As of right now, the measured water levels at Virginia Key, Fla., are about eight inches above predicted levels (Washington Post). The numbers surrounding climate change are now starting to become serious and people should be worried for their lives. While Climate Change is a main issue in the world, the problem usually goes overlooked.
Climate Change is the change in climate patterns and this problem has been weighing around us since the 20th century. “The scientific consensus reached in 2007 by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is that warming of the Earth’s climate system is unequivocally taking place and that such warming will affect sea levels" (Coastal Council, section 1). The problem with climate change

Over the past decade, the floods have been striking a lot more frequently than they used to. The state of Florida is predicted to soon be completely underwater and if nothing is done to help this issue, then it will only spread and soon the entire world will be under water. Climate change has been drowned out in the US presidential primary elections (Plester). Since many Americans are aware about the issue of Climate Change, many of them also refuse to believe that it 's happening. They tend to push it away which is why it 's not the most discussed topic at presidential campaigns or debates. Climate Change, otherwise known as Global Warming, has been a growing factor in Florida and should be taken into accountability. My research proposes that the state of Florida should cut down on fossil fuels, invest in an infrastructure upgrade, and residents unplug their electronic devices whether they’re on/being used or not.
The beautiful and always sunny state of Florida may not be known as the “beautiful” state anymore. With the effects of climate change headed straight their way, the state might be completely taken away by the seas. Although there are many factors contributing to climate
Hussein 3 change, Fossil Fuels have without a doubt been at the top of the list. A Fossil Fuel is a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. Many scientists agree that the “greenhouse effect,” otherwise known as fossil fuels,
The state of Florida is the region most susceptible to the effects of global warming in this country, according to scientists. Sea-level rise alone threatens thirty percent of the state’s beaches over the next 85 years. Climate change and global warming refer to the body of scientific evidence showing that the earth’s environment is warming due to human activity, including the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. It is accepted science all over the world. Climate change in Florida has many effects such as the increase of our sea level and global warming this issue will cause a dramatic change in 2050.
Florida’s environment is a sub-tropical atmosphere, with hundreds of species of animals. Along the coast is were Florida’s natural wildlife and vegetation thrive; however, Florida has a serious issue that impacts its coastal environment. Each year global warming contributes to rising sea levels across the globe. Although Florida’s Coastal environment has survived for thousands of years, the increasing sea level along the gulf coast over recent years, has caused severe damage. Additional research is needed to understand the impact of rising waters on Florida’s Coastal eco-system.
In the article “Climate change in Hawaii and U.S Tropical islands” written by EPA, informs the audience that island communities and ecosystems face uncertainty as a result of the negative effects brought on by one of the most controversial topics debated today. Climate change. Islands, like Hawaii, Guam, and the Caribbean, are most vulnerable to the harsh effects of climate change. The reason for this is because islands are small and the way their infrastructures are set up make communities almost directly affected. One of the most important things that are affected is the weather. In areas where precipitation was generous, rainfall is actually decreasing while drier areas see an increase in rainfall. Less precipitation also means less available water resources because
As it stands today the U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico is losing more and more land; the amount of land lost each year may seem relatively small to the average person, but to scientists who understand the unprecedented rate at which this is happening, there is reason to be alarmed. On the U.S. coast of the Gulf of Mexico there are more reasons for the rising sea level than simply global warming and melting ice sheets or ice caps. In the Mississippi delta, for example, the oil industry is taking so much fluid (oil) out of the ground that the land is sinking and compacting further. There is also a decrease in the amount of sediment reaching the delta due to many man-made structures, such as levees, drudging, dikes, and
Climate isn’t the only thing changing, our environments are changing too. Our lakes are becoming polluted and eutrophic (Scavia et al.), which causes the overgrowth of algae and death of many of the species found within the lakes. Here in Miami, water has an important role in the value of housing by real estate buyers. (McCormick et al.) Imagine building two houses of identical shape and size. One house is built around a neighborhood devoid of water sources and the
Since 1880, records show that the sea level has bone up 8 inches. If it goes up six more inches, as the current studies indicate could happen within 20 years, South Florida’s flood control would be devastated. In South Florida, taxpayers are already paying the price for climate change as salt-water pushes through porous bedrock into coastal drinking-water supplies, and rivers and canals choked by heavy rains have a harder time draining into the ocean.
Miami, Florida experiences a great amount of natural disasters; however, one of the largest disasters Miami fears is affects of global change. Rising global temperatures scares most environmentalist in the Miami area, because rising temperatures results in rising sea levels. So, what is the problem with rising sea levels? Well, environmental specialist has made predictions that the rising sea levels could submerge the beaches of Miami.
