Parker Bell English Period 7 Argument Essay: Reason That Teachers Should Carry Concealed Weapons Since 2010 there have been thirty-one school shootings in the United States alone (Black). In this past year, the year of 2013, there have already been 8 school shootings in the USA (Black). Eight school shootings in one month. That number is outrageous and not healthy for our students to have the best learning experience. No student deserves to go to school fearing that they may fall victim to violence at their school. I believe that our schools can be made safer by a law being written that teachers should be allowed to carry concealed firearms in school. It is best for teachers to carry firearms to school because it will provide safety to …show more content…
Obviously all teachers have to go through thorough background checks before they are hired, and then we could add a gun training course to the requirements for a teacher to be hired. If we add these firearms to our schools, many school shootings would be stopped before they might ever happen. As this essay has shown, it is best for teachers to carry concealed firearms. It will provide safety to all school. It will provide security to inner city schools where school gun violence occurs most often. It will also create respect, which will end many shootings before they even begin. Students have died every week this year so far due to gun violence. Let’s end the trend and push for these laws to be put in place. Contact your senators, mayors, and congressmen and tell them that you want teachers to carry concealed firearms. If we have these laws in place, we can end the plague of shootings that has come over our great nation and move forward. Works Cited Brousard, Sharon. "School Shootings are gun crimes.." If a student was injured by a gun that was in possession of their teacher, even if it was a complete accident, the entire school board would be liable and face lawsuits. Carrying guns would also cause a school’s insurance rate to rise. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies may begin to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers due to the high risk that they are putting themselves at. The schools would also have to pay for the guns themselves as well as proper training for the teachers carrying them. Public schools often face budget cuts already and these unnecessary cost would only take away more from new books, technology, and arts
School should be a place of peace and opportunity, but gaps in the system of gun control threatens the safety of faculty and students. School shootings have killed a total of 297 lives, young and old (Slate Magazine). Gun control has been a continuous nationwide debate for many years. It seems that no one wants to take a stance against guns unless they are personally affected. In order to take control of the matter and prevent more incidents from continuing schools need to change. To achieve a safe environment in schools need to educate faculty, safe and students, heighten security, and assess mental health issues.
School shootings are a common occurrence on daily news. Students shouldn’t terrify going to school with the mindset that a shooter will show up with intention of killing people. Ideally, students leave home for school to learn, and not worried someone will come in and shoot everyone. When I was younger I would go to the bathroom worried a shooter would enter my school leaving me alone in a life or death situation. School security improvement is extremely important because children should feel safe and never in danger. Also, schools need better ways of helping children feel safe when they come for six hours everyday. More could be done for students, not only as prevention from shootings occurring but from relieving young children of unnecessary anxiety.
We expect teachers to shape our future generations and teach students how they’re supposed to act in the real world, why not expect them to protect students from delirious shooters as well. The United States are not even top 10 best school systems in the world but let's worry about our education later. Teachers must now learn how to safely use a weapon and not only protect their students but themselves. Teachers are ALWAYS good people, who are ALWAYS in a good mood. The following article “4 reasons arming teachers is the worst idea when it comes to ending gun violence,” states, “Arming teachers is the same thing as arming any civilian – those guns could easily be used for anything but defense and defeats the purpose of creating a safe space in school” (Fratti, 2018). This article Mr. President shows that giving teachers guns would be like giving anyone guns. But how could this be? Teachers are not human they do not get mad from time to time and snap at students for talking over them multiple times. Imagine a teacher having a firearm in the same drawer they used to have the confiscated cell phones from students… not scary at all right? No need for parents to worry with guns in school
Imagine the notion of being defenseless against an individual holding the purpose of wreaking mass devastation on the students and faculty inside of a school. In 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut endured a tragedy that carries historical significance to the notion of shielding those inside of a classroom in a worst-case situation. When twenty-six students had their life taken away during a school massacre, the thought of permitting teachers to carry handguns during class drew more consideration than ever. The safety of the students inside of a school facility may be in jeopardy as manifested in school shootings such as the ones which transpired at Sandy Hook Elementary School and Virginia Tech, where thirty-two students and teachers lost their lives (History.com). While many feel that presenting teachers with handguns may prove harmful to safety efforts, inflicting such standards would provide instructors and students equally with enhanced protection and overall security.
Of all the places in the world, you would think that a school is the safest place for a child to be. Sometimes this isn’t the case. In this speech, I will talk to you about how allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons will be a good idea. I will talk about the advantages of allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon, how allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons is helping other countries, and why Gun-Free zones aren’t working. Let’s start with the advantages of allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon.
