The Hero of the Anglo-Saxon Period In every culture, there are certain standards set forth for heroes. The epic poem Beowulf, renders a legendary hero. In the Anglo-Saxon culture, heroes must be strong, courageous and loyal. Without these defining features there are no heroes. Beowulf is a prime example of an Anglo-Saxon hero. He possesses relentless loyalty to his king and his allies, and his courage is unyielding. Beowulf's strength is exceptional, as the is able to conquer each of his adversaries and conducts endeavors of unparalleled endurance. Beowulf faces many monsters throughout the epic poem, three monsters he fights show a trace of Anglo-Saxon heroism in them. Even though they may also break the hero code on multiple occasions. Beowulf is a model Anglo-Saxon hero. The Anglo-Saxons believed that heroes should be many things, fearless, strong and loyal to his ring-giver and allies. Beowulf is the "strongest of the Geats--greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in the world" (110). He fights many monsters too strong for men, but defeats them with ease. Like Grendel, the troll-wife also possesses Anglo-Saxon heroic qualities. The troll-wife shows great loyalty to her son, Grendel, when she attempts to avenge his death. She brings Beowulf's sinking body to her battle hall and they start to duel it out (558). Beowulf failed to pay the wyrgild, so the troll-wife is justified and entitled to a fair fight with her sons killer. Grendel's mother also breaks the the hero code, many times. When she fights Beowulf, she squats "her weight on his stomach, drew a dagger, brown with dried blood and prepared to avenge her only son" (621). The troll-wife pulls a dagger on an unarmed opponent making the fight unfair, which is not honorable or heroic according to the Anglo-Saxon hero code. Regardless of the troll-wife's short comings, she still shows a glimmer of heroic
