Arnold Schwarzenegger and the American Dream
America is a place where you can make your hopes and dreams come true. Millions of immigrants travel from many different countries in hopes they will be able to change their lives and live the so called American Dream. The American Dream is when you fulfill your own personal expectations of what you want to do in life and the journey building up to it. One of the world’s most famous bodybuilders, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was born in Thal, Austria in 1947 and portrays an example of the American Dream. Arnold went from rags to riches in short amount of time. He started bodybuilding when he was at the age of fifteen in his native country of Austria. His family did not have a lot of wealth and were empty handed for all of Arnolds childhood in Austria. His home did not have plumbing or a home telephone, things many take for granted today. “His father, Gustav, was an alcoholic police chief and one-time member of the Nazi Party, who clearly favored Arnold's brother over his gangly, seemingly less athletic younger son”(Arnold Schwarzenegger first). There has been numerous reports that Arnold's father abused Arnold physically and mentally. Gustav crushed Arnold's dream of becoming a bodybuilder when he was young. Arnold had a tough childhood and grew up with little money. He decided to move to America in 1968 in hope to be a famous body builder and to change his life around. When he arrived here at the age of 21, he spoke very little English and arrived with nothing. “With his sights set on Hollywood, he emigrated to America in 1968, and sent on to win five Mr. Universe titles and seven Mr. Olympia titles”(This world-famous athlete). One year after his big journey to America, he became rich by winning bodybuilding events and contest. Gustav died in 1972, Arnold refused to go to the funeral and unfortunately Arnold also lost his brother in 1971 due to a car crash. Up to this point Arnold was still into body building and at the same time he was also acting in movies. He then went on to retire in the weightlifting world and attended the University of Wisconsin.
