n the middle of the second semester that is when it hit. The laziness and an excessive wearing of track shorts and sweatpants, and the over-sized T-shirts. Mrs. Rado demanded that I see her after class to have a “talk” and we all know what that means. When teachers want to tell you have a bad work ethic and need to start doing better or you will be guaranteed a failing grade. In order to teach me a lesson Mrs. Rado sent me four mentors with the hope that I would change my ways. Krogstad, Beowulf, Hamlet, and Elizabeth Proctor lawyer strolled into the classroom where I met them before the lessons began. Krogstad was an intelligent, tall man who dressed in a business suit. Beowulf had shoulder length, golden hair, and wore his gladiator armor.
The work environment has helped me learn responsibility such as paying bills, having money for my own interests or wants, and showing me adulthood. It has showed me support through other fellow employees to strive to understand and be a better employee for the business. They also give me insight on what I do they enjoy, like, or dislike about my work ethic. Although, work can be important and show you adulthood, it also can be stressful. The stress of wanting to do the best you can for the business and handling all the other responsibilities I have.
Beowulf, the defender of Hrothgar and Heorot, exhibits far more complicated (and less sincere) shades of revenge than the Grendel’s mother. At the end of the day, Beowulf’s goal is to become the preeminent warrior in all the land. In his society, the only way to gain such widespread celebrity is through courageous and self-endangering acts. Beowulf masks these deeds with a façade of seeking revenge; he supposedly comes to Heorot to save the Danes from Grendel’s terror, but his true motives lie in becoming a hero. His reward is not the pride of doing a good deed; Beowulf is rewarded with lavish and expensive gifts.
Lastly, Beowulf’s conflicts were with his own legend. He chose to fight the dragon himself and leave the kingdom to the younger generation. Sometimes you have to do what’s best even when it means you have to give up something. I knew that taking two college courses at once would be very difficult and time consuming. I chose to do it anyway and even though it’s stressful, I try my best. These courses will probably lower my grade point average and my class rank, but it’ll be worth it. This was a hard decision, but I knew it would benefit me in the long run.
Courage displayed by people of today’s times which amounts to monumental change, like that of Martin Luther King Jr, shows heroism. M.L.K Jr. embodies the characteristics of a hero through his bravery which resulted in the betterment of society. His revolutionary behavior to strive for advancements in the culture of many, and his risk in doing so, labels him a hero. Alike to Martin Luther King Jr. with his willingness to be criminally charged, Beowulf has the audacity to fight the evil that is Grendel. With his bare hands, Beowulf would “settle the outcome in a single combat” (line 426) that would rid the town of evil. The similar bravery between Martin Luther King Jr. and Beowulf depicts how people of today can be heroes. The bravery that exists in the most revolutionary people which leads to good change displays qualities of a person that can label them a hero.
The tale of Beowulf has been taught and studied for hundreds of years. As such, it only makes sense logically that scholars should discern certain lessons from the text, relevant to the original tellers’ lives and to our own. Throughout the poem, we see examples of leaders in Hrothgar and Beowulf, both epitomizing great leadership and displaying characteristics that people could learn from today. Beowulf shows us that a great leader inspires courage in his followers, remains true to his word, can swallow his pride, and rewards loyalty and acts of valor.

title character, Beowulf, as a living example of how a hero is meant to act. During the time when
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to score the winning touchdown, the walkoff home run, the game winning goal, or even the basket that won you the game? I haven’t done all of these, but I have had the privilege to do a couple of them. The things that have helped me with my athletic ability has been the teammates and coaches, the work ethic that I have and my family. Having the athletic ability that I have today, is shaping who I will be in the future.
Hamlet is a play that despite age, can deliver themes that consistently transcend generational differences, even when those differences span hundreds of years. It is the strength of these themes in Hamlet that has given the play such overwhelming cultural gravitas that allows it to remain relevant to this day. As such, it is a highly appropriate play for high school students to study. The core messages of generational conflict, unfolding to one’s true self, and morality are struggles faced by both Hamlet, and high school students. Consequently, this can motivate students in their studies when they discover a character, that despite the difference in time, is so easily relatable. When students recognize similarities between Hamlet and themselves, such as a distaste for the “tedious old fools” (2.2.219) with their “plentiful lack of wit” (2.2.199), it creates a connection between the students and this seemingly ancient piece of literature. A connection, that hopefully after the high school level, can be nurtured into a passion for literature. A connection that allows for greater insight and analysis at this current level. A connection, that if students are discouraged from making now, they are unlikely to make later in their lives, as once they grow older “the heyday in the blood is tame.” (3.4.69) and they will no longer be able to connect with the younger characters such as Hamlet, or the “young Fortinbras, / Of unimproved mettle hot and full” (1.1.95-96).
