Hatred, ignorance, immorality, these traits run rampant in any common society, however it takes a specific type of person to elevate some of this animosity. This person must possess high moral standards as well as integrity and inner strength. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird we see many different moral codes, some proved decent but most were abhorrent. The patriarch of the Finch family, Mr. Atticus represents morality and reason in Maycomb and embodies the idyllic model for all he meets. This ranges from the way he teaches his children to the way he converses with the other towns people. Atticus Finch is a truly moral character because of his compassion, understanding and wisdom.
Atticus has a strong sense of empathy not just regarding his personal relationships but also with his clients, even though they may have allegedly done amoral things. He believes in justice and the justice system to his core, working in the belly of the beast to change a system of oppression and bias. Knowing before he begins that Tom Robinson will be convicted, this fact does not stop him from giving Tom the strongest defense he can possibly manage. Even when it seems as though all hope has vanished; he sweeps in to control and neutralize any situation. He not only teaches his children important life lessons, but he also fights tooth and nail for his clients no matter how innocent or guilty they may seem. While approaching muddled topics such as race relations with his children, he remains able to accurately respond to virtually every threat. Continually negative things occur in his life; however, he retains his capability to ease any tension within a crowd.
