In Boulder, Colorado, an owner of Boulder Bookstore, David Bolduc, met Jeff Milchin in 1997. Milchin is a community activist and founder of Reclaim Democracy Org. His org. promotes grassroots democracy and works to restore democratic authority over corporations. In 1998, the two men, along with ten local businesses, formed BIBA, Boulder Independent Business Alliance. This alliance is against take over of local businesses from out of town chains. It has a “local or chain” choice for the community. The membership for BIBA includes reduced advertising costs with local media, and marketing tools in specific business sectors. This in turn helps out the business as well as the surrounding area. Big retail chains take money away from the community. Many local businesses are closing as the big retail company’s take over. They can spread over numerous cities, taking business away from local residents. Many communities are forming business alliances. It has more people acting on protecting local businesses. Alliances make city officials more aware and help stop big businesses from moving in and taking over. Boulder, Colorado is a good example of how to rally the community together to save local businesses and keep out big corporations. This article means a lot to me, coming from a small town. Many local businesses I grew up with have shut down. There are many McDonalds, and Subways, and other chains, including Wal-Mart. I miss the old businesses. If my town could have formed an alliance, maybe they would have been able to save some locally owned business. There are some left, that manage to do well, and the owners are part of the community.
