Medicine is a unique field and it demands a unique person. Money should not be a driving factor in your decision, for the sake of your patients and yourself, because it will not sustain you. A famous Chinese proverb says that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Well the same is true with the road to becoming a physician. While in high school it is important to get a good general education. This is good by itself, but also prepares you for doing well on the S.A.T. The hardest decision for medical students is narrowing their studies to a specific field. With so many different options, I researched several different fields that appealed most to me. With each field comes entirely new and unique training, but each practice is just as demanding as the next. After the long road of medical school and the selection of a practice is complete, each student must complete a residency. A resident student is a student with a medical degree, who is practicing their specific field under a licensed doctor. Generally, residencies last from 3 to 5 years and usually the final stage before one can practice on their own. Each step along the road to becoming a doctor is more and more competitive and demanding as the last.
In college, a student must study courses to prepare for medicine, such as biology, chemistry, and some advanced mathematics (“Becoming A Doctor” 1). The first four years, the student would take pre-medical courses while earning their Bachelor’s degree and taking courses that are required for their degree plan. Then the college graduate will advance into medical school, where for four years the student learns about the area of medicine they choose (“Becoming A Doctor” 1). It generally takes seven to eight years to finish a medical doctor’s education (“Becoming A Doctor” 1). After medical school, the graduate will apply for an internship that would last about one year. Then after the internship, they become a resident and practice medicine under the supervision of a senior doctor (“Becoming A Doctor” 1). Altogether, it is about 11 years before one actually becomes an independent doctor (“Becoming A Doctor”
Now that I am sure what a pediatrician is, I want to know what it takes to become one. At this point in my search, I already know the process is a bumpy journey. After graduating high school, I will finish my generals in college, which will take about two years because I am already taking my AA degree in high school. What happens next is when the real challenges will appear. The University of Washington says, “Before becoming a doctor, future medical students will take a pre-med course,” (UW Medicine). A pre-medical program is about a four year long program that students take to learn the basics about biology, physics, chemistry,

Students can prepare by studying English, science, social science, history and mathematics such as Algebra 2 and Calculus. Besides studying from the above, it is also recommended that students take a foreign language and three courses in

Almost all physicians complete at least 4 years in an undergraduate school, then 4 years of medical school, and 3-8 years in an internship and residency programs. The only thing that gives me doubts about going into a career in medicine is the amount of time you’re in school, because then once you get out school I’ll will have to go into either an internship or a residency program for a good amount of years before I will be able just to go out and find the job I’m looking
Thinking back to what made me consider the medical field, I don’t remember considering any other field. Before I could even understand what physicians actually did, I knew that they had a major impact on a person’s life. It is obvious that doctors save life everyday, but the way they save lives was always interesting to me.Beyond all the medicine and surgery, a physician takes the time to guide and support every patient. Being a physician is not purely ingrained in science, nor is it purely ingrained in humanism. It was the unique combination of both that drew me to consider being a physician.

At that moment, I was asked about what I wanted to be when I grow up and my answer was that I aspire to be a doctor to save my father who had been diagnosed with AIDS and I didn’t wanted him to go far away from me.
