Being Your Own Priority
What is the most important thing in your life? Some people may say it is family, friends, school, sports, etc. but I believe the most important thing in your life should be yourself. Some people may see this as selfish, but this is the best way to improve every aspect of your life and make you a better person. You don’t owe anyone anything, but you owe it to yourself to try and become a better person everyday, and you can’t do that when you are too focused on things that don’t really matter. I believe making yourself your number one priority is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. I haven’t always thought this way, but this summer something completely unexpected happened to me, and made

I was devastated, my summer of basketball was now going to be a summer of resting and rehab. It was just a slight tear, so it would be a 6-8 week recovery time. They day I went in for surgery I was so nervous. Thoughts running through my mind “what if it ends up being worse than originally expected”, “what if I never recover from it”, “what if I can never play basketball again”. I tried not to think about it as much as I could help it. When they pushed me back into the operating room my heart was racing. They put me under and that’s all I remember, but when I came out my perspective was changed. I knew that if I wanted to get healthy as quickly I needed to start focusing on myself, and making myself the best I can be. I need to stop worrying so much about what other people are doing, and focus more on what I am doing to better myself.
Once I started physical therapy, I pushed myself to my limits everyday I could. Then once I was cleared by a doctor, I started working out everyday: basketball, conditioning, speed, and quickness. Some of this meant I was going to have to wake up at 5:30 A.M., but I was 100% committed to bettering myself. Once I started doing this for basketball, I realized I needed to do this in every aspect of life. By focusing on yourself, you will realize what you want and who you want in your life. So this doesn’t mean family isn’t important, but it does mean there are certain toxic people in
Please sit down and relax for a moment, and ask yourself the question of all questions: What is most important to you in life? This is a question asked by many psychologists, surveyors and even employers. A common answer is “I just want to be happy and successful and follow my dreams.” But think about it– who really makes you happy? Who helps you become successful? Who inspires you to follow your dreams? To this people generally answer: Family. Now imagine what it would be like to have your family taken from you in the spur of a moment.
The tree Melinda is assigned in art class symbolizes her and how she changes dramatically, for better or worse, throughout the book. In the near beginning Melinda draws trees that have been struck by lighting, the trees are dark, broken down and weary to symbolize how Melinda is feeling at this point. A great example of this is when Melinda says “For a solid week, ever since the pep rally, I’ve been painting watercolors of trees that have been hit by lightning. I try to paint them so they are nearly dead, but not totally. Mr. Freeman doesn’t say a word to me about them. He just raises his eyebrow. One picture is so dark you can barely see the tree at all” (Anderson 30). This symbolizes how she is going through a period in her life where she
The relationships that are created with others define who we are as individuals, but the relationships we form with our family are unparalleled to that of any other. Family members are the people we count on in times of need and help make decisions that are in our best interest.
Boasting conspicuous consumption to the less fortunate is like rubbing salt on a wound. In contrast, salt creates an anti-bacterial environment that allows the wound to heal even faster, like materialism motivates technological advances for long-term growth. However, sacrifices must be made to fuel the idea of commodification for it promotes selfishness, lust, and jealousy. The idea of obtaining rewards intended for selfish needs and wants forces humans to compete for female sexual objectification. This process has consequences, for the power of jealousy exchanges morality with ignorance. Although Lawson’s The Other Side of the Bridge and Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby came to different conclusions about future ideals, they both share the idea
Post-surgery was the most difficult part of this journey because it put me in a depressed state. The inability of playing sports and watching my teammates play
Some people say that life is all about family. If something goes wrong in your life, it doesn't matter as long as you have your family by your side. Family is what life is all about, right? However, when some people reach a certain age, they forget about family. Family goes from being a top priority, to being last on a list. These people alter their priorities and they become their own top priority. They focus on their education, their careers, and creating an independent life for themselves. Eventually, they find an apartment, move away, and life is all about them. Sadly, they grow up and move on without their family. Leah Remini, known for her role as Carrie in The King of Queens, proves that at no matter what age, family should always be
Now, I was the one who was able to develop treatment plans for patients. I loved being able to help my athletes reach their goals and return to play. Although there were aspects of Athletic Training that I enjoyed, I found that there were other parts of the profession that I did not like, especially acting as a first responder at athletic events. At my clinical rotations, I often found myself thinking about working as a physical therapist. My injury opened my eyes to a profession I had never considered before.
Family is supposed to listen to you when you're in need. Family is supposed to have your back. Family is supposed to be loyal. Family is supposed to be dependable. Family is supposed to accept you at your worst and best moments. Family is supposed to make you laugh and smile. Family is the number one unconditional love that everyone has. Whether it be the unconditional love from immediate family members or close friends, everyone has that one person they go to in times of need. It’s funny how those closest to you can hurt you the most.
They had to run so much tests and questions before surgery it was so annoying. Later I find myself laying in bed getting everything connected on me so I could go to the surgery room. They said it would take about thirty minutes to finish the process of the surgery. When they came to get me I literally started to scream “wheeeeee” in the hallway while they pulled me away from my room. As I entered the surgery room it became so cold that my breath could be visible. Later a guy started to explain to me on what their going to do and how they're going to put me on the
Even though it is human nature to choose family members above friends, and to feel as though family ties are more substantial, having a “family first mentality” what a person decides affects every person around us, moral and ethical codes instilled in us through family should only be considered a starting point for our own choices, although in general, people have honorable intentions, there are times when their choices are made from poor examples set before them. Loving your family doesn’t require agreement with them, or following their unhealthy example. The life of Daryl Dixon, of The Walking Dead, is one I would like to explore.
It was a feeling that I have never had before. To be honest with you I was scared, it was going to be my first surgery and I did not like the whole fact of me being put to sleep so the doctor could cut me open and then stitch me all back up again. My stomach was tied in knots. I really did not have much of a choice though, it had to be done. Prior to my surgery I had to meet with my doctor so we could go over everything one last time before my surgery to make sure me and my family were all on the same page. The doctor told my dad, “We will only be able to tell if your son needs reconstruction of the ACl once we are inside of his knee, and the chances of that happening are slim to none.” Then the Anesthesiologist walked into my room, and we were having a good conversation. She was probably in her early 50’s, she was telling me about her son who plays baseball and what position he plays. I was actually quite enjoying the nice conversation before my surgery, and then out of nowhere I felt a needle being driven into my arm. I thought a bee had stung me, but I looked over at her and there she was with a big smile on her face while she was shooting me up with drugs to put me to sleep. I thought I was going to be one of the few who could withstand the drugs that make you go to sleep, but before I knew it my eyes were closing and there was nothing that I could do about it. During my surgery the
At 54 years of age and having 14 surgeries in my adult life under my belt you would think I would have been calm. All my other surgeries I had faced with healthy trepidation and concern but not fear. However the past year and a half I had been in so much pain that I was very scared that I would come out of surgery in more pain then when I went in.

The surgery. The day of the surgery I had many panic, and anxiety attacks on the way there. I will never forget the feeling I had in the waiting room. When I was getting ready for the surgery I got so sick. I was so nervous. They had to give me something to calm me down. The used to calm me down started wearing off as I was being taken to the operating room...my luck. The surgery was supposed to take 20-30 mins. For me, the surgery took 5-6 hours.
Family plays a crucial role in an individual's life. They affect your decisions and the way you live. Your family can either bring you down or lift you up and push you to do your hardest.
