Best Practice Guidelines
Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) have become a global movement in nursing. Healthcare organizations, practitioners, and nursing associations have an opportunity to provide quality and accountability to patients at the time of care. (RNAO, 2012) The Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) (n.d., p.2) said that “since 1925, RNAO has advocated for healthy public policy, promoted excellence in nursing practice, increased nursing contributions to shaping the health-care, and influenced decisions that affect nurses and the public they serve.”. Each account of evidence is investigated by a number of health care professionals, nurses, and public representatives to establish clinical, organizational, educational, and system-level recommendations. These recommendations will be graded on both qualitative and quantitative scales, and when these recommendations are approved they are revised by experts relative to the guideline (RNAO, n.d.). Following this process, the guideline is published. Every five years all guidelines are reviewed to assess the relevance of the evidence in terms of contemporary application. The Best Guidelines are selected to be revised and published with a new editor (RNAO, n.d.).
Best Practice Spotlight Organization
The Best Practice Spotlight Organizations (BPSO) funded in 1993 are organizations chosen by the RNAO in which they contribute to implement and evaluate the best practice guidelines. These organizations have access to many resources, such as expert consultation and support for being a member in the BPG program (RNAO, n.d.). There are two BSPO models to consider. The first one is BPSO Direct Model, which are single organizations that work directly with the RNAO to meet the BSPO requirements. The second is BSPO Host Model, which is both a national and international program responsible for selecting organizations interested in becoming part of the BPSOs. Nurses deliver care to their patients based on information they have learned through many years of school and training. Training for nurses and other providers of care is founded on theories, research, and evidence based practice in the healthcare field. Theories, research, and evidence based practice are all important for providing care to patients and each can be used in a different manner depending on the situation. Clinicians often use research based evidence to design and implement care that is high-quality and cost effective for patients. Evidence based practice is an integral part of nursing care. According to the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, evidence based practice is defined as, “the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about patient care.” (AMSN) The use of evidence based practice has drastically improved patient outcomes, increased quality and safety of healthcare, and reduced costs for facilities. (Melnyk, 2016) In this paper I will provide the history of evidence based practice, how it has already been incorporated and impacted healthcare, and why it is important to nursing and healthcare as a whole.
Evidence-based practice is the practice of making clinical decisions based off the best available research evidence coupled with the nurse’s own expertise, while also taking into account, the patient’s assessments and own personal preferences. This use of research has proven effective at providing better outcomes and lower healthcare costs, yet there are several barriers, such as time, education, and support, which prevent nurses from consistently using evidence-based practice (AJN, 2012). The top three barriers to the use of evidence-based practice are lack of time, education, and support in implementing new practices and using them consistently.
Once an area of evidence-based practice has been chosen for investigation, the reviewer must locate current evidence sources and, using a structured approach, assess each for applicability to the issue being investigated. The aim of this paper is to use a Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklist (Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt, 2011) to support these sources of evidence into a review that discusses the importance of daily, high-level, multidisciplinary communication and patient safety. The summaries of these evaluations will be provided as an appraisal of each study.
Evidence-based practice is an approach used by health care professionals to continually use current best evidence-based research to make ethical and reliable decisions regarding patient care. “Research to promote evidence-based practice is becoming more and more a part of the regular work of health care leaders” (Grand Canyon University, 2015, p. 1). However, it is important to determine the difference between solid research and flawed research that provides unreliable inferences. Evidence-based research includes focusing on a clinical question; and includes the review and incorporation of several studies to strengthen the results of the new study (Grand Canyon University, 2015). Roddy et al. and Ganz et al. articles will be assessed to determine if the recommended changes were backed by solid research that warrants changes in a hospital.

The purpose of a systematic review is to attempt to find, evaluate and synthesize high quality research relevant to the research question. A systematic review uses carefully developed data collection and sampling procedures that are put in place in advance as a protocol. (Polit, 2012). Itroduction: Evidence-based practice is an approach to medicine that uses scientific evidence to determine the best practice (Beyea & Slattery, 2006). As nurses perform their daily tasks they must continually ask themselves, “What is the evidence for this intervention?”. Nurses are well positioned to question current nursing practices and use evidence to make care more effective. In order to improve patients’ outcomes it is the responsibility of the nurse to transition evidence-based practice into the norm, through application of daily practice (Flynn Makic, Rauen, Watson & Will Poteet, 2014). Continual evaluation of current practice must be performed to ensure the use of evidence-based practice opposed to practice based upon tradition. The implementation of evidence-based practice standardizes healthcare practices and diminishes groundless variations within care. These variations lead to the production of uncertain health outcomes (Stevens, 2013).
Evidence Based Practice is crucial to support care provided to patient. It is imperative to get evidence base on proven clinical practice that provides valuable insights about human health and illness as per Polit and Beck (2017). The researcher must pick a topic to be research on and A PICOT question formulated. These questions help as a guidance on the research. The researcher then check to see what can be retrieve that are of importances to topic. In most case narrowing of the questions may help. The levels of evidence are important because it help with identifying hierarchy of evidence. The higher the Hierarchy of evidence the better evidence base information.
Over the course of decades medical treatment has advanced causing an increase in the wellness of patient clinical outcomes.
