Bay Of Pigs Was A Failure

JFK wanted to overthrow Fidel Castro, so he sent Cuban exiles to invade their homeland.

Imagine that you are John F. Kennedy in 1962, and you find out that your ally, Cuba, has your enemy, Soviet Union, has ICBMS (intermediate- range ballistic missiles) & Ilyushin Il-28 light bombers, that could reach the United States and aimed toward the United States. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a thirteen-day confrontation between the United States, Cuba, and the Soviet Union. Cuba had the missiles there for like three months before one of the U.S had a spy plane that figured out that Cuba had the Soviets Missiles. For a while, the U.S had Intel that Cuba had the missiles but JFK did not believe that Cuba was betraying them. These missiles were only ninety miles away from Florida the U.S. issued a military blockade to prevent further missiles from reaching Cuba. When all the offensive missiles and light bombers were taken from Cuba the blockade was initially ended on November 21, 1962. Although the Cuban Missile Crisis ruined relations with the United States of America and Cuba, it impacted the blockade between the United States of America and Cuba, the respect for the United States of America, and the Bay of the Pigs.

Bay of Pigs started in 1961 after operation mongoose. Operation mongoose was a mission to assiante fedal Castro and to contain communism the Americans feared it was going to make United States fall. A crisis occurred in April of 1961 when Kennedy approved the plan to send 1,400 CIA-trained Cuban exiles in a landing at the Bay of Pigs in Cuba. He intended to cause a rebellion that would overthrow the communist leader Fidel Castro. The mission would conclude with failure, with nearly all of the soldiers killed.

The primary initiative involved a 1961 CIA backed attempted large scale operation titled the Bay of Pigs invasion, that involved an the landing of 1,400 Cuban Guerilla exiles which subsequently failed. The CIA then oped for a more covert, assassination route and contacted their sources within the Mafia. The plan was to have Fidel Castro ingest a poison capsule through the help of old Mafia contacts in Cuba who opposed Fidel. Their man for the job was the prominent Chicago and Vegas Mob Boss Handsome Johnny Roselli; however, after failed attempts in both late 1961 and 1962 the program was shut down and the Mafia assets were put on notice. The Bay of Pigs took place in April of 1961, and was a failed attempt to overthrow communist dictator Fidel Castro. The American troops split into five groups by boat on April 13, 1961 and had landed by the 16th. At the beginning the Cubans were overwhelmed, but then Castro took over the mission. The US only sent half of the air support that was planned and necessary for the US to claim victory. Because of the lack of air support the American soldiers were captured in three days and sent to Cuban prisons. This was one of the worst losses for the United States military but great for Castro. The failed invasion of the Bay of Pigs in April 1962 ultimately led to the crisis. After Castro obtained power of the Caribbean island in 1959 Kennedy’s advisors told the president that Castro was no real threat. However Kennedy wanted to show that he was intent on winning the cold war and he adopted the plan for the invasion from former president Eisenhower. The invasion was to ship 1400 Cuban exiles to the Bay of Pigs on the south side of the island however world war two era aircraft painted with Cuban markings failed to destroy Castro’s air power.

In 1960 the soviet premier attempted to convince Castro to become communist, soon after this castro became communist, probably influenced by the soviet premier (“Cuban missile Crisis”3). A new american president, that could probably change the war, was coming into office around this time, President Kennedy. Since Castro had found out about the invasion, he was ready and defeated the the incoming force easily(“Cuban missile Crisis”3-4). The failed invasion seemed to help the Cuban opinion of Castro. He was now an obvious threat and so the U.S. decided to start operation Mongoose. Operation Mongoose was a secret operation to get rid of Castro, it was an operation where the U.S. would try to sabotage Cuba, but Operation Mongoose never ended up happening. Now Castro needed the strong arm of the Soviets even more. With the Cold War arms race in effect, Castro knew that the Soviets could protect him from future invasions from the United States.
