Antonia is walking in a clockwise circle around the art area of the center, glancing with her eyes at each table as she passes by. Two minutes going around, Antonia makes a sudden stop and stares at the rectangle table, that is covered with red and yellow paint. Mila skips beside Antonia standing on her left side. Pointing at the table, “look at the table Antonia!!” she shouts and “I am!” Antonia says with a smile. Both girls strolled closer to the table holding hands, Mila’s fingers intertwined with Antonia’s. Antonia bent her torso over and looking right at the paint she blurted “ EWWWWW ITS YUCKY!!” with nose scrunched up. Teacher Sandeep standing across the table, kneels down on her left knee, and uses her right index finger to swirl red paint into circles on the table. “The paint feels very cold on my finger” Sandeep announces. She lifts her finger at looks at it for ten seconds, then runs to the washroom, and starts washing her hands with soup and water. Antonia returns to the table and repeats dipping the tip on her right index finger into paint, looking at it and going to go wash it seven times. “Antonia if you wash your hands every time you touch the paint you will never paint a magic flower.” Mila utters. “I want to paint, I’m not washing my hands ok.” Antonia answers. Mila grins as she puts her entire left palm on the table. Antonia eyes widen, as she looks at Mila’s hand move around the table in paint. Looking back at her hand Antonia smacks her right hand on the table into red paint; she yells “The paint is soooo squishy.” Giggling Antonia puts her other hand into the paint, mixing the two colors around. As she is mixing she says, “ The paint is soo smooth, look, look I made
One day in Lindley Middle School there were two girls in Mr. Foreman’s classroom and their names were Anazia Maisonet-Snell and Lanecia Hayward. So as they were just sitting in class doing their work Lanecia decided she was going to take Anazia’s pencil case because her pencil broke and when Anazia saw Lanecia took her pencil case Anazia said, “Give me back my pencil case” and Lanecia didn’t which made Anazia very upset. Then Anazia got louder because she knew that that would make Lanecia give back her pencil case. Since Lanecia gave Anazia back her pencil case Lanecia didn’t bother trying to take it again.
Wick Cutter and Larry Donovan are villainous because of the things they have done. Larry Donovan left his wife and his child after taking all of her money. He is a dead beat and has no sympathy. Wick Cutter takes advantage of people that are new to the country and need money. He cheats them out of money and is a coward. They are able to do this because of the time period they are in at the time. In My Antonia by Willa Cather Wick Cutter and Larry Donovan are villains.
The central narrative of My Antonia could be a check upon the interests, and tho' in his fib Jim seldom says something directly concerning the concept of the past, the general tone of the novel is very unhappy. Jim’s motive for writing his story is to do to change some association between his gift as a high-powered any professional person and his nonexistent past on the NE grassland ; in re-creating that past, the novel represent each Jim’s retention and his feelings concerning his recollections. in addition, inside the narrative itself, persona usually look rachis yearningly toward the past that they need losing, particularly when Book I. Life in blackness Hawk, Jim and Ántonia recall their Day on the farm Lena appearance back toward her spirit together with her family; the Shimerdas and therefore the Russian mirror on their lives in their several home countries before they immigrated to the United Country .
“Things will be easy for you. But they will be hard for us (p. 111).” These words, spoken by Ántonia, the protagonist of the novel ‘My Ántonia’, give light to the situation immigrants found themselves in after moving to the North America’s Western frontier. This novel reveals how immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s had to overcome numerous obstacles on the path towards ‘The American Dream’ which those native to the area did not have to face.
Throughout My Antonia, the difference between immigrants and native lifestyles are shown. While neither Jim not Antonia is rich, Jim is definitely more well off than her. He knows the language and has enough that he can have more opportunities. Antonia realizes that her life is going to be more difficult and that she will have to work more because of her mother’s decision to move to America. She tells Jim that “if I live here, like you, that is different. Things will be easy for you. But they will be hard for us,” (90) and knows that her gentle personality might be at stake. This also foreshadows future events where Antonia struggles as an immigrant farmer. It adds obstacles to her life which might lead to them drifting apart in their friendship, even complete separation. This relates to the world in how immigrants had a harder time getting going in life. Antonia’s mother has already become changed because of poverty. She is grasping, selfish, and believes everyone should help her family. Jim’s grandmother defends her, knowing that, “a body never knows what traits poverty might bring out in them,” (60), though it is socially unacceptable. The pressures of helping her family led Antonia to not be educated and become a farmer. She is happy, but this leads to Jim being away, “twenty years before I kept my promise,” (211) as he is a successful lawyer and travels. They still have old connections, though being from Bohemia did change Antonia’s life and where it could have gone.
