Case Study
The theoretical lens I took on this case study was a holistic or integrative approach. The distressful variables that are applied Anna's life and current situations cannot be addressed solely based on one theory and require a lens that pulls together several frameworks to address each distressful factor in Anna's life. Due to Anna's age, low socioeconomic status, neglect, possible physical abuse, self-image, confusion, overweight, and hearing impairment, there are several diagnoses that she could potentially display, such as Social Anxiety Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Separation Anxiety Disorder (Henderson & Thompson, 2016). Assessments I would incorporate for each potential disorder are as follows:

Informal resources and supports I would suggest would be to rely on the current family system that Anna has. Formal resources and support I would suggest would be school counselors, private practice therapy, a nutritionist, possible companies or agencies that offer hearing aid alternative or hearing aid design alternatives (Kress & Paylo,
Flashback to 2006, it’s the midst of fall and recess have just begun. The red and whites of the Danish flag blows in the cool wind and inside a girl from second grade puts on her cozy red coat, anticipating the joy of playing in the colorful falling leaves and inhaling the crisp autumn air, but before opening the door, a boy approaches her and says “Your boots are ugly.” The girl takes a second to think and then replies the boy with a cold “thank you,” she then proceeds to go on with a smile on her face, as if nothing had just happened to her. This girl with the rather unconventional reply was me, and the reason this story is so significant is not necessarily due to what an observer would have witnessed that day, but instead the thinking that led me to do what I did.

In Psychology 101, you learn about a personal fable; something that I have not lost. I have always wanted to change the world that I was destined for greatness and teaching elementary school students gives me that power. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Getting parents involved is essential to supporting the development of a child with hearing loss. Counselling parents on the type and degree of hearing loss their child has and the effects of hearing loss is important. It is important to not focus solely on what the child cannot hear but also what the child can hear. Parents will need a lot of support in the beginning and it is my job as an audiologist to provide information and my professional advice. The goal is to help parents make the choices that are right for them and create positive outcomes for the child. It is necessary for parents to understand the benefit of amplification or intervention services so that everyone involved is working towards a common goal. Parents should also be knowledgeable of the services available to them and be prepared to advocate for their child. The school system provides supports for children with hearing loss and parents need to know how to obtain the services for their child. The audiologist can act as a resource for parents at any point as the child develops there will be new challenges. There is a partnership between the parent and the audiologist based on trust and a mutual understanding to provide the best care for the
Lorraine Hansberry once said “It’s simple. You read books--to learn facts--to get good grades--to pass the course--to get a degree. It has nothing to do with thoughts.” Of course it as to do with thoughts, but there’s more meaning behind this quote that may seem a little off to others who don’t study in the depths of psychology. Psychology is the study of the overall human brain and mind. There are many types of Psychology, but this quote relates to Behavioral Psychology which is studying observable behaviors rather than mental processes. Furthermore, the father of behaviorism, or B.F. Skinner, looked into operant conditioning. That is, operant conditioning is the process by which people make responses because they have

The concern about life is a main human characteristic. No matter if his concern is concentrated in himself or in persons or things that surround him and constitute his environment, everybody wants to know why people, himself included, behave the way they behave. Everybody, also, wants to improve his behavior, so as to live in harmony with himself and the society.

According to the scenario described P.M is under enormous stress, due to several compounding “family issues” that have recently developed. Although the physicians in charge of her care believe that she may be suffering from depression, her symptoms may be suffering from other conditions. Early menopause and hypothyroidism are two possible causes for P.M recent weight gain, malaise, and difficulty sleeping. Laboratory studies should be obtained in order to rule out other causes for her symptoms.
“I wanted to try what everybody is doing in high school” Nia stated during one of our sessions. This statement was referring to her experimenting of reckless behaviors. Nia’s behaviors present some deficiencies in her ego functions. Nia’s reality testing and sense of reality seems to be impaired as she intends to engage in all these ideas and acts that she has been fantasizing in her head based of the perception of what others sexual activities are (Goldstein, 1995). The autonomous functions, such as perception and intention seem negotiated and there is also the evidence of a compromised judgement. Nia also presents a compromised thought process as there is no clear ability to conceptualize. Her thought of process is rather primitive/ primary
