Are Standardized Tests Measure Students?

“Tests such as these are incapable of determining the level of student understanding and reasoning underlying their answer choices” (Maranto 5).In the quote written above Julie Maranto clearly states that standardized tests are incapable in measuring a student's level of thinking. Although some people believe that standardized tests are the best and just way to measure a student's skill and achievement, I know and believe that these tests only measure the superficial knowledge of students and not their actual knowledge and IQ. Therefore these tests should not be used as a entrance exam to colleges.
A standardized test can never measure a student’s capacity to think. “ Howard Gardner, famous for his work on multiple intelligences, stated he was unconcerned that American children were ranked last among the major industrial nations in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (Murray, 1998). He reported that tests measure exposure to facts and skills not whether or not kids can think (Murray, 1998).” (Osburn 2). The International Mathematics and Science Study is similar to the SAT. These countries can be used as a role model to better our educational system. Tests also keep in check some important characteristics for successful schooling. “Research shows the five common characteristics of successful schools are as follows: a clear focus, teacher collaboration, high standards and expectations for all students, focused professional development, and high levels of community and family involvement”(Levin 21). Tests help check if a student is focused in class. It also involves parents who look at their children’s grades and motivate them to study. So overall a lot of people believe that tests can help produce better
