutionary Committee of the Petrograd Soviet. The organization was that, under Lenin’s direction, that shown the overthrow of the state which is called or known “The October Revolution”
This book is a simplified version of the rise of the USSR with the pig, Snowball, representing Leon Trotsky. Trotsky was a leader in the Russian Revolution and helped to win the the Russian civil war against the White army similar to snowball who was one of the main philosophers behind the ideals of Animalism and led the farm animals at the Battle of Cowshed against the humans who had come to reclaim the farm. Also both Trotsky and Snowball wish to spread the word about their revolution in order to help free other subjugated people or in the case of Snowball animals. Then there is the fact that both of their political opponents forced them
How did the characters of Napoleon and Snowball fill in the gap between reality and imagination with a focused scope on Stalin and Trotsky?
After Jones was out of the way, Snowball and Napoleon became the two disagreeing leaders. Napoleon represents Joseph Stalin, although he wasn’t the immediate next leader of Russia after Tsar Nicholas II was overthrown. Just as how Napoleon executed animals who were a threat and “the air was heavy with the smell of blood, which had been unknown since the expulsion of Mr. Jones (Nicholas II was given the name Nicholas the Bloody), Joseph Stalin had his reign of terror called the Great Purge (93) where he executed many of his own people whom he believed were against him. Another striking similarity was when Napoleon agreed to cooperate with Frederick, selling him the pile of timber, and “assured the animals that the stories of an impending attack on Animal Farm were completely untrue” (105). However, Frederick did eventually
