In the beginning of the story, Arnold Spirit also known as Junior explained what was wrong with him. Explained that he was born with “water on the brain”. Even after surgery, he would have been affected with serious brain damage and had a potential of dying. But he didn’t. You could say he was abnormal. He was talking about all his problems, he stutters and has a lisp when he talks. He talks about him get treated differently, even from a doctor who is white as it says in chapter 1. These are the reasons why Junior gets bullied, he’s Indian (brown skin color) and he stutters and has a lisp. Oscar, Junior’s dog was his best friend. Junior loved him more than anyone. But one day he was shot, by Junior’s dad because Oscar was sick and they couldn’t afford to bring him to the vet. Junior was …show more content…
Junior also loved Rowdy a lot. But he didn’t ever mention that to Rowdy because he wasn’t like that. He is the toughest kid on the rez. He beats up everyone, except for his best friend Junior. Junior gets beat up a lot. His first fist fight was when he was 3 and he only won 5 and lost 102 in his whole life as it says on page 62. Junior was used to it, he didn’t enjoy it but he was used to it. On Junior’s first day of highschool, he got suspended for throwing a textbook at his teacher, Mr. P. A few days later he got a visit from Mr. P along with a very long talk. After the talk, Junior decided to switch schools from Mr. P’s request. Not because Mr. P didn’t like him anymore, it was for his own good. He wanted to switch to Reardan highschool,, where all the rich white kids go. Well he had to break the news to his best friend Rowdy and his parents but his parents accepted his choice. Rowdy wasn’t happy with Junior’s decision. Junior insisted for Browdy to come but he refused. Browdy was devastated but Junior made the switch without Browdy anyways. His first day at Reardan, he punched a guy named Rogers in the face, he made his nose bleed like
A 1. Junior was born with too much cerebral spinal fluid in his skull. He had 42 teeth’ instead of 32.The other kids on the reserve called him a retard and beat him up. That’s why Junior thought himself as a member of “The – Black – Eye - Of – The – Month – Club.
In Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Junior is a young American Indian that is shy and has low self-esteem, and has a few issues physically and his surroundings. He has a best friend named Rowdy. Rowdy is rude and has no emotion to any situation. What many people at the reservation don’t know is that Rowdy and Junior have real problems at home with their parents. The differences between Rowdy and Junior are the family and the personalities.
There are many ideas about what or who the Devil is, even among believers. The number of differing sources and translations have led to plenty of inconsistencies, rumors, and assumptions surrounding the Prince of Darkness. Throughout the short story “Where Are You going, Where Have You Been?”, Arnold Friend is seen as a symbolic Satan. Joyce Carol Oates uses dialogue, characterization, and plot to show the readers how Arnold embodies features of a symbolic Satan.
In Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? Joyce Carol Oates uses characterization to foreshadow that Arnold is a kidnapper and that Connie gets Kidnapped. Arnold Friend is portrayed as a manipulator, which foreshadows that he will eventually do something like, kidnap Connie. Connie is portrayed as vain, which foreshadows that she will be a victim similar to getting kidnapped. Connie decided to go out with her friends. She spots a demonic looking man, across the street, who's looking at her. Connie, who's at home alone, sees a car pulls up in her driveway and in the gold, slogan covered, Jalopy are two male strangers. When she goes out to see who they are, what they want, she see’s that it’s the strange man that was staring at her when she was out with her friends. When you normally see strangers/strange people outside your home, you do nothing and stay inside. When she went outside you can tell that something is wrong. She will get kidnapped.
I became extremely uncomfortable with Arnold Friend the moment he pulled into Connie’s driveway and said, “I ain’t late, am I?” (592). Friend was a complete stranger to Connie. She did not know him, nor did she know what he wanted. She acted calm and unbothered, not showing one ounce of interest in him. Furthermore, Arnold
Throughout the story Arnold's traits change, which makes him seem as though he is not who he says he is. When Arnold first arrives at Connie’s home, he acts as though they had met before. However, Connie repeatedly says, “Look, I don’t even know who you are” (654). Although Connie keeps saying this, Arnold continues to act like nothing's wrong. Later in the story he seems to break his previous character, and Connie notices. “He spoke in a simple lilting voice, exactly as if he were reciting the words to a song” (656). His mannerisms change here because he realizes Connie has figured out that something is off about him. He changes his mannerisms from being an eighteen year old friend to being an aggressive man. “She looks out to see Arnold Friend pause and then take a step toward the porch lurching. He almost fell. But, like a clever drunken man, he managed to catch his balance” (659). His illusion of being an eighteen year old drops here. Oates is able to use Arnold’s mannerisms as a symbol to contribute to the theme because he first acts one way, only to act another the next. First impressions are not always correct and they may not be as they
Another thing is that Junior always believed in himself .He always had things stopping him, for example, he was bullied in school often ,his dad was alcoholic, and his mom

He decides to go to school in Reardon because he wants to make something of himself. He suffers great hardship and tragedy during his freshman year in high school at Reardon. His father is an alcoholic and cannot always be relied on for support. He lives with his family and they have barely enough to live on from day to day. Both his older sister Mary and his grandmother pass away not long after each other. The two women were extremely close to him and he has trouble accepting their deaths. They were his confidants and people that allowed Arnold to be himself when he was around them, giving him advice, and loving him for who he was. This feeling of tragedy and heartbreak shows the novel's ability to make the reader feel more connected to the difficulty of Arnold and his suffering. It makes us feel like we are there with
However, with the words of Mr. P in Juniors head he overcame this disinclination and went through with going to Reardan. Junior became more determined than ever to succeed,Even with an easy way out and even as his dad said, “‘You[Junior] don’t have to do this,’ he[Juniors Father] said. ‘You can always go back to the rez school.’ ‘No,’ I[Junior] said. ‘I have to do this’”(Alexie 54). The theme of identity is a major part of the novel. Junior is constantly trying to figure out who he is. Junior knows he has a lot of problems with him because of his brain is a little damaged. He knows that when he has seizures. His brains get damaged more than what it is. ‘First of all, I had seizures. At least two a week. So I was damaging my brain on a regular basis. But the thing is, I was having those seizures because I already had brain damage, so I was reopening wounds each time I seized.
