Argo By Antonio Mendez: Book Report

Argo is an American political thriller movie. This movie is adapted from a book named “The master of Disguise” written by Tony Mendez (a former CIA operative) and an article named “The Great Escape: How the CIA Used a Fake Sci-Fi Flick to Rescue Americans from Tehran” written by Joshuah Bearman and was published in Wired magazine in 2007. The movie is filmed upon the story of escape of six American diplomats, who were captured during the seizure of American embassy in Tehran, Iran in 1979. The whole project was named as Canadian Caper after the joint venture of rescue by the Canadian government and Central Intelligence Agency.

The movie Argo is a visual production of an event called the Iranian Hostage Crisis that happened in the 1980’s. The Iranian Hostage Crisis happened when the U.S decided to take one of Iran’s previous Shah and treat him for cancer. This led to many Iranian people storming the U.S embassy, and taking over 60 hostages. These hostages were held for 444 days before being released. Argo was based on a rescue mission called ‘The Canadian Caper” in which six americans escaped capture and hid in the Canadian residence. There were many discrepancies between the movie and the events, one of the most political being the undermining role of Canada and the fact that they left out many people that contributed greatly in the efforts of saving the hostages.