Why do many immigrants make the long and usually costly move to America? Is it the largely idolized notion that Americans are wealthier with better opportunities? Moreover, is the price some pay worth the risk? In Willa Cather’s My Ántonia, Ántonia faces struggles as a young child, including language barriers, poverty, harsh living conditions, and her beloved father’s death. However, as Ántonia grows into a woman, she must face struggles of a social nature, such as the division of social and economic classes, as well as social opprobrium. While immigration to America may open many doors for immigrants, it is equally fraught with obstacles. Likewise, Ántonia must face many adversities after her emigration from Bohemia to Nebraska, which
Hello Antonia, thank you for being a major part of this week’s discussion, and sharing your potential funding sources that appears to be a great fit. I cannot recall if I extend gratitude to you for selecting this population as your idea project, so thank you for doing so. This population being at-risk to abuse and mistreatment is worthy to be address. How sad! Acierno, and colleagues (2010), indicated that The National Elder Abuse Incidence Study, had conducted a decade ago, was the first major investigation of mistreatment among the aging population in the United States and found that 449924 persons aged 60 years or older had been physically abused, neglected, or had been mistreated in some kind of way. I was appalled in the number of elderly being abused and just think this study does not include the cases that were unreported.
Painted Girl put her bags down on the counter, tired from a long day at work. Tizio was great. He’d taken her to his uncles place and they’d spent a wonderful day ordering things from his antique store. She looked around the kitchen. Chinese takeout littered the countertop but no one had cleaned up. She picked up a note.
And as a new year rolls on in January, Mrs bigio makes hot chocolate for all the kids to say that she was sorry for the way she acted. She had one tray of hot chocolate for everyone in Mrs Baker’s class. So Mrs Bigio was going down all the isles giving every single student a cup of hot chocolate, except… when she gets to Mai Thi she just looked at her. “Mai Thi didn't even reach for the hot chocolate when Mrs Bigio came beside her, Mrs bigio didn't even pause. She finished the rest of the isles and had one cup left steaming from her tray”. The only reason she did that is to make Mai Thi feel bad for
I come from a place of proud people and independence; a place of worn church houses and of tear stained Bibles. I come from a place of shackles and chains made of coal that held my people in slavery and subjugation; a place of used needles and broken hearts. I come from Appalachia, and I will be heard. My roots run deep within me connecting me to the mountains where I was born. In my times of trials and tribulations. I look back to my roots and the people who worked so hard to get me to where I am. I find hope In those memories, they give me the strength to persevere and work towards my goals.
She tip-toed back to her cramped room, making sure not to make any loud noises. Her parents were sleeping and if they woke up bad things would happen. She only knew this when she accidentally broke a series of plates trying to reach for a bowl for her cereal when she was five and let's just say that the outcome wasn't fun. Allie heaved a sigh of relief when she made it back to her room without causing any loud noises that would disturb her parents sleep. She crept over to her bookshelf and grabbed an old coloring book and crayons. She colored and colored
Jim Burden:Jim is the narrator for most of the novel. He was orphaned at 10 years old when he goes to live with his grandparents on a prairie in Nebraska. Jim distances himself from boys his own age, instead he takes liking to older immigrant girls. He later becomes a successful lawyer in New York City, but he never forgets his childhood friend Àntonia.
Through using significant images and a fascinating way of telling, My Antonia describes the concept Immigration that hints diverse issues, including the language barriers, the economic problems, and isolation. As a result, immigration is one of the attention-grabbing topics, which should be observed and considered further to understand the life of the strangers in the society and react to them appropriately. In the novel, Antonia left her own nation through no choice of her own to be able to establish a completely new life in a new land. In spite of all the struggling to reach a goal, cultural differences, isolation, and social distinction that Antonia and many other immigrants faced during that time, she was able to choose the life of a particular period of American history when the state was seen as a land of opportunity to create a better life. My Antoine is a work about having the American Dream, and there are specific ideas included such as power, wealth, and freedom, that play a significant role in reaching this goal. The themes that play throughout the Cather’s story also play throughout modern society, with people who look for entering the nation to reach the same American Dream.
My Antonia was published in 1918, two years before all American women were granted the right to vote in 1920. Willa Cather lived in a bustling time where women were heavily vouching for fundamental rights and breaking free from what had been considered societal norms. While Cather mentions the conventional duties and housewives of the time the book was written, her story’s focus differs. “My Antonia’s,” narrative centers around women, many of whom are immigrants, who transcend the gender norms of their time on their journeys to create successful lives, much to Jim’s admiration.
