This dramatic painting by Benjamin West commemorates the 1752 experiment in Philadelphia in which Benjamin Franklin demonstrated that lightning is a form of electricity.
Though Franklin never conducted this experiment, in this allegorical painting, British-American painter Benjamin West, has portrayed Franklin as a figure of mythological stature, surrounded by helpful angelic cherubim as he summons one of the great forces of nature from the heavens. In the background the cherubim mind an electrical apparatus and what is presumably a spare kite.
Benjamin West give Franklin the heroic cast of a visionary Prometheus harnessing the ‘fire’ of electricity for the coming age of the yet undiscovered telegraph and the light bulb. By representing Franklin
Ben Franklin was a very curious and inventive thinker. He kept thinking about different ways to experiment with electricity so he came up with an experiment with only a few materials (wire, mobile kite, handkerchief, and two sticks).(”Benjamin Franklin and Electricity”) Franklin
Benjamin Franklin notably contributed to the period of religious revival known as the Great Awakening. Being a printer, he was well acquainted with the texts of different religious sects, because much of the material printed at the time were Bible texts. Franklin represents a quintessential ideal of how to achieve success through education. His pursuit of perfection was driven by the values instilled in him by his Puritan father as

Young Goodman Brown is a short narrative written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Just like many of his other works, the story is set in the 17th century Puritan New England, and the author primarily addresses the puritan beliefs at the time which state that humanity exists in a state of degradation and God holds some unconditional love to humans by giving them unmerited grace. “The author mainly focuses on underlying tensions within the puritan way of life” (Jaynes, 2006). He thus uses symbolism to showcase the story of Young Goodman Brown’s journey. The main character delves deep into self-scrutiny and ends up losing his beliefs and virtue.
While many artists work off of inspiration, John Trumbull was no exception finding his inspiration from Thomas Jefferson’s sketch of the first presentation of the Declaration of Independence . The overall painting combined with the foundational component of Jefferson’s sketch communicates a revered moment, within a room of dominance over Britain, in witness of only the most powerful and important people of America . An overall depicted mood can be derived as reverencing, as shown by the men’s prominent stances, high profile facial expressions, and the importance of the newly proposed document itself. The painting was commissioned between August of 1817 and September of 1818, hung months later on October 5, 1818 . The hanging of this painting
In The Autobiography, Benjamin Franklin recounts the many paramount experiences throughout his life that shaped him into great American figure he was known to be. On the opening page, Franklin reveals the book’s epistolary format by writing, “Dear Son,” going on to admit that he’s made some mistakes in the past and to recollect that past is a way to relive it. By divulging his desire to “change some sinister Accidents & Events” (Franklin 3) the author indicates how important it is for his son to observe as he amends his mistakes. Pride, virtue and vanity play a pivotal role in Benjamin Franklin’s life and the way he portrays himself to others. Instances occur where the author is shown gloating about his great accomplishments and he puts

Haley Claiborne Mrs. Speights ENG1123 15 February 2016 Goodman Brown In “Young Goodman Brown”, Nathaniel Hawthorne expresses his view of sin as an allegory in which Young Goodman Brown is representative of the average person. Beginning at nightfall, the young Mr. Brown sets out on a journey to the woods. From the start, he is going against the wishes of his symbolic wife, Faith, yet is fully determined to go into the forest.
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4, NASB). This is the verse Christians use when referring to dark times or when their faith as Christians is being challenged by non-believers and the forces of Satan himself. This is the mentality seen in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown”. Young Goodman Brown is an allegory about the Christian walking through the wilderness and facing temptation from the Devil, along with many other symbolic images that go along with the allegory.
The allegory displayed in “Young Goodman Brown” through different symbols reveals a moral, which is the corruption of life through the indulgence of sin. The name of the protagonist, which is Young Goodman Brown, can be seen as an underlying metaphor shown throughout the story. Brown begins the story as a young and naive man who is in good spirits, as described in the beginning of his name “Young Goodman”. But as the story ends the name “Brown” symbolizes how he becomes “a stern, a sad, a darkly meditative, a distrustful, if not a desperate, man” (Hawthorne 34). The name of Brown alludes to the dark and corrupted life that evil or sin had induces into his life.
The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is a detailed account of the illustrious experiences of Benjamin Franklin. Though the cultural differences in writing has changed since the 18th century one can learn a lot about one of America’s greatest forefathers through this book. It accounts for Franklin’s life when he was born January 17th, 1706 till the year 1757. Unfortunately, he died in 1790 and was never able to finish his autobiography. However, the book thoroughly details the early life of Benjamin Franklin.
The array of females in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald are unique in their own ways. No two people in the world are the same, but these three women: Jordan Baker, Daisy Buchanan, and Myrtle Wilson are definitely contrasting. Not only are they, in particulars, different from one another, but the way they act and the things they do are also very diverse. Daisy Buchanan is more of a laid back, kind of rich girl who has things handed to her because she has money. Whereas, Myrtle lives with her husband, George Wilson, in a run-down, small house on top of George’s auto-repair shop. Jordan Baker lives with her aunt in an apartment in Manhattan and cheats at golf
Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "Young Goodman Brown" is an excellent example of an allegory. Allegories use events, characters or symbolism as a bizarre or abstract representation of ideas in the story, and throughout "Young Goodman Brown", Hawthorne uses a heavy amount of symbolism, as well as his characters and the events of the story line to develop a religious allegory. A large symbolic role is played by protagonist Goodman Brown's wife, Faith. Also, the main event in the short story, Brown's journey into the forest, holds several major symbolic roles such as the traveler's staff, and the thick mass of black clouds. This essay will be exploring how Hawthorne used symbolism to achieve an allegory within his short story.
In the short story “Young Goodman Brown,” by Nathaniel Hawthorne there are many allegories. The allegory that I’m going to focus you in on, is how Hawthorne used Faith in the story. In the story Faith is the name of Goodman Brown’s wife. Throughout Goodman Brown’s journey through the forest he runs into a man who looks as if he is in the same social status as Goodman Brown. The man tells Goodman Brown that he is late. Goodman Brown’s response to the man is that, “Faith kept me back awhile” (Hawthorne 62). This is where we see one example of the allegory of Faith. We later learn the man he had just ran into was the devil, who has disguised himself in human form. Before Goodman Brown left his house, Faith his wife told him to not go on this journey
As one of the United States' greatest founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin holds an extremely significant role in American history. He was considered brilliant, virtuous, and represented what it meant to be an American "renaissance man." It comes as no surprise then, that Franklin was portrayed almost mythically shortly after his death. As the man that discovered electricity, among other accomplishments, Franklin could easily be portrayed as superhuman, maybe even held to the standard of mythical gods. In Benjamin West's painting, Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky, Franklin is shown effortlessly commanding electricity from the sky. In this manner, Franklin is seen as a sort of "American Prometheus." In Greek mythology, Prometheus
