Gun violence is an issue that is still not under control in America, being that practically anyone can access a gun and own one, illegally or legally. There are various opinions of the topic and how it should be handled. Some strongly back their second amendment right, some are completely against guns, and some have a mixed opinion. I believe that gun violence is an issue that affects thousands across the country and needs to be controlled.
Growing up in the Los Angeles area, I was exposed to various incidents involving gun violence in my community. Almost every day of the week, there was a shooting on the news, and those featured on the news were not the only ones that may have happened. I would also hear about shootings through word of mouth,

It is a community where a lot of veterans reside and there is much less gun violence compared to Los Angeles. Therefore, there are people who proudly uphold their second amendment right: the right to bear arms. I completely understand that it is everyone’s constitutional right, but when it comes down to lives being saved, I believe that lives are worth more than guns. Gun violence may not be an issue for those in suburban, well protected communities, but for those in inner city urban communities, it can be a big problem. In inner city communities, residents must deal with various types of criminals raiding their neighborhoods and causing most of the trouble, e.g., gangs. For example, in Chicago, there were “3,550 shooting incidents . . . and 762 murders” (Edwards). This is just one of the multiple communities across the nation drastically affected by violence like this. With a more conservative administration now being in the White House, the ultimate opinion of this issue is not one that I necessarily agree with. Our current president, Donald Trump, believes that “most gun control laws are a violation of the Second Amendment and should be done away with” (Republicanviews.org). He also has even proclaimed his membership in the National Rifle Association
Gun violence is a big problem everywhere, in poor rural neighborhoods to prosperous urban cities like Malibu, it can happen anywhere at any time. The most deadly cases happen in suburban areas where no one would suspect any thing would happen, these areas are the prime target for mass shootings. Some of the most known tragic events include the Columbine massacre
Alyssa Alhadeff was a member of a travel soccer team, and attended a Jewish sleepaway camp during her summers. She was described as a bright, outgoing girl with a love for athletics. Alyssa was fourteen years old when she was fatally shot by an active shooter, Nikolas Cruz, at her high school. The issue of gun violence is a very controversial issue that splits our country into two opinions--those who are for stricter gun control laws and those who are against them. The conversations about this topic have increased significantly in the past year due to recent events. The 2017 Las Vegas shooting and the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting were two particular instances that shocked and outraged the nation. Gun violence is a fairly new concern as far as problems in The United States go, with seven of the eight deadliest shootings of U.S. history having occurred after 1990. This is a key piece of information, because studies have shown that while the number of shootings has not necessarily increased in recent years, the number of fatalities within each has. Therefore, the actual root of this issue is the guns being used. These weapons are continuing to become more and more advanced, yet the laws in regards to them are not being changed in order to protect the general public. The longer The United States delays attempts to fix this issue,
Although guns are a major problem in the US, it’s important to remember that our nation’s trigger-happy citizens tend to be a problem as well. Guns are inanimate objects with no mind or will of their own. The person that picks up the gun knows who and what will be their target. When taking account of the fact that most of school shooters have had something mentally wrong with them. Speaking on the matter, 2016 GOP Presidential Candidate and self-made billionaire Donald Trump stated that this isn't “a gun problem, but a mental problem” (Scott 2). However Trump is over simplifying a rather complex problem. Mental illness includes depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety, all things that may not be noticeable by someone deciding on whether or
Many believe that as the year progresses, our lives become more dangerous for us to be a part of. However, Zachary Crockett states that the beginning is bad, and “In the first 24 hours of the new year, 264 separate incidents of gun violence happened across the United States” (Crockett 1). He is helping us to illustrate we struggle throughout the entire year, and we get attacked at the times which we least expect them to happen. In the infographic that is being shown, Chicago was reported to have “24 shootings, leaving 3 dead and 28 injured”, leading us to the idea that some towns are at more risk than others (Crockett 1). He is leading us to believe that some cities, like Chicago, face a better likliness of shootings occurring, then in some other cities. There needs to be a better handle of guns in this area, and take caution so that many do not get hurt. When trying to depict other important details, Crockett helps explain that “every day, and average of 112 people are killed or injured by gun violence in America” (Crockett 1). There needs to be a tighter grip on not only the actions of the people in the country, but the weapon. Guns cause a lot of stress and havoc across the country, and if we could allow ourselves to overcome this, then we would be helping ourselves out.
One of America’s biggest monsters is gun violence. When someone mentions monsters one of the top things thought of is gun violence. It’s ridiculous the government and NRA care more about money than the lives of their children. The government and NRA need to stand up and put laws in place to restrict guns. Not to take them away but to make it harder for mentally unstable people to get near them. Assault weapons do not belong in homes of average American’s, so they have no reason to be for sale. The typical hand gun can protect homes, why does anyone need a Military grade weapon to stop someone from breaking in? They don’t. The government needs to step up and stop thinking about money and start thinking of their children and all children. We need stricter gun laws. At the age of 19 I
A body, limp and lifeless, holds to the ground as the United States has again lost another American citizen. Tears roll down the cheeks of mothers, fathers, and community members as gun violence manages to claim victories over the lives of many young people. No longer do the ideas of freedom truly ring from sea to sea as many Americans are suffering over the controversial issue of open-carry gun laws. Rather than equal gun occurrences throughout the country, the issues of gun violence are said to be related to race. According to John Blake of CNN News,“A black person is 6.5 times more likely to become a murder victim than someone who is white; and 92% of black murder victims are killed by members of their own race” (Blake). The controversial laws regarding guns in
In the past few weeks, my class has been working with the subject: gun violence. What does gun violence mean? It means gun related violence is violence committed with the use of a gun. It can happen everywhere. In a school too. It's called school shooting. It has happened several times before. Here is a little story where a girl shoot students on a Monday because she didn't like Mondays. It was January 29, 1979, in San Diego in California. The woman's name is Brenda Spencer. She hurt eight kids and a police officer. She killed two students. When a reporter asked her why she killed them she said she didn't like Mondays.
