Many years ago, a culture known as Anglo-Saxon composed literature that is now well-known among our English literature. One of the most common forms of Anglo-Saxon literature was epic poems. An epic poem is a long, narrative poem that is usually about heroic deeds and events that are significant to the culture of the past. Usually, epic poems feature one character, known as an epic hero. An epic hero is a brave and noble character that is admired for great achievements or affected by grand events. Epic heroes possess traits such as: courage, strength, and skill. Typically, they value honor and glory. As an example, Beowulf is a popular story that was written during this time period. Due to being an epic hero, Beowulf had a well-respected reputation, superior strength, and extreme courage. His great reputation is indicated numerous times within the passage. For example, he was known as “the strongest of the Geats-greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world” (ll. 110-111). Beowulf’s strength was revealed in the way that he was able to execute Grendel by ripping his arm from his body. “Grendel saw that his strength was deserting him, his claws bound fast, Higlac’s brave follower tearing at his hands. The monster’s hatred rose higher, but his power had gone. He twisted in pain, and the bleeding sinews deep in his shoulder snapped, muscle and bone split and broke”(ll.492-499). No other solider was able to perform this gruesome task, which indicates the strength that it required. Also, Beowulf’s desire to battle the dragon in his elderly state emphasized the degree of courage that he had.