During the past few years, the number of school shootings has increased markedly. In 2013, there were 19 school shootings that occurred, taking so many innocent lives. Some may remember the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14th, 2013. It was the second deadliest massacre shooting in United States history, behind the 2007 Virginia Tech Massacre. Adam Lanza shot twenty children, six staff, his mother, and himself that day. School shootings are tragic. Violence continues to increase with these shootings, as well as with violence within the schools among the students. The big question is, how do we protect ourselves from these horrible occurrences? How do teachers protect the innocent lives of their students? One common suggestion is for the teachers and administration to be armed. The premise is that if the school staff has possession of firearms this would discourage shooters, thereby making the schools much safer. However, it is my belief that teachers should not be able to have access to weapons. There should never be any type firearm on a school property, excluding trained security personnel, such as police officers and security guards.
Numerous studies have been conducted to determine if teachers should be in possession of a firearm while on school properties and if this will decrease the number and magnitude of school shootings. Many scholars believe equipping teachers with firearms will be costly and end up unnecessarily endangering more students, but many scholars claim that a teacher should be the last line of defense against a school shooter. The question this paper hopes to answer is how can equipping teachers who teach grades K-12 help to prevent school shootings in the United States. This paper will attempt to answer that question by examining the perspectives of school administration and law enforcement, the impact on student’s safety and education, the
he first main idea, that has been argued much more then needed, is that teachers will be trained to not shoot kids that are acting up. The teachers would be attending a gun safety class. Many (as in people against this argument) say that the teachers wouldn’t attend this class, but a recent survey, conducted by the NRA, shows us that 40 million teachers would like to be armed and would take the Gun Safety Test. The course, that which is mandatory, would likely e sponsored by the NRA. The course that the teachers would be attending, is a 40-60 hours a week course (in the summer time), and the course doesn’t stop until the teacher can pass the exam. The exam is simply being able to hold a gun, reaction time, and being able to know when and when not to shoot. Just recently, 04/10/2017, a school shooting killed two teachers, and injured two students, both kids being injured severely. If those teachers in San Bernardio where armed, they could have saved their lives and those children’s futures. Also in 2013 teacher aids, the principal, the school psychologist, teachers, and 20 children ranging from 6-7 were killed in Sandy Hook, making a death total of 26 people, plus one. That plus one should not be accounted for, that plus one was the
That why the teachers should have guns some people may think that if teachers had guns than the teachers could stop the persons that came into the school looking to hurt people.Yet what people do not understand is that the odds of no one becoming hurt during the chaos of a teacher fighting off the shooter is that someone could get hurt if not careful. Not saying that it may not work the way people may hope it will, just pointing out that the odds of something going wrong is truly high. And there are a number of reasons why this could go bad real fast. Yes some could say this so call reasons can be fix in a flash. Sure the reason can be overlooked and may be easy to fix , but they can still happen.
Should teachers with concealed carry weapons permits be allowed to carry a firearm on school grounds? How would a teacher help to stop or prevent a school shooting? Teachers carrying a weapon would not only increase their safety and their sense of security. It would also increase the safety of students.
The big question in a lot of schools today do to several shootings and terrible incidents is whether or not a teacher should be able to be armed with a gun in case a situation of self-defense. It is a concern from regular citizens to teachers and all the way up to the government itself. Realistically, there would be a lot of problems trying to implement guns in the first place but seems reasonable in some ways as well. Teachers having or not having firearms will probably be decided soon enough, but is looking like they won’t have any in the near future. There are several reasons why a teacher should be armed in a school building.
To begin, I am a student. I am a student that feels this should be an extra safety precaution at ours schools to help parents and other students feel safer. How would you feel to get a call from your child’s school telling you that your child has been shot in a school shooting? How would you feel as a student to know that one of your, innocent, fellow peers might die at the hands of someone that they didn’t know? I can tell you now I know I would be very upset and feel very unsafe. As a high school student life is very stressful. From exams, to friends, to people you don’t particularly get along with, life is very stressful, we don’t need to be worried about someone coming to hurt us or our peers. This is why I believe all teachers should be armed at school.
A number of state lawmakers' proposal to fight school gun violence is by arming teachers, those ideas have been met with opposition. But what many don't realize is that more than one-third of all states already allow teachers and adults to carry guns on school grounds. I personally think, this will deter any violent, gun related incidents from occurring in the future. There could be safety precautions set in place to help this on its way, such as have signs on the schools that say “This School Has Armed Teachers” and keeping the holder of these guns
Currently, “schools are generally safe havens from the gun violence that is so frequent elsewhere” (“Guns in”). A survey by the School Improvement Network found that “91.4% of … educators say they feel safe in schools” (“Guns and”). This would likely change if either students or teachers were allowed to have guns on campuses because there would be more potential for violence at schools due to the fact that unstable and dangerous persons meaning to do harm would find it easier to bring weapons such as guns into schools without a strict policy on guns. This fear would compromise teachers’ ability to accurately teach material and students’ ability to learn and concentrate on their studies. It would also “[inhibit] dialogue by making students and faculty feel less safe to freely express ideas or exchange information” (“Guns in”). Teachers and students should not be allowed to carry guns on campuses because it would compromise the core purpose of education: to
