Argumentative Essay One gun, one church, and one miserable Wednesday night. On June 17th, 2015 Dylann Roof set out for a mass killing spree killing nine victims, including a pastor. Certain rights could uphold gun laws and make it so such things do no happen; unfortunately these tragic things do still occur. However, people who do follow the law and do follow laws help in some of these tragic occurrences. Although these things happen it is our God given right as United States citizens to bear arms. Through the second amendment and other gun laws, we could live in peace and still have our rights to bear arms. The massacre that killed nine victims happened during an evening prayer at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church (Connor, 4). People ranged from 26 to 81, and a pastor of 23 years were all victims of this massacre. Dylann illegally purchased a .45-caliber Glock handgun for this crime (Connor, 2). The purchase was legal despite his …show more content…
For example, in 2002 a law school shooting in Grundy, Virginia, came to an end when a student confronted the shooter (Hunter, 1). Many cases have come up including gun violence; however guns are not the problem, people are! A 2009 workplace shooting in Houston, Texas was stopped by two workers who had their carried concealed handguns (Hunter, 1). People with carry-and-conceal weapons have come to save the day in high schools, middle schools, malls, workplaces, and even in churches. Another example was in 2012 in Aurora, Colorado, when during a church service a shooting was stopped by a member of the congregation (Hunter, 2). It is so easy to point the blame towards guns when guns can help us in many more ways than they can hurt us. This could have been avoided if someone else had a carried conceal weapon or if Roof had been responsible enough to get one or not have on at
This world seems to be falling apart, going crazy, or even taking people away out of the blew. One of the main reasons behind that is school shootings. It tends to happen when people think they are taking their kids into a safe environment. School is supposed to be safe, full of kids talking to their friends, teachers, and maybe petting the psychologist’s dog just saying “hi” to the dog. For the longest time school shootings have been climbing, occuring more and more. Everyday, bad things happen which show how humanity is cruel. (table1, Mass Shootings Per Year) this graph is showing how the numbers every year change. Since the year 1982 and 2016, the numbers really do change drastically.
Unfortunately, the notion of schools being a safe place is no longer a trend across American schools. Disturbing mass shootings in the U.S continue to shock the media. A school shooting is when someone attacks a school using a gun. The Secret Service says these shootings are "deliberately selected as the location for the attack". The reasons massacres occur in schools is because of poor security, violence in video games/media, and bullying. Shockingly the U.S. has the most school shootings than any other country in the world. According to the FBI, mass shootings occur, on average, every 2 weeks in the U.S. While the cause of school shootings are sometimes unpredictable, it is a growing issue and they need to be prevented. Most shooters don’t have mental issues, they have a plan to kill, so there is no singular cause that creates violent people. On April 16th, 2007, the most deadly school massacre occurred. Seung-Hui Cho killed thirty-two students at Virginia-Tech. As Americans, we no longer should turn on the news and witness these gruesome murders. We try to make sense of these murders, but it’s ineffectual. There are measures we can take as a society to help. The number one question in a school massacre is, "why would a person that has a capable sense of mind even do that?” It is our moral responsibility to fix these issues. In order to stop this problem, we need to find its roots.
Recently there was a mass shooting in Las Vegas. A gunman opened fire on a concert from his hotel room leaving 58 people dead and over 500 injured. This incident has reintroduced the issue of mass shootings to our societal conversations. The topic of mass shootings is an emotional one. It triggers the most basic human fear, fear of the unknown. Most people have an emotional bias one way or another on this subject, making it a very sensitive topic of conversation. I will do my best not to offend anyone, if I do offend you please understand that it was not my intention. I will do my best to not let any bias I may have affect examination of this topic. My intention is to examine the topic in a logical manner to better understand the issue. This is a problem that is not going to fix itself. We as a society need to come up with a solution.
There has been an average of one school shooting every week in America since the Sandy Hook shooting. On the fourteenth of December, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, 20-year-old Adam Lanza not only killed his mother in her home, but also twenty children and six members of staff at the Sandy Hook Elementary School. This was to be the third deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. The Huffington Post reports that as of 2014, there have been over 200 school shootings. These have resulted in at least 94 deaths and over 156 serious and minor injuries. And, with an issue as emotive and contentious as the murder of school children, the question has been frequently asked: why do school shootings happen?
