“Before him lies the great bottom-most cellar or dungeon-hall of the ancient dwarves right at the Mountain’s root. It is almost dark so that its vastness can only be dimly guessed, but rising from the near side of the rocky floor there is a great glow. The glow of Smaug!” (Tolkien 215). This particular passage that describes a horrific scene about a dragon, is from a novel called The Hobbit, and was written by J.R.R Tolkien. Later on, this book was also made into a movie, which was directed by Peter Jackson, that made several changes to make his movie seem more interesting but not as accordingly to the author’s purpose. The story is about a young Hobbit, whose name is Bilbo Baggins. “Hobbit’s” are not known for having adventures. In Fact, they …show more content…
It states here, in the chapter of Inside Information, “Already they had come to respect little Bilbo. Now he had become the real leader in their adventure. He had begun to have ideas and plans of his own” (Tolkien 221). Here, the author clearly identifies how Bilbo is suppose to be the new team leader and how he is evolving into an intimately smarter hobbit, than when he first began his journey with the dwarves. It shows how he is developing leadership skills and also getting more intelligent throughout his trip. In contrast, the movie shows how Thorin takes charge in planning and decision making (Jackson). He did this to connect the sequel, Lord Of The Ring. This was not very effective because it twists the purpose of J.R.R Tolkien’s reason for having Bilbo in the scene. The story is suppose to be mainly about how Bilbo develops a more high standard personality. In the movie, it has Thorin speaking almost all the time and Thorin making the great impacts in their times of need (Jackson). They zoom in on his face in most parts of the movie. The way Peter Jackson manipulated this scene, took away the main idea, …show more content…
In the book, it is said that Bilbo is the one who fights Smaug and defeats him. The author wrote, “It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterwards were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait…” (Tolkien 214-215). Here, it clearly says that Bilbo fights the dragon alone in the mountain, without support from the dwarves. The purpose for this is to make the readers see that Bilbo is transforming to be much more brave, strong, and clever. This way, it is more convincing to think that he can take on the big boss all by himself. J.R.R Tolkien wants Bilbo to be more independent in this situation and not rely on the dwarves. This impacts the storyline by having the readers look back and compare how Bilbo behaved before he had any experience of being a burglar. On the other hand, the movie has Smaug conflicting with the rest of Bilbo’s friends, making Bilbo seem useless in the background. Although Bilbo was alone with the dragon for a few minutes, he had to call the dwarves for help afterward. The movie also has the dwarves distracting Smaug, and Bilbo had to go along with Thorin’s plan, Bilbo was suppose to be in place of Thorn. The whole idea of Bilbo battling
Bilbo Baggins was a timid hobbit that lived in a small hole and kept to himself. Not until a wizard named Gandalf persuaded him to go on an adventure with himself and a group of dwarves. The dwarves weren’t very fond of Bilbo coming with them, but they would have to put up with it. Bilbo left the luxury of his home to join their quest, not knowing the dangers that lie ahead. But, Bilbo still proved quite a brave hobbit when faced against challenges. He explored a side of himself he had never explored before! Whether is was battling against an army of spiders, or an army of goblins, Bilbo never ceased to exceed the dwarves’ expectations. They eventually gave him respect and honored him. “They knew only
Bilbo Baggins changes a lot in the novel The Hobbit. In the beginning he is a small peaceful Hobbit who lives in Hobbiton. He loves to keep things in order, and hates things that are disorganized. “Please be careful,” and “Please don’t trouble. I can manage” (Tolkein, 12). Then one day a wizard by the name of Gandalf comes and gives Bilbo the opportunity to go on an adventure. Bilbo turns his offer down, but the next day thirteen dwarves come to his house. They have meals together and they sleep at Bilbo’s house. Gandalf then convinces him to go on an adventure with them. Bilbo is many things, in the very begging he is flat, static, main, and he is the protagonist. By the end of the story he is round, dynamic, main, and he is still the
The protagonist Bilbo Baggins is fully transformed throughout the Hobbit. He is first portrayed as a timid hobbit who ultimately becomes a leader. Throughout the novel Bilbo comes in contact with spiders, a multitude of goblins, and a villainous dragon. His transformation begins when a wizard named Gandalf invites him on an adventure that will shape his entire life. Also, he is introduced to a group of dwarves lead by Thorin, who are on a quest to reclaim stolen family treasure from Smaug, a dragon. This is all illustrated through Bilbo’s newfound bravery, leadership, and intelligence.
