Atticus Finch is a loving father who uses Christian values and instills good morals in his kids Jeremy Atticus "Jem" Finch and Jean Louise "Scout" Finch. While raising his children, he tries to get them to understand not only how they should behave, but why they should behave that way. However, in Maycomb County not everyone seems to have that mindset. Others like the Ewells ' and Cunninghams ' have prejudice against black people. Atticus Finch stands out as an exceptional father compared to Bob Ewell and Walter Cunningham Sr. as he possesses the qualities of racial acceptance, compassion, and forgiveness reminding the reader that a fair conscience and good parenting is not race specific. Over the course of the book, they all go through many hardships, one of the main ones being Tom Robinsons ' trial. The Finchs live in Maycomb County (where the population is mostly comprised of Whites), and are ridiculed since Atticus was defending a black man in court. During that time, he gets the opportunity to show his kids the difference between right and wrong. For example when Bob Ewell had approached Atticus, was cursing at him and spat on his face. In Part 1 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee introduces Atticus Finch as a father who rejects ideas or practices of racism. At school, Scout hears Cecil Jacob shout that her father, Atticus, is defending ‘niggers’. Later that day, when Scout asks her father what Cecil meant, Atticus explains that he is defending a Negro named Tom Robinson. Scout was stunned by his unexpected response. When Scout asks why, Atticus responds, “I’m simply defending a Negro… for a number of reasons. Atticus Finch, one of the important characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, is portrayed as a lawyer and a single parent striving to raise his children to see the good in people within Maycomb’s racist community. Atticus says that people never really understand someone until they put themselves in that person's shoes and see things their way. Atticus is in a different mindset than the rest of Maycomb and does what he believes is morally right, even if it means putting his family in jeopardy. Therefore, Jem and Scout get taunted and discriminated by the xenophobic children at school such as Cecil Jacobs, who declares that “their father defends n****” . Although Atticus is aware of the consequences, he will face from helping this innocent man and is still willing to do it.
The relationships established by Atticus Finch with his children, the Ewells, and the rest of the town, including the black community, are a large reason why he is known as the moral center, and why it seems all immoral conflict revolves around him. The reader sees it play out in the plainest terms with his children. He is their father, and they respect him as such, but their respect for him surpasses their paternal relationship with him, demonstrated by how they refer to him as Atticus instead of “Father”. We see him teach Scout how to read, and the amount of time he spends with his children, even though the majority of the novel takes place during an important court case in his career. Along the way, he teaches them lessons, like how it’s
