Benefits of Community Service Community service contributes to a community in the same way that quarterbacks, wide receivers, and offensive linemen contribute to a football team. Without people helping out, there wouldn’t be a way to score a touchdown or win a game. It is the same way in helping out a community. The more people there are helping out, more homes would be built, more mouths would be fed, and more people would have a happy life. Some people take for granted the clothes they have on their backs and the table they get to eat dinner at with their family. There are plenty of people in communities that do not have a home to come to every night. There are plenty of people that do not have the clothes, food, or money they need to survive. People are not the only thing that needs help in the community. Animal shelters are also one of many that could always use an extra hand. Recycling and picking up trash is another way to help out. One of the best ways to contribute to the community is volunteering and contributing time to helping others. Studies show that community service contributes to the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of people at any age. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) says in the year 2013, 138 million American adults volunteered. To break it down, the CNCS found the following information: adults between the ages of 35-44 had the highest volunteer rate, adults between the ages 45-54 had the second highest, and one in
On any given day, millions of Americans give their time and talents to benefit their communities through volunteer service. Volunteering is so widespread in the United States of America that it can be observed daily in almost every aspect of life. Around one-fifth of the American population, more than sixty two million people, serve as volunteers each year according to the United States of America government statistics. Volunteers contribute more than eight billion hours of service to local and national groups, valued conservatively at $173 billion. Americans volunteer because they recognize a need and are willing to take responsibility for meeting that need. They often underestimate the impact of their work (Ellis, 2011, para. 2).
Community service is an act of selflessness that grows a caring community. Community only consists on what it’s members are willing to contribute to it. Personally, it is my pristine pride to assist the community in it’s development it into a bountiful place for all.
Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world” (Goodreads). Gandhi was saying that if we want something to change, we have to do it ourselves and show others that we need this change to happen. In Paul Loeb’s, “Soul of a Citizen” he encourages community service because of the important role it plays in community change. “Participation in public life often requires us to confront blindness, shortsightedness, greed, and the will to dominion that theologians call evil. Taking on larger causes sets us up for repeated heartbreak and for anger and frustration when people we hope will respond spurn the most basic appeals to human solidarity” (Loeb 40). When we engaged in community service, we get to see issues that others
What does community service means to me? Well, to me community service mean helping your community become a better place. When you do things for your neighborhood, it makes you feel like a better person. There are all sorts of activities you can do in your community. You can work with children at school, work with the elderly, or help people that are less fortunate and make their day very special. Community Service is very important because it gives you a chance to bond with the people in your neighborhood. It will also give you a chance to give back to your community , you’ll learn a lot from your experience, and you’ll make a difference in someone’s life. I recommend a lot of people to go out and make a difference.
In a community, there is an expectancy that one will contribute to it in some way. Whether it's working or volunteering, both forms of service can better the community one lives in. In my opinion, it is essential for one to contribute to their community in whatever way they can in order to be a truly valued member.
I have seen the amount of pleasure that volunteering brings to those people who you are helping out. Community Service has personally affected my life in a positive way and make it possible to give others what they do not have. I learned that there is not a job or act of service which is too small, each action must be done for the positive impact of your community. I have donated more than 12 inches of my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths organization and Locks of Love. Moreover, I have devoted more than 65 hours to Interact Club and have participated in many events such as Bell ringing for the Salvation Army, helping out at the Fly-in Breakfast by washing kitchens supplies, serving maple syrup, eggs, and butter and cleaning out the tables.
I agree with Ansen that there are two-way benefits towards the person that needs help and the person that is volunteering. When I was volunteering to go to the nursing home and pamper the elderly ladies, not only did the elderly have fun but we volunteers had a bunch of fun. We all had smiles on our faces and wish that we could stay a bit longer. It benefited them because it gave them a wonderful day to remember but it did the same for us. It also helped me out in other ways because I was able to use that service as something to put on my resume for when I need to get a job. In the article Ansen mentions the GIVE Act (Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education) and how “it suggests that there is public support for an expansion of national service” (Ansen, 2013, p.137). This part ties in with the day the guest speaker brought up the service for cleaning up the bathrooms, grass, and streets. Not many people volunteered for this one and same goes for me because in my head I didn’t want to clean any bathrooms because I thought that it was gross. While I was sitting there watching a couple of people stand up, my youth pastor looked at me and suggested that I help clean up bathrooms as well and so I did. When I did I felt like a germophobe and hardly wanted to touch anything but when we were done with the bathroom the owner of the store shook our hands with a smile going ear to ear and said thank
I have been a part of different activities for my community service. I have helped the TLC preschool afterschool with cleaning tables and toys once all the children have gone home. I have also been to the shelly baird school where they disabled kids go for schooling and helped out there with the students doing their work and played games .I am currently in “Dude Be Nice Club” and recently we participated in project night night where we would gather donated security blankets a book or stuffed animal and deliver them to children who have very little in homeless shelters. My community service in this case helped me realize that there are people out there who need some encouragement to help them get back on their feet and realize in life that
It is proven that community service has numerous positive effects. Researchers have stated that community service raises self-esteem, creates bonds, teaches leadership skills and shows youth the power of action. Being part of something bigger than yourself brings great rewards.
What does community service mean? Community service, to me, means bettering the community with volunteering at local places, business, or helping the people themselves. Community services is very important due to most of the things in a community such as parks, food banks, etc. being ran/used by the community.
“Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like or have time for.” Community service is really easy to get into. I mean, it is not like you have to put out an application and have an interview in order to do it. It is really easy to get into, and is really fun. It is things you wouldn’t even think are considered, like:
To me, my community service has helped to make me realize that I need to give back to those in need. While doing community service I have found how fortunate I am to live the life that I have been blessed with. Giving back to those who need is helps to make me feel like a better person. Helping others can help anyone to better themselves and their own opinion of themself.
Discussing about volunteering to teenagers should be the first step for a better life, since teenagers are the future of tomorrow and they will leave a mark from yesterday. Volunteering has been such an important matter, that schools in many countries around the world established that 12th grade students will need certain hours of community service in order to graduate. But the frequent answers all the schools are getting are “Why do I need to volunteer? I have better things to do!” What people are forgetting is that each one of them is part of a community, a community that is not perfect and that the government sometimes forgets about their problems or needs, because obviously the government needs to take care of other things that require more attention. People are not only helping others, they are also helping themselves (Volunteering).
A young person should strive to support their local community for various reasons. Engaging in community service provides people with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large. Community service and volunteerism enables one to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service to those who need it most.
Community service can be defined as voluntary work intended to help people in a particular are. Community service is normally unpaid work, intended to be of social use, or as a way of not sending an individual to jail or prison, or not paying a ticket. Community service is done normally around a particular area in which you reside in. In a way this can be beneficial to the community, because it is a way for individuals to clean up their own neighborhoods, because who does not want their neighborhoods to look appealing.