Most people wouldn’t pay any mind to care about coastal resilience and the sea-level rise in the Tidewater area of Virginia. However, they are very important to the community and its development. In the past I was one of those people as well until I knew how much the Tidewater area could be affected by an extreme weather storm or pipe malfunction. Growing up in Virginia Beach I've always questioned why the houses in Virginia didn’t have basements. Because Virginia's elevation is approximately 5,729 feet, the average elevation is 12 feet above sea level, it's considered below sea level. The Tidewater area in Virginia is known for flooding when there are rain storms or other serious weather conditions as well. This is not only because of Virginia's elevation level, but also because of the sewage and waste system.
The rise of sea levels are projected to increase warmer waters from one and a half to two degrees in Central North Pacific in 2050, 1.9 to 2.6 degrees in Northern Islands, and also two to five degrees in the Caribbean at the end of this century. This rise of temperature decreases the life of ecosystems in the ocean and resulting in less freshwater for
Irrespective of its cause, the impacts of climate change include more frequent and severe weather, higher death rates, dirtier air, higher wildlife extinction rates, and higher sea levels (IPCC, 2014). Although each of these impact areas are significant and worthy of further discussion, it is the ramifications of sea level rise that brought me to discuss climate action today.
Dutch expert Henk Ovink once told New Times that “Miami will no longer be a land city, but a city in the sea.” (Weiss, 2015). There has been a rise of 10 inches in sea levels in the 19th century. As of today, the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico of the United States are the two areas that are more prone to sea level rises (Infographic, n.d.). Miami is the fourth-largest population in the world that is susceptible to this predicament. On top of that, it seems that floods are becoming more frequent and more damaging than ever. It is estimated by the end of the century, Miami can get another rise of 6 to 10 feet of water (McKie, 2014). There are clear signs of the tides taking effect in the city. Homes and shops are being surrounded by water in
Miami-Dade County in Florida has long been a national famous spot for the risk of sea level rise and the amount of exposed assets. According to the National Wildlife Federation report, Miami is facing up to a $3.5 trillion loss by 2070, due to sea level rising caused by climate change . Global sea levels are raised by warming oceans, melting glaciers and ice sheets. Water can reach any level through various combinations of tide, storm surge and sea level rise. The common elevation above the local high tide line is dynamically set to be three feet based on historical average of the highest tide level each day from 1983 to 2001. Land below three feet in Miami is facing high coastal risk and social vulnerability for a 73 percent risk of at least
Climate change is the term used to describe the warming of the average surface temperature on earth. Climate change; often referred to as the general term global warming, is a topic that often inspires fierce debate among those on both sides of the issue. One thing those who are pro and those that are con both agree on is that the temperature on earth has increased over the past century by an average of 1.4 degrees. The big debate on the two sides is if the warming temperatures are caused by human activities and if it is not stopped it will have dire consequences (the pro side) or if it is the result of natural causes and the earth’s surface will find ways to adapt such as crops becoming more heat resistant (the con side).
Climate change is one of the biggest problems the whole world is collectively facing. Even though climate change is partially caused by the natural cycles of Earth, humans I think are still a major part of it and I think that we can do more to protect the environment that we live in. Climate change happens when temperatures increase dramatically. When climate change causes temperature rises many environmental problems can occur here on earth . Temperatures rising can result in more floods, droughts, or flooding rain, as well as more frequent and severe heat waves which can cause wildfires. Oceans and the Antarctic Ice Glaciers have also experienced changes in oceans that are rising temperatures and are becoming more acidic. The Antarctic ice glaciers are melting and sea levels are rising destroying many habitats along the ice glaciers such as penguins and polar bears. As these changes frequently occur in future decades, they will likely present challenges to our society and environment.
Climate change is one of the biggest and controversial issues facing the world today. Climate change refers to the change in climate which can be attributed directly or not directly to human activity which alters the composition of the global atmosphere. Climate change is a problem that needs to be addressed. If climate change is not addressed, there will be an increase in higher temperatures, and with the increase in higher temperatures, the oceans will rise, and this will affect the vegetation. In addition, climate change puts wildlife because if the warming continues, many Earth’s species will die. Climate change especially due to global warming may lead to increased risks of floods, droughts and fire and this is a threat to humanity. Higher temperatures leads to an increased amount of evaporation leaving the land dry thus droughts and these dry areas are susceptible to fires. Also, when the rains come, the dry areas that have been impacted by droughts will be vulnerable to floods and this can wash away houses, livestock and even cause a number of deaths. Therefore, climate change is a global problem.
