I became a mother at a very young age, seventeen years old. When I was in labor at the hospital, I experienced the nursing care of two very distinct nurses. I quickly became aware of the demeanor of the night nurse. She was unkind, pushy, and insensitive. She also did not explain things and did not smile much. On the other hand, the day nurse was merrier, compassionate, caring, informative, and reassuring. Despite my juvenile state, my comprehension was very astute. I comprehended that there are two types of nurses. One who solely works to attain a paycheck and the nurse who chose the nursing profession because they value humanity. Simultaneously, I was becoming a mother and discovering what my profession would be thanks to the caring day nurse who was a role model.

The role is clearly not as understood by other healthcare professionals as needed which results in the disagreement if the role of a family nurse practitioner is even required for primary care. As people are getting older, the need for medical professionals that can provide patient care to our ever growing population increases. A person in this career should have an energy level that is somewhat high, has a skill that is interpersonal, and a knowledge that is a little scientific (“Career” para. 6). Transitioning from nursing school to working in a hospital setting can be a challenging time for a new graduate. Due to the nursing shortage, new graduate nurses are being hired with little to no experience. This is overwhelming for new nurses, especially when they are not getting adequate support or training from the hospital. The amount of stress, pressure, and lack of training is leading to a high turnover rate for new graduate nurses. With patient acuity on the rise, new graduate nurses that are filling these vacancies in the hospitals, need to be competent nurses to provide proper and safe care to the patients.

As of 2008, there were about 753,600 Licensed Practical Nurses and 2,618,700 Registered Nurses in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2010-11). In the year 2018, the LPN employment percentage is expected to rise 21% while the RN rate should be approximately 22% (U.S. Department of Labor, 2010-11). This may not seem that high, but it is, when one considers that the expected employment rate for a Dentist is only expected to be 16% (U.S Department of Labor, 2010-11). Certified Nurse Assistants are nurse assistant who have taken the required training and have passed a competency exam. They provide patient care and perform various cares giving task. Common CNA job duties and CAN responsibilities are to answer patients call signals, serve meals, observe patients conditions. Prepare patients for surgery, treatment, and examination. Measuring patients’ vital signs, such as blood pressure and temperature is also a part of the CNA job.

The emergency lights light up the hallway as the ambulance pulls in, everybody's hearts are racing but composure is held, that bay door opens and the EMT’s rush in doing chest compressions while steering the stretcher with precision the patient is safely transferred to another bed, the CPR continues and another team takes over all with the intent to save this life. This is the typical thoughts one may have about an emergency situation, but what they don’t realize is all the teamwork involved in medicine in general. As a native Mainer, I have adopted the mentality that all things worthwhile require hard work. Growing up on the rocky, briny coast taught that lobster shells must be cracked, fiddleheads must be plucked from their bristly nest in the cold spring earth, and blueberries are easier picked when you are young and closer to the ground. Maine is a difficult state, but not without rewards. Becoming a Nurse Practitioner through USM's options program will also prove challenging and intense, with the lifelong reward of a career that has meaning and value to me.

People around the world would not be cared for, educated, and have emotional support during their injuries and their family member's injuries, if it was not for Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses need to genuinely have people skills in order to care for patients and their families. Registered Nurses need to educate people on health care and how to take care of themselves during injuries. The amount of RN's has been growing at a percentage of 19%, which is faster than average ("Registered Nurses: Occupational Outlook Handbook"). This is excellent because there are more Registered Nurses, therefore, there are more patients being cared for. Being a Registered Nurse requires an associates degree, specific qualities such as people skills and sympathy, and knowledge about medical care to be able to do the duties.
