The medical field is expanding ever so rapidly in today’s society. In the field of Physical Therapy one needs to have the understanding of how the human body works and the injuries one body could sustain. I have chosen a career to help others to battle back from life-changing injuries or surgeries. I will take the first step of joining the medical field by obtaining a physical therapist associates degree. I will become a Physical Therapist Assistant.

When you are first looking into a career, it is a smart idea to learn the benefits it will have to your life, and how well you will fit into the environment it places you in. Not everyone will be able to be a doctor, or work on the space shuttles at NASA, but everyone has something that would actually suit them best. After doing the research into the field, and having it done on me, I have decided the career of Physical Therapy is one I can tackle with passion and empathy. Exploring career choices can be one of the most tasking process that one will come upon. Starting off, I always wanted to be a hairstylist. Years went on, then it changed to nurse, then psychiatrist, and finally settled on what I am now most passionate about, physical therapy. Physical therapy really appeals to me because I love life and I want everyone to be able to live life to the fullest. I want to be there for people who need help getting back on their feet, literally. The working environment for a physical therapist can vary to several places. I am currently a physical therapist assistant (PTA), as a PTA I provide physical therapy services under the direction and supervision of a licensed physical therapist. I mainly treat the geriatric population. I see strokes, cardiac, orthopedic and many other medical problems, or other health-related conditions that limit our patient’s ability to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives. I work in a skilled rehab center providing patient education, exercise for mobility, strength and coordination training for activities such as walking, massage, and the use of physical agents and electrotherapy such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation to help patient regain their functional mobility.

Throughout my life, I have had many experiences that have led me to pursue a career in the health sciences. My interest in the science of movement and passion for patient care has led me to physical therapy. Most recently, my employment as a rehab tech has furthered my belief that physical therapy is my dream profession. Working as a tech in both inpatient rehab and acute care has given me an unbelievable amount of experience, not just in physical therapy, but in all the intricacies that come with an inpatient setting. Prior to my experience in this position, I never thought I would enjoy working as a physical therapist in an inpatient setting.

These professionals work in both non profit and for profit organizations. They prevent the onset, symptoms, and progression of impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities that may result from diseases, disorders, conditions, or injuries. Examples of conditions treated by physical therapists are arthritis, back pain, balance, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Physical therapists specialize to develop a greater depth of knowledge and skills related to a particular area of practice. Physical therapists may practice as generalists or specialized in areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics, orthopedics, or neurology. Specialty certification is voluntary, and physical therapists are not required to be certified in order to practice in a specific area.

Physical Therapy is a job on the rise. Not only is it a great field to help people it also makes for a great career. The demand for physical therapist has grown so much so that “the demand for physical therapists is expected to grow by 30% between 2008 and 2018” (Black Enterprise 2014). Because of this statistic and other like it, the journey to becoming a physical therapist is tough one. One must obtain graduate school and also must meet the pre-requisites for that school to become a physical therapist, and also must receive a license. There are now different types of physical therapists because of the growing interest in this field.

Work Environment Physical therapists usually work full time during normal business hours, although some work part time or during weekends and evenings. They can work in offices of physical therapy that also house offices of occupational and speech therapists as well as audiologists. They can also work in hospitals, home healthcare services, nursing and residential care facilities, and offices of physicians.

You work closely to patients. You build a strong relationship with many of the clients. You bond from seeing them every week, or every other week, depending on their treatment schedule. You need to be able to work just as well with a group as you do independently. You need to be able to communicate with others and be able to reason and problem solve. All of these aspects are important of you want to become a physical therapist. If you don’t have the ability to manage yourself, others, time, and many other things, this is not the career for you. You have to help motivate others to keep going so they can reach their goals. You have to be willing to teach others how to do something they may have never done before. Although being a Physical Therapist requires much practice, equipment, and many college courses the ability to be able to help someone in need and make a difference is the greatest feeling anyone could ever experience.
