Between Shades of Gray is a historical fiction written by the American author, Ruta Sepetys. This is a story of about war, loss, love, family and hope. I am a voracious reader and have read numerous different books with diverse genres. To name a few, I have read The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, another historical fiction set in the same time period, The Giver by Lois Lowry, a young-adult fiction about a young boy in a seemingly utopian society and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, a fantasy novel about a company of dwarves on a quest with a tag-along hobbit and a wayward wizard. On a whim, my friends and I bought a romance novel called Heart of Thunder by Johanna Lindsey for a friend of ours, and decided to read it ourselves. He was a source of hope for Lina and he, in part, gave her a reason to live after they had been separated. He gave a book to Lina to read in his absence, and in it he had written little notes saying that he was thinking of her and wondering if she was thinking of him too (303). His and
Lina’s romance is subtle and delicate from the start of the book to the end. It is even more unexpected for them to find such pockets of normalcy in the midst of the pain and suffering around them. “[Lina] pulled
[her] coat closed and put [her] hands in [her] pockets. That's when [Lina] felt it. The stone. Andrius had slipped it into [her] pocket. [She] stood up to let him know [she] had found it. He was gone (248).”

However, my favourite character was actually Elena Vilkas, the mother of the main character, Lina. She was arguably the most inspiring character in the book, staying positive through all the trying times.
