“The tragedy of life is not death but what we let die inside of us while we live.” This quote was once said by Norman Cousin, a famous American political journalist who was also known as a world peace advocate. This quote relates greatly to the tragedy Antigone By Sophocles. In this play we watch the tragic hero Creon, a powerful king, become very arrogant due to his nobility ranking, thus relating back to part of the quote where it’s stated “...what we let die inside of us”. Basically, a tragic hero is an high ranking important and influential person or character that goes through horrible tragedies due to some of their own personal flaws. In the play Antigone Creon has a bad personal flaw of becoming very arrogant due to his power. Creon states to his son Haemon “And is Thebes about to tell me how to rule?” proving that he believes he is always right and no one should question his authority (Sophocles 29). Creon doesn’t want anyone to tell him how to rule, and that he is always right, creating a very arrogant attitude to emerge into his characteristics. He believes that he is the only one right and that no one else can prove that false. Creon’s arrogance progresses throughout this play, later creating more problems. However, this does not create the fact that Antigone is a tragic hero because, since she dies and doesn’t live on with regret, and learn her lesson since she is dead. She doesn't have to learn how to deal with the tragic disasters she caused since she is dead and no longer has to live with the guilt. In addition, one might say that it seems like Antigone is the tragic hero due to her pride in her religion. This pride of hers leads to her personal flaw of being stubborn. She only follows her religion and doesn’t care if she has to break the rules in order to do what she wants. On the contrary, having pride in your religion is not that big of a problem, it can actually be a good thing. It doesn’t necessarily lead to severe problems and personal flaws, thus not being a part of the tragic hero
