Atticus Finch is a lawyer and father of Scout and Jem. He doesn't win much money since his clients are poor. As a single dad, he is far from perfect and makes many mistakes when raising his children but Atticus is a voice of ethical courage in the novel. He always stands up for what is right even if it means facing the worst. In contrast to the town, he supports racial equality and has been appointed as Tom Robinson's defense attorney in his trial. He is determined to do a good job at it even though he knows he is going to lose because of the racism since everybody in the town is racist from one degree to other. Atticus teaches his kids the lesson that true bravery is when you keep fighting and persevering when you know you can't
