Are outsiders simply those who are misjudged or misunderstood? Human beings are perhaps the most unique species in the world. People have diverse backgrounds, cultures and languages. Everyone also has a distinct personality, appearance, and stories to tell. Although humans are all different in their own way, they tend to associate themselves with people who share alike personality traits or share common interests . In this process, there are people are left out of the group and they are considered “outsiders.” They might be shunned away from the friend group, due to “looking to different” or where they are from. Outsiders are misunderstood because they look different, are judged based on where they are from, and are stereotyped.

People assume that the outsider fits into a model of a certain stereotype. Society puts labels or stereotypes on others because they might fit a characteristic or a description of what that stereotype is like. If someone has a characteristic of that stereotype, then people assume that they must fit the model. Using stereotypes to label someone can be harmful, especially if the stereotype is offensive or demeaning. An example of this could be how many citizens of the United States treat Mexicans, Mexican- Americans, or people of Mexican descent. These people often group many Mexicans and put labels on them like “rapists” and “drug dealers.” Also, some people put these terms on people that they do not even know or have even met. Although there are some people do fit the profile, but that does not mean the whole group is. There are awful people in every group, but our society favors other groups. The stereotypes are more targeted after. Just because there are some people who fit the description of the stereotype, it does not mean that every single person in that group should be under that label. The reason why certain people are more likely to be targeted for stereotypes is due to who controls society. The top of the social ladder consists of people who might be unlike the outsiders getting stereotyped. These people think that they have a right to make offensive and distasteful assumptions about others who are unlike