Bilbo gets himself into a vast predicament that seems impossible to conquer, but one way or another he finds a way to escape, while still having his bravery and strength still intacted. He defeats the slimy creature Gollum and all the goblins in his path. Even though this task is a nightmare that seems impossible, Bilbo finds a way and earns the respect of his fellow companions. “It is a fact that Bilbo’s reputation went up a great deal with the dwarves after this. If they had doubted still doubted that he was really a first-class burglar...they doubted no longer” (Tolkien 93). He was a hero inside and he was finally beginning to see himself as
Another important part of the story was when J.R.R Tolkien started Bilbo off as a humble, small hobbit then gradually maturing in the story into a brave warrior doing what it takes to make things right. Tolkien’s writing helps the readers feel like they are in Bilbo’s shoes and also feel that they become braver and wiser as the story goes on. Tolkien’s elaborative description of Bilbo throughout the story helps show that bravery does come in all shapes and sizes. In addition, Tolkien first starts the story with some doubt and whether or not Bilbo can survive this strenuous journey. Tolkien gives a sense of doubt to the readers questioning them if Bilbo will survive or even go on the journey or will he become a brave warrior. Tolkien then makes Bilbo go on the journey and helps begin a new theme, “It’s good to try something new.” This was Bilbo’s first journey so it was obviously something new for Bilbo and the readers to read. After that, Bilbo’s courage and bravery builds up and he evolves greatly as a character. Tolkien slowly builds up Bilbo’s courage throughout the story to prove the theme that “It’s good to try something new.” It was good for Bilbo to go on the journey and good for the reader as they watch watch Bilbo become a better and braver character. This is why J.R.R Tolkien’s gradual style of writing helps support both of
Bilbo is a good man but when he sees the ring, he seems to be transforming into a different man and then going back to normal again after controlling himself. He is mysterious for his nephew Frodo because of being odd and acting strange but had been honest and true by telling the reason behind all of it.
J.R.R. Tolkien is best knowing for his work in the series “Lord of the Rings”, which is held to be one of the best told modern day folklore. It consists of a world inhabited by mythical and supernatural beings. In his book “The Hobbit”, which is also taken place in this world, we meet our unlikely hero Bilbo Baggins. Hobbits are known not to be very adventurous. They live in comfort and do what is expected from them. “People considered them very respectable, not only because most of them were rich, but also because they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected.” (Tolkien 4) It is this factor that makes Bilbo Baggins remarkable. “The hobbit whose uneventful life as a comfortable bachelor at Bag End is forever upset by the intervention of Gandalf the wizard who leads Thorin Oakenshield and his company of dwarfs to Bilbo’s door with promise that Bilbo will prove to be a daring and resourceful burglar.” (Lawler) The dwarves will recruit Mr. Baggins to be their burglar, to try and steal back their treasure from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Bilbo becomes an unintentional hero because of his skills. Hobbits are known to be very quick, and very quiet. Since he possesses all of these skills, plus his cleverness and wits, Bilbo will prove to be a key character in the story. Bilbo Baggins is an unexpected hero in Tolkien’s story “The Hobbit”.
Bilbo Baggins, throughout the story, has had to fight himself in many situations. Almost every chapter he has to overcome his fears and change himself. In the beginning of the story, Bilbo is a humble young man in a nice house, with no need or want for adventure. An old man named Gandalf comes and talks to him about adventure, to which Bilbo declines. So the Gandalf put a marking on his door. The next day thirteen dwarves come to his house and start to make themselves at home uninvited, and then they begin to speak of adventure. So this where Bilbo decides to go for an adventure. Bilbo has been known for not being very adventurous, he always stayed at home. So he embarks on the journey, and already he is transforming into a new hobbit.
