Survivor is a reality show that tests a group of people’s abilities to survive on an island. In the beginning, the participants will spilt into tribes and compete in challenges for reward and/or immunity. The losing tribe(s) will vote a member out at Tribal Council. After the merge, challenges are on an individual basis. The final three participants will face the jury, comprising of the previous participants voted out, who will interrogate them, and subsequently, vote for the winner. The participant with the most votes wins the title of Sole Survivor and a million dollars.
I believe that problems such as ingroup favoritism and outgroup derogation arise from self-esteem issues on the part of individual participants in Survivor.
In Blood V.S. Water, each of the returning participants brought a loved one into the game. The returning participants tribe is ‘Galang’, while the other tribe is ‘Tadhana’. The aim is to win challenges to avoid Tribal Council, where the losing tribe

When Galang won their first challenge, Gervase cheers loudly and shouts at Tadhana. As Tadhana saw Gervase as a threat in being overzealous, they vote out Marissa in an attempt to suppress him and to protect their own self-esteem. This shows that Tadhana is displaying outgroup derogation. Outgroup derogation occurs when an outgroup is perceived as being threatening to the members of an ingroup. (Brewer, 1999) This phenomenon often accompanies ingroup favoritism, as one needs to have a liking towards their ingroup. When an ingroup is threatened by an outgroup, identity and self worth are also threatened. According to Fein & Spencer (1997), when people derogate an outgroup, they tend to feel superior as a result, and this feeling helps affirm their self worth. In this case, Tadhana voted out Marissa to further strengthen their valued ingroup identity and their own self-esteem to make themselves feel
How far is too far? Tom Sawyer felt lonely, unwanted, and irrelevant. Because of his feelings he persuaded his friends, Joe and Huck, to join him in running away to become sailors for a few days, without telling any authorities. Tom's mischievous plan started as a light-hearted joke, but as time wore on the whole town was consumed with fear. The boys received praise from the kids in town when they finally returned, but caused their guardians a great amount of heat ache. Everyone agrees that Tom constantly performed naughty actions and rebelled against any rules that were set before him. But some believe running away without telling anyone was perfectly unacceptable. I feel that Tom should not have run away to become a sailor because
What if your best friend went on an adventure. They had everything they had ever wanted. They didn't tell you or their family where they were going or how long they would be gone. They just picked up and left. Would you respect their decision to not tell anyone their plans? Would you think that this was a good idea of theirs, or would you think that this was a stupid decision on their part? Well this is what Christopher McCandless did. In 1968 McCandless was born. He was born to a good, wealthy, and happy family. He had everything any child could ever wish for. He was smart, athletic, and had a good education. In June 1990 he completed collage. In July of 1990 Christopher McCandless left his family and almost all belongings, and didn't tell anyone where he was going, or how long he'd be gone. Three years later McCandless was found dead in a blue bus located in Alaska. He had died of starvation. He went off and, ¨lived his life.¨ McCandless went out and lived in the wild. While Christopher McCandless died peacefully, the question has arose on whether McCandless was a noble adventurer or an arrogant fool. The evidence from many stories and social media clearly states that McCandless was in fact an arrogant fool. Christopher McCandless was an arrogant fool because he was not prepared, he
In a study conducted by Ford and Tonander (1998), it was hypothesized that when one’s social identity was threatened by a group who is largely different from them, that individual is likely to form stereotypes. This is based
Life involves many losses. There are small losses: losing a football game, failing a test, or forgetting an assignment. At some point, though, all of us will experience a major loss: the death of a close family member, a major illness, or a divorce in the family. Loss is inevitable for all of us. If you have ever experienced grief and loss, or if you are currently experiencing it, then you might be trying to recover the wrong way. You might believe that you have gotten over it, but it could come back even years later. When it comes to grief and loss, there are a lot of components that people do not understand, but today there are many methods to coop that will lead you down the path of healing.
In conclusion there has been evidence to show that groups have both a negative and also a positive effect on its members. It has been demonstrated that some people will cope with the negative effects in an unproductive way by changing their behaviour in way that was detrimental to the well being of themselves and its other members. However the positives can have a very powerful effect on a person in that it can promote a sense of identity, loyalty and
Microaggression is a form of negative communication in which the speaker is targeting a certain group of people. This could be the female gender, people of a different race, or lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender (LGBTs). The speakers behave, talk, or act in manners belittling others. For example, when men whistle or laugh as a woman passes by, they are insinuating that the body of that woman is used to give them entertainment. Similarly, an indigenous American who tells a customer not to ‘Jew’ intends to communicate that the customer should not behave stingily as Jews do. Although this form of behavior is seen as a pure form of an act of hatred, psychologists believe that there is a connection between personality and microaggressions. It is a mental condition reflecting how the perpetrators view the world in four ways; dominance/inferiority,
When you see yourself living out your dream, the thought of what you're most passionate about pulls you in. Passions in one's life change based on what had affected that person. Dreams are defined to change. However, the benefits of these thoughts is that they belong to you and only you. Not one person's opinions matter but your own. Chris McCandless simply was living out his own ideal life, the way he wanted; not to the idea of his parents, his friends or of society. McCandless wanted to escape society and civilization which he felt was tying him down, while also trying to discover himself. McCandless is not by any means a wacko. He was simply defying society and its ideal expectation it holds upon us as a whole.

In the pilot episode of Friday Night Lights, star quarterback Jason Street suffers a career ending spinal injury. In the midst of the chaotic turn of events, Coach Eric Taylor leads his team in prayer: “We are all vulnerable, and we will all, at some point in our lives... fall. We will all fall. We must carry this in our hearts... that what we have is special. That it can be taken from us, and when it is taken from us, we will be tested. We will be tested to our very souls. We will now all be tested. It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves” (Berg). This moment is about more than football, it is about facing adversity. Although Coach Taylor’s intent is to comfort the boys during a difficult time, his words
However, many of the group-based stereotypes are incorrect and generalizing and it promotes further misunderstandings and prejudice. Prejudice is having a false attitude toward an out-group in comparison to one’s in-group. Prejudiced individuals are prejudging without knowing any information about the “Others” (Rogers and Steinfatt).
I believe my character to be more ingroup, they are refer as a transgender woman and a person of color and is supported by many social groups similar to hers. My character is accepted in those similar groups and feels strongly towards those who are similar to her and would have a sense of individuality with those groups. We have ingroup and outgroup bias in order to protect ourselves to others who are different than us, and in order to feel comfort from others who are similar to us.
Every soldier in the ARMY of the United States of America knows the following phrase from the Soldier’s Creed: “I will always place the mission first” (ARMY.mil). The aforementioned is arguably the most powerful line in the Soldier’s Creed and exists in different variants across the branches of the military. The life of a soldier is not an easy one, so it is to be expected that there will be times that a soldier will have to make difficult decisions. Sometimes these decisions will dictate between life and death. However, the Soldier’s Creed and other oaths alike, are promises not only to one’s country and those serving beside you, but also an agreement with oneself to carry the weight of what it takes to fulfill his/her country. In the movie, Lone Survivor, four Navy Seals made the decision to spare the lives of three men which ultimately resulted in the death of three of the four Seals and 16 rescuers. I believe that the decision they made contradicted the idea of “mission first” and a more aggressive decision should have been elected.
