Along the Balcones Escarpment and in east central Texas, lies Bell county. This county was named after Peter Hansborough Bell, who was born in Virginia in 1812 and passed away in
1898. He served as a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto and contributed in the Somervell expedition. He became the governor of Texas in 1849 and was an officer in the Mexican War.
Newcomers began setting on the Lampasas River in 1847 and the area of Bell county was organized to be an official county on August 1, 1850. The first county seat given was Nolanville but Belton became the authenticated county seat on December 16, 1851. Its population was nearly 4,800 by the year 1860 and rose to 340,411 in 2016. Over the years, this area became humid with 36 inches of rain per year. Temperatures in the summer are about 94 degrees while lowers down to 37 degrees in the winter. Today, the county is known for manufacturing computers, plastic goods, clothing, and furniture. It is currently impacting Texas for its beef production and is based upon agriculture and includes tourism for people who are new to the region.
The Bell county courthouse was 1st built in 1851 by Thomas T. Havens, making the building one story and placed a price of $199 for purchase. It had requirements created by the commissioners in 1858 which was accomplished in 1884. Later in the year, the courthouse underwent a refurbishment to replace the bell tower that had been absent since the construction. Architect, Jasper N. Preston, created the tower using the renaissance revival design seen in many historical antique places. Today, Jon Burrows is the official county judge who was elected in 1999. The courthouse that was attended was the Small Claims Court, in the Durham Region Courthouse at 150 Bond Street East. This court was attended on October 19, 2016, in courtroom 509. The case that was heard was Adam Rantis (Unrepresented) v. Naresh Kumar Ganeshan (represented by Rajan Mahavalirajan). This was a case involving faulty workmanship, The Plaintiff is suing because he hired an installer to put floor down on the main level of his home. Upon completion of the installation it was found that there were many errors with the floor. The homeowner did not notice any of this until after he had paid the installer. The demographics of McLennan County can be found in Table 1. This information shows the change in the demographics from 2010 to 2014. As can be seen by the chart, there is not a huge amount of growth, but growth nonetheless. Growth and change is expected in this county in the coming years due to new developments in the downtown area including a new stadium, which provide opportunities to live and work closer in to downtown and property values are also on the rise. The county values when compared with the state values are very similar.
Juan De Onate was born in Zacatecas, Mexico in 1550. He was the first Spanish governor of New Mexico and strived to find North America’s wealth but failed to succeed. The home of the Briscoe family was also used for church and social gatherings. The home was claimed a historical site in 1977. The first Baptist Church of Devine is also a historical site. The first church organized in Devine was founded in 1882 by the Rev. D. Johnson, the Rev. C.B. Hukill, and 35 others. Hernan Cortes was a Spanish conquistador, famous for his conquest of the Aztec Empire in Mexico in 1519, and his discovery of the New World. As the first governor of New Spain, Cortes himself rebuilt a city and extended his expeditions up to California. Hernan Cortes was born sickly and palely around 1485 in Medellin, Spain from a noble family. At the age of 14, his mom sent him to study Latin and law in Salamanca University. In Salamanca, Cortes became a good writer, and later on during his expedition, Cortes was also well-known for his letters to Emperor Charles V. After two years of school, Cortes returned home in order to aggravate his parents, who desired him to become a lawyer. However, two years at law school gave him a way to become a legit conqueror of Mexico. In 1504, Cortes left Spain for the island of Santo Domingo, Hispaniola and joined Diego Velazquez’s expedition of Cuba in 1511. There, Cortes served for Velazquez as a soldier, and gradually impressed his master with his political viewpoint.

The terrain ranges from high rolling prairie to flat prairie, with steep to moderate hills. Mineral springs and spring-fed creeks abound. A wide variety of trees thrive in the Lampasas area including live oak, juniper, mesquite, elm and pecan. The first settlers arrived in the late 1840s and early 1850s. John Patterson, honored with a Texas historical marker, arrived in Lampasas in 1854, and became the first settler to cultivate land in the county. The region attracted Anglo settlers because of its plentiful building materials, water and game including fish, wild turkey, deer and buffalo. The settlers soon found that the area was perfect for raising livestock. Of course for these same reasons the Lampasas area had long been attractive to the Indians as well, especially the Comanches and Tonkawas.
