Discursive essay- Racheal Matheson
So far in 2018 there has been a total of eleven school shootings just in the United States alone, all just in the month of January. There are many arguments for having teachers armed in the United States. Some people think that it will make schools much safer for the students and teachers and make the likelihood of an attack far less likely. However, there are arguments against this idea because many people think that teachers jobs are just to educate our students not to security guard them. There are many advantages for having teachers armed in the United States because locations which are armed and have high levels of security, are far less likely to have an attack carried out by a criminal or a killer. However evidence-statistics have shown that schools that

A principle ran out to his car and got his gun out of the boot and held the gunman at gunpoint. This is another reason why teachers should be armed because they can easily stop the intruder from escaping from the scene/from the authorities or causing more injuries or deaths.
There are many reasons against having teachers armed because many students won't feel as comfortable as they used to be around their teachers, this could mean the students wont feel comfortable approaching their teacher. This is because a teacher could be having a bad day or having a crisis and just lose their temper at a student and shoot them. This is bad because students should feel safe and comfortable around their teachers during school time and they shouldn't think about having their teacher lose their temper and shoot them or other
School should be a place of peace and opportunity, but gaps in the system of gun control threatens the safety of faculty and students. School shootings have killed a total of 297 lives, young and old (Slate Magazine). Gun control has been a continuous nationwide debate for many years. It seems that no one wants to take a stance against guns unless they are personally affected. In order to take control of the matter and prevent more incidents from continuing schools need to change. To achieve a safe environment in schools need to educate faculty, safe and students, heighten security, and assess mental health issues.
We expect teachers to shape our future generations and teach students how they’re supposed to act in the real world, why not expect them to protect students from delirious shooters as well. The United States are not even top 10 best school systems in the world but let's worry about our education later. Teachers must now learn how to safely use a weapon and not only protect their students but themselves. Teachers are ALWAYS good people, who are ALWAYS in a good mood. The following article “4 reasons arming teachers is the worst idea when it comes to ending gun violence,” states, “Arming teachers is the same thing as arming any civilian – those guns could easily be used for anything but defense and defeats the purpose of creating a safe space in school” (Fratti, 2018). This article Mr. President shows that giving teachers guns would be like giving anyone guns. But how could this be? Teachers are not human they do not get mad from time to time and snap at students for talking over them multiple times. Imagine a teacher having a firearm in the same drawer they used to have the confiscated cell phones from students… not scary at all right? No need for parents to worry with guns in school
Of all the places in the world, you would think that a school is the safest place for a child to be. Sometimes this isn’t the case. In this speech, I will talk to you about how allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons will be a good idea. I will talk about the advantages of allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon, how allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons is helping other countries, and why Gun-Free zones aren’t working. Let’s start with the advantages of allowing teachers to carry a concealed weapon.
During the past few years, the number of school shootings has increased markedly. In 2013, there were 19 school shootings that occurred, taking so many innocent lives. Some may remember the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14th, 2013. It was the second deadliest massacre shooting in United States history, behind the 2007 Virginia Tech Massacre. Adam Lanza shot twenty children, six staff, his mother, and himself that day. School shootings are tragic. Violence continues to increase with these shootings, as well as with violence within the schools among the students. The big question is, how do we protect ourselves from these horrible occurrences? How do teachers protect the innocent lives of their students? One common suggestion is for the teachers and administration to be armed. The premise is that if the school staff has possession of firearms this would discourage shooters, thereby making the schools much safer. However, it is my belief that teachers should not be able to have access to weapons. There should never be any type firearm on a school property, excluding trained security personnel, such as police officers and security guards.
Numerous studies have been conducted to determine if teachers should be in possession of a firearm while on school properties and if this will decrease the number and magnitude of school shootings. Many scholars believe equipping teachers with firearms will be costly and end up unnecessarily endangering more students, but many scholars claim that a teacher should be the last line of defense against a school shooter. The question this paper hopes to answer is how can equipping teachers who teach grades K-12 help to prevent school shootings in the United States. This paper will attempt to answer that question by examining the perspectives of school administration and law enforcement, the impact on student’s safety and education, the
But as in every argument there are very few reason to not be armed, but as in this situation the why’s weight out the why not’s. The way teachers, right now, are acting when a shooter comes in, is cowardly. The students are more willing to risk their lives to save their friends, that is true courage. But the student is unarmed, literally bringing a fist to a gun fight, if the teacher was armed that could change the game of how the shooting could play out. Either the teacher wins fighting hard, or the teacher dies cowardly. Teachers should be armed for the sake of themselves, piers, and students. Would you rather die fighting hard, or die coward
That why the teachers should have guns some people may think that if teachers had guns than the teachers could stop the persons that came into the school looking to hurt people.Yet what people do not understand is that the odds of no one becoming hurt during the chaos of a teacher fighting off the shooter is that someone could get hurt if not careful. Not saying that it may not work the way people may hope it will, just pointing out that the odds of something going wrong is truly high. And there are a number of reasons why this could go bad real fast. Yes some could say this so call reasons can be fix in a flash. Sure the reason can be overlooked and may be easy to fix , but they can still happen.