This is very evident because in the most simple of terms Bilbo remains to be a very minimal hobbit that enjoys the most simple things in life; the difference is that now he is more wise than the majority of his peers. The adventures built him up to become the person that he is today, the very simple but influential advice given to him by Gandalf says “Don’t be a fool Mr. Baggins if you can help it.” (231) After receiving these very wise words it hits him that simplicity is the key to success. Gandalf is credited to being Bilbo’s greatest teacher and influencer, without Gandalf, Bilbo would not be the hobbit he is today. The Hobbit is a wonderful book full of lessons to be taught to us to make us better people. Author J.R.R. Tolkien encapsulates the genre of fantasy and applies real world parallels to really connect the reader with Bilbo, The Hobbit is a work of art which will stay a classic for years to
That’s what makes this book so enjoyable, the way Tolkien masterfully creates an aristocratic hobbit that just about everybody can relate to and then to show the process of which Bilbo learn a valuable lesson. My favorite part of the whole story is that Bilbo really is just a normal person, and in novels, that seems to be scarce in characters, they all seem to be predestined for greatness but Tolkien’s hobbit is “Inclined to be fat of the stomach”(the hobbit p2) for goodness sake! Tolkien’s The Hobbit should be read to all, especially those who hunger for silly songs of the elves and a love of the
Further along the story the Dwarves go into a cave where Bilbo finds a ring. This ring happens to belong to Gollum who likes to eat anything he sees. Then Gollum and Bilbo run into each other and they have a riddle contest. Bilbo ends up accidently beating Gollum in the contest(71)You can start to tell from Bilbo’s actions that he is getting more and more brave. He does not start to freak out like he used to when something went wrong but he calms down and breaks down the situation. His excelling bravery is in turn moving the story due to him being able to adventure just like a dwarf.Bilbo is getting used to doing some daring things. He pick-pocketed a big, scary, hungry troll even though it could have easily killed him.Bilbo is starting to gain a good reputation among his friends due to his bravery.
Despite all these differences, Bilbo is still accepted as a hero in today’s society and does share some traits with the classic hero. One of the reasons I believe he is accepted in today’s society is because he is easy to relate to, demonstrating pleasure in his domestic lifestyle, but at the same time, possessing a natural curiosity and a desire to enjoy the occasional adventure outside his comfort zone. He also has the admirable quality of loyalty and persistence. Even when “the dwarves wanted to know why he had ever been brought at all, why he could not stick to his friends and come along with them, and why the wizard had not chosen someone with more sense, and that ‘He has been more trouble than use so far,’ said one” (Tolkien 44), Bilbo still stuck by their side and helped them to the best of his abilities. Just like the Cinderella hero, Bilbo was probably not the dwarves’ first choice
Thorin does anything for the company to be safe when they are in contact with Smaug, in the novel it states, “‘Nonsense’ said Thorin recovering his dignity. ‘We cannot leave them!’” (Tolkien 218). Tolkien’s intent was to make Thorin seem noble and that he will never leave his friends/company behind. This also impacts the story time because it sets the readers to think that Thorin is a noble person. However in the movie Jackson gives a scene where Thorin doesn’t want to go in and help Bilbo when Smaug is chasing/ harassing Bilbo (Jackson). In addition to that, Jackson also includes a scene when Thorin puts a sword to Bilbo’s neck for not having the Arkenstone (Jackson). Jackson’s purpose in adding this scene was to share that Thorin is not noble in this particular scene for not wanting to do anything to help/save Bilbo and putting a sword to his neck for not having the treasure. To include, Jackson also amplifies the suspense in these scenes. He does this by creating loud suspenseful music with a fast tempo when Bilbo is being chased by Smaug while Thorin is talking about not helping Bilbo outside of the temple. In addition Jackson sets low key lighting to set the mood and tone as well as the low/high and close up angles. All in all, the change that Jackson made in comparison to the novel is
The group is then captured, this time by goblins. Gandalf again is the savior, but at this time Bilbo gets separated from the group. This leads him to Gollum and the ring. Even though Gandalf saved the dwarves, outsmarting Gollum and using the ring to escape from Gollum and the goblins, shows Bilbo has the skills to be a real hero.
A hobbit is a very small human like creature whose daily activities consist of running from humans and going about what would be a stereotypical normal human day. A hobbits’ hole is his sanctuary; his safe haven. They go there to be alone and live comfortably throughout their small lives. In a small town consisting of hobbit holes lives Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo is the hero figure of this mystical fantasy; The Hobbit. In the beginning Bilbo does not show very promising traits as a hero figure. At least not until thirteen dwarves and one wizard pull him from his peace to drag him into a journey that would forever change his perspective on life and his identity.
