. According to activist Assata Shakur, “Black Americans have no genealogical blueprint from which to draw a family history or bloodline, no accurate records kept, and no way effectively to trace our roots without hitting a dead-end of red tape or a white family tree. Without these records, we have no way of knowing our true relatives in America or Africa” (Assata
Knowing where your ancestors come from can sometimes be a difficult thing to handle and understand. If you have a notion of yourself before you receive actual news as to where your bloodlines reside, It shatters your previous thoughts and causes you to feel like an outsider. You begin to question your cultured norms and habitual daily tasks. After reading the story “Color Lines” by author Ralph Eubanks, I was able to take away that in the 1950’s and 1960’s, “…The American South was a place where the idea of race and identity determined who you were and your place in the world – You were either black or white.” Ralph talks in his story about how dangerous it was to be related to white people: severe . Severe social consequences awaited any black
Adnan Syed was a golden boy to people; he was smart and loved by everyone. He never thought he’d be convicted of his ex-girlfriend’s murder, neither did anyone else. In fact, when he first received a call from the cops regarding Hae’s disappearance he brushed it off, more scared at that fact that he was high on marijuana and talking to a police officer. He thought Hae had just ran off to California, just like everyone else. However, when they found her body in a park notorious for being a body dump his whole world turned upside down. Soon after this a friend of his, Jay, confessed to the police into helping Adnan with Hae’s murder which then put Adnan behind bars. However, was Jay’s testimony true? Unfortunately Adnan’s case has many flaws and lies to it, and the true answer still remains; is Adnan Syed actually innocent or guilty all along?
Tupac Amaru Shakur was a very influential person who overcame many difficulties. Tupac was a rapper of truth that spoke about the things that go on in the “Hood” and the unjust police. He was treated differently because he was black and was even arrested for jaywalking. After he was arrested he was beaten by the cops who wanted him to “learn his place”(Joseph 29). This shows how bad Tupac had it because he was African American. Tupac died an early death at 25 because of a brewing rivalry between the East and West Coast rappers. Shakur was a person who would stand up for what he believed in no matter the cost and died fighting for that. He never let anyone win a battle that he was determined to win and always knew what he was fighting for. His mother was the same, as a loyal member of the Black Panther Party, a group that protected all African Americans from police brutality. Tupac was literally born to be a fighter and carried on his mother's legacy. Despite his rough life, Tupac Shakur became one of the most influential rappers of all time.
Tupac Shakur was one of the most influential artist of our last decade. He not only made several albums, but was also a large role in many films and a poet. Millions of people bought and still buy his albums. He was a pioneer to gangster rap, and he sang about things that mattered. Although, he was a role model and was admired by many, he also had a lot of enemies, and in the end, his enemies over powered his fans by taking his life. Some say that he may still be alive, but no one really knows.
Assata Shakur was born on July 14, 1947 her real name is Joanne Deborah Byron, after she was born her parent divorced. She was living with her mother, aunt and her grandparents in Wilmington North Carolina. As a child she spent time working with her grandparents in a restaurant they own by the beach. Her grandparents instilled in her the love for written word, and she spent a great deal reading to satisfy her imagination. Her family tried to infuse in her a sense of dignity, “you are as good as anyone else”, also not to let anyone said that they’re better than her. Shakur never like her real name Joanne she felt that she was not an African American and she should go back to Africa, because of
Aaliyah was my best friend, we told eachother everything, I was there with her when she first recorded her first song, we sang together, we even wrote a song together, i thought of her like a little sister, little did I know of the short time I had with her. I remember when I first heard of her, she was performing in Las Vegas with the famous singer Gladys Knight. You should have seen my face full of shock and awe as I heard this eleven year old’s voice, the way she hit all the right notes, and how her voice blended perfectly with Gladys was amazing. From that point on I knew she was going to be a superstar, and that I wanted her, no needed to have her in one of my albums. Three years later, yet again she surprises me by her debut album with
Desi Arnaz was an extremely famous actor and musician who was born in Cuba, but is technically an American in terms of Nationality. Desi was born on March 2, 1917 in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. During his earlier health complications, many hoped and prayed that all would pass and he would be fortunate enough to be healthy once again, but sadly, that was not the case. When Desi was very young, his life was not as great as it was going to become even though he was born into a very wealthy family.
Together my family tree or Genogram and I see why it is important to know who we are and where we come from. I am an African American and both my parents are of African American decent. In the African American culture, many of our ancestors came to America by capture and not by choice. It is said that many African Americans were slaves and were a part of slave trade that was increased between the 15th and 19th centuries (Bennett, 2003; Van Sertima, 1976). Many African Americans were brought here to make their white or European owners money and cause them to be prosperous in areas of agriculture. There were white indentured servants, who could have worked to till the ground and make the harvest plentiful, but it wasn’t enough, so plantation owners saw it profitable to use African slaves as a solution to
Assata Shakur has the most direct commentary out of all of the activists that we have

This book was about a lady named Assata Shakur and she was accused of something she didn’t do. Assata was a black legend and she is now living in Cuba in a asylum. This story tells Assata Shakur’s life up to her arrest and escape to Cuba. Assata was born in New York and lived in North Carolina with her grandparents. Assata was raised to be respectful to the people that respected her and to stay true to herself. This helped her through the things she faced as a black woman in a racist society. She was tricked into believing she was worth less than what she was because of the color her skin was. This led to hatred and suspicion of all white people. The arguments she had with her mother led to her running away and because of that she had became
First, this dude call Minister Farrakhan the devil “If Lucifer had a son it be Louis Farrakhan”. Secondly, the minster is a positive role model for black men. Here is another black man, displaying self-hate, toward himself and his own people. Not to be cynical, this is a brother who probably listens to country music, and will attend a NASCAR event; further, I might assume is married to someone not of this race. However, what I found disturbing are his use of certain words; such as devil, Lucifer, hate, anti-Semitic, and racists. His views and opinions are more disconcerting because his the chief of police in a major city, I would be more afraid him than white officer. He would deny the minister protection in his city, however, probably
