Behind the Veil By examining Reverend Hooper in “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, one can see how the veil isolates him from the congregation, hiding from their depravity and therein the ‘parable of evil’ created by the veil, in addition to a desire still present in society, omniscience. While the congregation is cognizant of the preposterousness of hiding their depravity from themselves and an omniscient Creator, nevertheless they aspire such. One can clearly see the congregation is ashamed of their transgression. When Reverend Hooper delivers a sermon on hidden sin, they begin to feel anxiety and woe. This is evident in the following: “An unsought pathos came hand in hand with awe.” (Hawthorne 23). The congregation senses as though Reverend Hooper has “crept upon them” (Hawthorne 23). They are deeply ashamed of such. One might consider the veil as a revelation to the people. The guilt resulting from the aforementioned revelation gives the veil a persona of evil. As the veil represented a persona of evil, justifiably, the laity attempted to avoid its presence, in vain of course. In one particular example, the marriage, the couple to be married awaited the Minister’s arrival, hopefully without the veil. This added a melancholy mood to a typically joyful event. “[...][the] horrible black veil [...] that a cloud seemed to have rolled duskily from beneath the black crape.” (Hawthorne 26). This metaphor is used to represent how something as minute as a veil created a ‘cloud of melancholy.’ The veil also serves another purpose of ‘tearing’ the ungodly away from their depravity. The veil constantly distresses them, reminding them until it destroys them mentally. The veil is: “[...] an unrelenting example of depravity [...]” (Bunge 19).