My recently divorced History professor seemed to be in an extremely foul mood one dreary Monday morning. Every move and comment the class made seemed to irritate him more and more. Everyone in the room stopped moving and talking in concern for him, everyone except Josh, who is our class clown. He made the decision to make a comment to our teacher that any other day would have broken the ice and class would have resumed. For some reason, on this particular day it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. My professor looked up from the floor and in a matter of seconds had removed a gun provided to him by the school for protection, from under his jacket, and then shot Josh before anyone could do anything to stop him.
School shootings are terrifying and a big problem in today’s society. Schools have added lockdown drills, bullet proof glass and metal detectors. School should be a safe area for children to learn instead of fearing for their life. Instead of buying metal detectors and hiring more officers, there is a much easier solution in order to decrease and prevent school shootings. We have to be more alert about securing weapons at home and being aware of suspicious behavior at school in order to keep children and faculty safe.
In May 2001, the 14th Dalai Lama gave a talk to 7,600 high school students. During the talk, a student asked what is the right response: to a school shooter, he responded “If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.”-Dalai Lama (Bernton) Schools all over America are left with a chink in their armor, whenever it comes the safety of the students in their building. To stop future attacks on students in schools the states need to allow teachers and staff to be properly trained to be armed for the safety of children in the schools.
Teaching at a typical small town school in rural America one day, shots ring out. Active shooter drills come to mind, but what do we do, where do we go, how many students are present? Panic sets in. Thoughts of hiding, running, calling out for help and screaming all flash across the forefront of the mind when a person can be seen walking down the hall with a large gun in hand. No one ever thinks it could happen in a town, school, or church like ours but when the act is committed everyone feels the betrayal. Although schools from elementary to universities have adopted drills for active shooters and have routes with plans drawn up we never know how we will truly react until the time comes. Armed guards stand at the ready at most entryway doors but they are only one person and can not be everywhere always. In a recent study of active shooters for the Federal Bureau of Investigations, J.Pete Blair and Katherine W. Schweit have said, “The second most common incident locations were in educational environments…and the study results established that …these incidents involved some of the highest casualty numbers” (20). Crime is always a threat to education and defending our students nationwide should be a priority. The trouble begins with the fact that the school shootings are becoming more regular. Allowing teachers to be armed gives administration, faculty and students a more successful chance at survival against an active shooter in our education systems.
An approximated 260 teachers are being physically abused every day for doing their job. Any students that are suspected of being involved with a school shooting plan, should be searched by administration with authority. If contraband is found, then they could decide to turn them over to the police if it was felony or involved weapons on school grounds or to find rehab for them if it involved drugs. Locker searches would greatly reduce the risk of school shootings, but other measures, such as more evasive action could help reduce the amount of teachers and students at
My initial reaction after reading the article, Teachers With Guns by Wade Livingston, struck me furious. I recall thinking out loud and trying to explain to myself the reason as to why schools, which I had always thought to be one of the safest places throughout my childhood, had become projecting danger zones throughout our nation. Schools are supposed to be a place where a child can go and learn and not have to worry about being put into danger. I am not in anyway blind to the dangers of today’s society and with the amount of school shootings on the rise; I am in agreement with the argument that something has to be done. However my early response was that arming teachers was NOT the way to protect the campuses.
Shouldn't we give our children and teachers a fighting chance? Arming our teachers and
Over the past few years fatal shootings have happened at schools around the country. Teachers have been in these shootings and they could 've stopped the shooter if they were carrying. Arming and training teachers with self defense and handguns has become bigger thing over the years. Arming and training teachers can save students lives in the future if there is a school shooter (Henigan).
