Luckily, she landed success as a model where she became one of the first African American women to appear on the cover of Seventeen Magazine. Although being a model was a great experience for Houston, she still did not give up her dreams of becoming a famous musical artist. So by the time Whitney Houston was 19 years old, she was finally discovered while singing in a nightclub by music mogul of Arista Records, Clive Davis. As Houston’s manager, Clive immediately transformed her musical career where she moved from being a gospel artist to a major pop artist (Bio.com).

Tina’s original name is Anna Mae Bullock and was born on November 26, 1939 in Brownsville, Tennessee (THE IKE AND TINA TURNER REVUE ). Tina and her sister were abandoned by their parents at an early age and so they went on with their grandparents, who raised them (Tina Turner Biography). TIna had moved to St. Louis and would go to the Club Manhattan and that is where her talent was noticed by a drummer of Kings of Rhythm when she was singing along to their song while she was in the audience (THE IKE AND TINA TURNER REVUE). She started off with singing duets with Ike Turner, who was at the moment in the Kings of Rhythm, and then got recognized in the music industry, but later on goes onto her own solo music career (Tina Turner Biography). While she did start off badly, Tina was still able to make choices in order to move on to a better place. This shows that Tina had the strength to go through tough problems and now she is a happy
Bessie Smith was born around 1894 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to a poverty stricken family. First orphaned at a young age then adopted by relatives, she took to singing on the streets as a way to make extra money. At nine years old, she made her first appearance on stage at the Ivory Theater.3 By her late teens, she was performing in Moses Stokes's traveling minstrel show; later, in 1912, she joined the famous Rabbit Foot Minstrels. It was here that she met Ma Rainey, who took Smith under her wing and became her
After listening to a few of Beyonce’s songs, it was quite difficult to pick just one song to do, since they’re all brilliant. In the end, I decided to do this song because it went along with a research paper that I just had to do (which was on feminism). Aside from that, Run the World (Girls) was one of my favorite songs to watch Beyonce perform at awards shows in the past.

Songs like “Ain’t no mountain high enough”, “My Girl”, and “ABC” have shaped American history in ways that people don’t even realize. We wouldn’t be listing to artist like Beyoncé, Drake, and John Legend if these former artists didn’t write and/or perform these songs. They have allowed African American music to blossom to what it is known for today. If these artists did not continue to write and produce music, they would have never gotten anywhere and we wouldn’t have the African American artist we love today. This paper will now go into more specific African American singer, songwriters, and composers.

In 21st century North America, there is a strange, seemingly-unanimous idea that, to fit the norm, one must be white, Christian and male. While, over the course of the latter 20th century and in the past decade, this has changed, the norm is very much still Christian and male; African-Americans now fit into the “All-American” stereotype, for the most part. However, there are, of course, outliers – deviants from the standard norm; these outliers make one wonder what the norm truly is, why it is so, how did it get to be that way, and what the norm will be in the future. Kanye West's 2004 single titled “Jesus Walks” is written as a ode to Jesus helping him and every other Christian through hard times in their life. Sampling

Beyonce Knowles and Christina Aguilera had similarities and differences expressing beauty and society’s take on it. Beyonce communicated in her video that women don’t need to conform to society to fit in and be like everyone else. If that were the case we would’ve all been created the same way. In Christina Aguilera’s video, she communicated that the opinions and words spoken about you or even said to you shouldn’t be the perception that you gain for yourself. The intended audience of the two videos were slightly different based on what you saw in the video.