More mass shooting in America are more common now than they have ever been before. The columbine shooting is the biggest school shooting in history. It was on April 20, 1999 when this devastating event happened. One of the things that made the shooting memorable is that the shooters shot Christians. The columbine shooting was an awful event. Twelve students and one teacher were killed.
The story of the Columbine shooters, particularly Eric Harris, illustrates how public schooling can serve as an example in which allowing an excessive amount of freedom can have ill effects on others around them. He was fond of writing disturbing stores in his creative writing classes, and these writings were products of his malicious, but unique, character. Had the school system enforced conformity more strongly, there may have been an opportunity to alter Harris’ course of action.
April 20, 2018 17 people killed by a gunmen at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida. April 20, 1999 13 people killed buy two gunmen at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. My point is is that where do these gun laws take place, never? why do we decide to sell these mentally ill people guns when they are causing these school shootings when are we going to change these gun laws, how are these kids getting guns. What we need to do is if people have records of being mentally ill we need to not sell the these guns, if we make it so mentally ill people cant get there hands on guns there would be a big decrees in school shootings, In 2018 alone there where 20 school shooting where people where hurt or killed.
According to President Trump, arming teacher with guns will become the solution to school shootings. Presently, thirty-two mass shooting have taken place all over the states of America since the year 2005. In fact, the most recent occurred the fourteenth of February this year, 2018, in Florida. Nikolas Cruz, the school shooter, previously attended Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and reportedly suffers from mental illnesses which may contribute to his motives.
Columbine. Virginia Tech. Sandy Hook. Pulse Nightclub. Last Vegas. Parkland, Florida. These are just a few of the 150 mass shootings that have taken place in the last 50 years. That’s an average of three shootings per year. If you ask me even one mass shooting is too many, but this is the tragic reality we live in. When something like this occurs, it sparks two arguments that seem to foolishly rival each other. Many demand that people take mental health more seriously. Others call for stricter gun control. My concern is why does it have to be one or the other? Why are these considered mutually exclusive? Mental health and gun violence are huge issues that the media seems to pit against each other as if we can only fix
America is not a stranger when it comes to tragedies such as school shootings, starting in 1999 with the notorious Columbine massacre, when one morning Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold decided to pull the trigger and leave 13 dead and many others wounded. Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012, a reported 142 shootings have happened in the U.S. alone. Because of the Sandy Hook shooting, 20 little angels couldn’t be tucked in by their parents ever again. From this arose the question, how can we protect out kids? There are many opinions about how we should protect the lives of our children, and almost every 2016 Presidential candidate has voiced their plan of action on how to do so. While some believe we
Since the year 2000, there have been more than 188 school shootings reported on both high school and college campuses (Erickson). As each shooting occurs, the number of injuries and death tolls continue to rise. People across the country are determined to find the answer to the key question, “What can we do to keep our students, faculty, children, and families safe?” This question is not easily answered while imagining all the possible consequences. The individuals directly involved with the nightmare of school shootings are campus security, faculty, and students. They all can play a part in keeping their school safe when gunfire transpires among them. To find the best solution for school safety across the country, a decision needs to be made between the
Throughout the years there have been a numerous of school shootings, and they have become more mainstream, this has caused people to stand up to the government for not doing nothing about it. I plan to argue an issue that has been put aside, and it is more relevant than ever. At the start of 2018, there have been many school shootings about 1.25 a week.
You’ve probably heard of it lately, its been all over the news, social media, even involved students walking out to support the cause. Without firearms how will we protect ourselves, most importantly our family? Some find it very controversial, but it's honestly not at all
School rampage shootings, also referred to as mass school shootings, involve one or a small number of perpetrators whose goal is to inflict as much harm as possible on as many people as possible within a school setting. It is a violent act. There is a distinction made between violence and aggression on the continuum of severity . As noted by Bushman and Huesmann (2010), while aggression is an intent to harm another person who does not want to be harmed, violence is aggression with the goal of extreme physical harm which would be severe injury or death. Using this frame of reference, mass shootings in schools are clearly acts of violence whereas school bullying, and depending on the context, school
This is an advertisement that on gun control that came out a couple years ago by an organization called "Moms Demand Action". This shows two kids in a classroom, one with an assault rifle and the other holding a Kinder Chocolate egg. The add asks which is illegal in the US.
