Between Shades of Gray is a historical fiction written by the American author, Ruta Sepetys. This is a story of about war, loss, love, family and hope. I am a voracious reader and have read numerous different books with diverse genres. To name a few, I have read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, another historical fiction set in the same time period, The Giver by Lois Lowry, a young-adult fiction about a young boy in a seemingly utopian society and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, a fantasy novel about a company of dwarves on a quest with a tag-along hobbit and a wayward wizard. Lina’s romance is subtle and delicate from the start of the book to the end. It is even more unexpected for them to find such pockets of normalcy in the midst of the pain and suffering around them. “[Lina] pulled

However, my favourite character was actually Elena Vilkas, the mother of the main character, Lina. She was arguably the most inspiring character in the book, staying positive through all the trying times. 1. Lina Vilkas is the fifteen year old protagonist of Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys. Lina has long, wavy, honey-colored hair and blue eyes. She is headstrong, impulsive, and outspoken, which puts her in danger. Though it is risky, she uses her art to express her emotions and opinions. She was accepted into art school because of her talent. Lina is protective of her younger brother, and loves her family.
“The writings and drawings you hold in your hands were buried in the year 1954, after returning from Siberia with my brother, where we were imprisoned for twelve years.” (page 336) Between Shades of Gray is a story about a fifteen year old girl who has to fight for her survival and find her way back home to Lithuania after her deportation to Siberia. Although there are many conflicts throughout this story, it mostly focuses on the conflict between the main character, Lina, and the NKVD, or the Russian secret officers that capture Lina and her family.
Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys is a book about a girl named Lina Vilkas. This book took place in 1941, the time when World War 2 was going on. Lina is fifteen years old and has a wonderful family. In the book she would get arrested by the Soviet Union because she was Lithuanian and Joseph Stalin, the leader of the country at the time, did not except this. Lina, her brother, and her mother were all separated from Lina’s father because he got taken to a different camp. Lina and her family got loaded onto a train and they were sent to the north (Siberia) where they would have to work and live in very harsh and strong conditions. That morning, my brother’s was worth a pocket watch.” (ch. 7, pg 27) Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys, is a novel that portrays the hardships of the prisoners of war's lives. The setting for this book changes over short and some long periods of time, the weather, time, atmosphere and location all are affected during Lina and her family’s time in Soviet occupied countries.
Since between shades of gray is from a teenage girls perspective, you don't only see what horrible situations she went through, but also the struggle of being a teenager. Lina, the protagonist goes through so much to keep her family strong and together.
The story began with featuring the introduction of the matriarch of the family, Celia del Pino. Her dedication to the El Lider of the revolution displayed the admirable connection of Fidel Castro’s active female supporter, Celia Sanchez. Celia Sanchez who was described by Biographer, Peter Borne as “being attracted to Fidel’s revolutionary movement” (Untold Story). Celia Sanchez remained dedicated to Fidel’s revolution for twenty years, occupying important government markers up until her death in the 80’s (Untold Story). Just as Celia del Pino, her dedication to El Lider was extremely apparent throughout the entire development of the story.
This 3 part story takes place in a train car , at a beet farm near a village (both take place in Russia), and in a camp in the arctic. It focuses on the relationship and story of the people in the train car, mostly on 1 family.

The article “Overview of “The Hobbit”” by Don Akers examines the creative philosophy of Tolkien and the influence in The Hobbit on contemporary fantasy literature and popular culture throughout the story. Converging just on the parts about The Hobbit was simply due to the way the article was set-up and illustrated. Don Akers specifically discusses the adventures Bilbo goes on in “The Hobbit” novel. This book focuses more on mythology and how to link them with the past. Finally, Tolkien talks about the fantasy of the novel and the cultures of the past and the present.