was raised by my parents to never lose sight of my goals and to always have a positive work ethic. My parents were born in India and they moved to Canada in hopes that their children could have a better life. They work hard everyday so that my siblings and I do not have to quit school like they did. My greatest eye opening experience was when I started working with my mother as a general factory worker in grade ten. The working conditions were very tough in which we stood for long hours and we had to be constantly working quickly. I met many great women and men who were new immigrants and heard their struggles in their birth country. However, despite all of the pressure they were thankful for their job and to be living in Canada. At the young
Imagine a superhero, believed to be the bravest and greatest role model. Everyone looks up to that superhero and wants to be like him. Some would say that the superhero is the model person for how society should act. But then, one day people found out the superhero was a fraud; he was not actually a good role model and was all for show. In the poem, Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf is a character who is the same fraud as the metaphorical superhero. It is seen through his brash decisions that he values glory and personal achievement, and lets his ego dictate the decisions he makes, and how he lives his life. While Beowulf seems like the model Anglo Saxon, he is in fact driven by his ego and pursuit of glory. Because of this he breaks comitatus and is the opposite of the ultimate Anglo Saxon.
This is a case study on A New Work Ethic written by James Sheehy a human resources manager. According to the Business Dictionary (2011) ethic is define as the basic concepts and fundamental principles of right human conduct. It includes study of universal values such as the essential equality of all men and women, human or natural rights, obedience to the law of land, concern for health and safety and, increasingly, also for the natural environment.
I was in the best of settings when I realized that Shakespeare was indeed great. My freshman year in high school, I had English class with an esteemed teacher, Mr. Broza—hailed as the Paul D. Schreiber High School Shakespeare aficionado, founder of Schreiber’s Annual Shakespeare Day, and, perhaps most heart-warming of all, a self-proclaimed Shakespeare lover whose posters of The Bard could be found as wallpaper in his small office. How lucky I thought I was. Indeed, if I wanted to appreciate Hamlet, I was in the right hands.
The epic tale of Beowulf was written sometime after his death. In other words, a long time ago during the Anglo-Saxon period. Today, directors in Hollywood did not keep from creating their own rendition of this epic poem As a result, plenty of modern interpretations of Beowulf, such as Sturla Gunnarsson’s Beowulf and Grendel, have been released. Naturally, the cultural values that might be reflected in modern Beowulf renditions will demonstrate a clash with those of the original fifth century Beowulf literature. One reason for this is that in the modern age we value characters with profound characteristics, characters that change due to the challenges they experience; characters that we as the audience can attach to. Flat characters like those of the original Beowulf text are difficult to empathize with since they are not realistic enough for our standards. Due to these differences in culture and values, the Beowulf and Grendel from the original Beowulf text possess definite contrasts when compared with their Beowulf and Grendel counterparts.
According to Osibanjo and Akinbode and Falola and Oludayo (2015), strong work ethics fosters excellent outcomes in work performance. This paper evaluates how strong work ethics (SWE) or weak work ethics (WWE) contributes to encouraging or discouraging an employee’s job performance. Based on existing research, a conceptual model is developed suggesting that work ethics is influenced by variables such as integrity, quality, self-discipline, sense of responsibility and teamwork to determine ethics which has a bearing on the employee. Integrity is critical and has a direct impact on employee job performance and so is self-disciplined because then the employee is focused on individual or team goals and possess a high-level of commitment to the organization’s goals. On the other hand, unethical behavior cannot be ignored, instead it should be discouraged and this is possible by the ways of leadership. Their daily conduct must portray a high ethical conduct. Ethical policies, procedures and practices must be implemented. The more openness there is in the workplace, the quicker unethical conduct can be dealt with. In conclusion, the need for strong work ethics in an organization is to keep the employees’ performance genuine, help them adapt to fluctuating conditions, prevent errors, cope with any complexity and minimize costs.