The issue of gun violence has been plaguing American society for an extensive period of time. In just this year, there have 1,957 people that have died with the use of a gun, and a sizeable portion of that problem is the ease of accessibility. President Obama is tightening restrictions on who can acquire guns, and he is tracking illegal channels where criminals acquire their weapons. Because of his executive order, there has been mass controversy as result since many conceive of his proposal as infringing on the second amendment, but they must realize that the loss of life guns cause is a more pressing concern because it is the government’s fundamental to duty to protect its citizens. This proposal could aid in resolving the gun violence in
Am I against or with gun control. Well I’m with gun control because it can become a help to the police and we can stop crime before it happens. In Austin, Texas in 1966. A sniper in a tower shot at University of Austin students for 90 minutes. The police who reacted had help. Students went to their trucks and grabbed their rifles and shot along side of the police. It was enough to pin the shooter down and allow the police to take the shooter out. Police then thanked the civilians for helping them fire on the shooter.
Many people are talking about all of the gun violence all around the United States. The reason why people are starting to talk about the gun rights or gun control is because all of the shootings and violence. Nevertheless Barack Obama is thinking about blocking or not letting any gun store/ shooting range buying any guns for a while because what’s been happening around the U.S. When Hillary Clinton is talking the guns, the violence it's making people think why are they killing other people or trying to kill themselves. Guns are only for shooting animals on the event or days when the season starts guns shouldn’t be for killing people let the violence go and stop doing those things.
The United States has an endless supply of morals and rights that are heavily debated and controversial. Near the top of that seemingly never ending list is gun control. The United States has had a history of issues with gun control and limiting what kind of firepower should be allowed to the general public. As of recently, the government has tried to further limit guns due to a few mass shootings and constant issues with firearms. But with the limitations, came protest from people believing that limiting the possible weapons allowed to the public denies the second amendment and contrasts with the idea of freedom in the United States. With this cause and effect debate, it has lead to heavy controversy whether or not freedoms should be sacrificed
“The second amendment of The United States Bill of Rights is my concealed weapons permit, period.”- Ted Nugent. Saving lives one by one starts with limiting the purchase, sale, and use of guns in America. According to Alexander Lee, the political and social debate over the question of how much gun control is appropriate and it has been regularly discussed within the last decade. Shootings such as Sandy Hook, and Tucson shootings have raised the government’s awareness on guns and possible restrictions and regulations. Gun talks are discussed with the question, “Will controlling guns cut back on violent crime rates?” Although many guns are open to be sold to the public over 18, there are traditional gun laws that limit who can own them. These laws include sell restrictions to the mentally disabled, the age in which you can obtain a gun, background checks, and dishonorably discharged military personnel. Gun control laws could have a positive effect in America by reducing homicide rates, but at the same time, citizens still have the right to bear arms under the second amendment under the U.S constitution. Gun control laws do not mean the absolute confiscation of guns, but rather reduce the amount of power a gun and the amount of ammo that a gun can hold.
Gun control has been a controversial topic for 2 years now. Due to very recent events such as the shooting in San Bernardino, the need for strict gun control could not be more emphasized by the public. According to, preventioninstitute.org, eighty-nine individuals die because of shootings in the United States every day. Easy access guns are resulting to many counts of gun violence, which is why stricter laws need to be put into place. The current state of affairs is inadmissible and something needs to be done immediately to prevent fewer deaths. Forming a culture of gun safety, having accessible mental health treatment, and having sensible gun laws are all semi-solutions to the major issue at hand.
In 2015, a man named Chris Harper-Mercer shot and killed nine of his fellow classmates, and injured several others. All throughout his life Mercer had mental and emotional issues, yet in the aftermath of the massacre, people put more blame on the gun than on Mercer himself (Healy and Lovett). In the past few years gun laws have become more strict because people believe they are a danger to society. That, however, is not always true. Despite the idea that firearms create a more violent environment, guns should be allowed on campuses because they themselves are not the issue, gun-free zones are not necessarily safe, and guns are not the only potentially dangerous objects.
In order to fully understand an issue like gun violence, one must step back and look at the spectrum of the argument. There are people all the way to the Left that solely believe that guns are the worst thing ever created and want no person to have them. There are also people all the way to the Right that believe that owning any sort of firearm is a god given right and no law should tell them what kind of gun they can own or how they use said gun. There are countless more groups in this wide spectrum that is the issue of gun violence, you also have the group that sits right in the middle, that's where you will find me. The middle group believes
