Best Practice Guidelines
Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) have become a global movement in nursing. Healthcare organizations, practitioners, and nursing associations have an opportunity to provide quality and accountability to patients at the time of care. (RNAO, 2012) The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) (n.d., p.2) said that “since 1925, RNAO has advocated for healthy public policy, promoted excellence in nursing practice, increased nursing contributions to shaping the health-care, and influenced decisions that affect nurses and the public they serve.”. Each account of evidence is investigated by a number of health care professionals, nurses, and public representatives to establish clinical, organizational, educational, and system-level recommendations. These recommendations will be graded on both qualitative and quantitative scales, and when these recommendations are approved they are revised by experts relative to the guideline (RNAO, n.d.). Following this process, the guideline is published. Every five years all guidelines are reviewed to assess the relevance of the evidence in terms of contemporary application. The Best Guidelines are selected to be revised and published with a new editor (RNAO, n.d.).
Best Practice Spotlight Organization
The Best Practice Spotlight Organizations (BPSO) funded in 1993 are organizations chosen by the RNAO in which they contribute to implement and evaluate the best practice guidelines. These organizations have access to many resources, such as expert consultation and support for being a member in the BPG program (RNAO, n.d.). There are two BSPO models to consider. The first one is BPSO Direct Model, which are single organizations that work directly with the RNAO to meet the BSPO requirements. The second is BSPO Host Model, which is both a national and international program responsible for selecting organizations interested in becoming part of the BPSOs.
