Bad Leadership In Antigone

“There is no happiness where there is no wisdom; …proud men in old age learn to be wise.” Choragos narrated at the end of the play Antigone (41). Short plays such as Antigone are exemplary literatures that contain a vast amount of ethical issues, therefore enforcing critical thinking. Antigone, a tragic drama play, was created by Sophocles before 441 BC. The well written play dictates the story of a young woman who is charged for burying her brother as a representation of honor and the thoughts of a stubborn king. Creon is a self-centered character that is after Antigone and does everything in his power to murder her. Finally, the play illustrates that bad leadership that involves and leads to vanity, murder, and oppression.
Creon is the powerful king who rules the state after the death of Oedipus, with his ruling power he clearly shows throughout the play a sense of vanity. It turns the situation to a worst degree, because it seemed that murdering Antigone was no longer a punishment of what she had done. Instead it was a penalty to Haimon for trying to help Creon make a more rational decision. As mentioned previously, assassinating people to show how powerful or ‘rightful’ a person is, shows a lack of humanism. Furthermore, Antigone mentioned a strong point yelling, “Ah the good fortune of kings, licensed to say and do whatever they please!” to which Creon replies, “You are alone here in that opinion.” Antigone later in that altercation explains “No, they are with me. But they keep their tongues in leash” (16). This proves that many did not have the courage to speak up as she did, this coercion caused Creon to do whatever he pleased, as a result creating a fascist
