It all begins when a mysterious wizard by the name of Gandalf talks him to go on an adventure. Immediately, Bilbo turns down his offer since he was not interested in any adventures taking him away from his safe village. However, the next day, thirteen dwarves came to his house, reuniting to later set off on their quest. Soon, Bilbo finds out that he’s been recruited, unwillingly, as a burglar into Thorin’s expedition to retrieve his treasure. He becomes so frighten that he faints but reluctantly accepts. Nonetheless, the dwarves initially see him as a sort of a child who cannot possibly help them in their quest for treasure, but Gandalf assures them that there was more of the hobbit than meets the eye.
The main protagonist of this story is Bilbo Baggins, who is known for being very sneaky and quiet, he is amongst a very small elite group of Hobbit’s who have a knack for adventure, with some convincing he agreed to join Thorin and his group of dwarves because 13 is an unlucky number, but little did they know that he would play such an important role in their quest.
When he starts he off, he is just a normal person who lives a normal life until he is asked to go on an adventure at first he is frightened but then decides to go. Right after he sets off on his journey after a few nights he stays at an inn and thinks about how the last few days were “Bilbo would gladly have stopped there forever and ever – even supposing a wish would have taken him right back to his hobbit-hole without trouble” (Tolkien 48). In this excerpt he wishes he could go home after having a bad trip but when he realizes that the dwarves have no home to go back to so he continues on knowing it wouldn't be right to leave them. Even though he could be sitting comfortably at home, he would rather help a stranger reclaim their home.
Thesis: In The Hobbit, Tolkien wants to show the reader that anyone, from any background can step up to a challenge, and be extraordinary rather than ordinary.
At this time, Thorin and the other dwarves gain more respect for the hobbit, who was once doubted and looked down upon. Bilbo’s intelligence and resourcefulness seems much more remarkable than Thorin’s integrity; since Thorin was considering on telling the elves about their journey. In this chapter, Bilbo has become responsible for the dwarves; as he uses his advantageous skills to steal food for them. The quote, “When he heard Bilbo’s voice through the keyhole, he could hardly believe his ears.” This indicated that Thorin was so relieved and reassured when Bilbo discovered him, because he knew he could rely on Bilbo to help him and the other dwarves escape. This chapter demonstrates how Bilbo, rather small; but he is a bright ray of hope for the dwarves when they are in
Many of us 7th graders think of a hero as something that has super powers. That is not always what a hero is, they could be the protagonist in a book. A hero that means a lot to me is Bilbo. “There he lay, a vast red-golden dragon, fast asleep; a thrumming came from his jaws and nostrils,” Bilbo Baggins was a self-centered hobbit who only cared about his well being. Bilbo the Hobbit, persuaded by an old wizard named Gandalf, to set out on a quest with thirteen militant dwarves. Seized by a self-assured, fire-breathing dragon named Smaug, the dwarves went on a challenging adventure to reclaim their kingdom, retrieve back the gold that was kept inside the palace, and defeat Smaug for good. Along the way, Bilbo found a magical ring and was able to turn invisible, which is a very useful technique for rescuing the dwarves. They manage to pass many obstacles and met different types of villains. At the end, Bilbo and the dwarves did not go up against Smaug, instead Bard the Bowman from Lake-men defeated Smaug and after that the Battle of the Five Armies began.
Bilbo’s story is a story of a hero’s journey. From his origins we do not see that Bilbo likes to go on adventures. However, his mother’s side of the family got the best of him and he does decide to go on the adventure. We will look at his call to adventure and why he decided to go on the trip. Next, we will look at Bilbo and the weapons and supernatural help he used. The final aspect we’ll look at is Bilbo’s trials and transformations and goals during Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
When Gandalf visits Bilbo he invited Bilbo to join him on an adventure, which Bilbo declines since he is deathly afraid of leaving his home. The next day he is visited by dwarves who believe that he can help them on their journey to Lonely Mountain to recover their ancestral treasure. The comments made by the Dwarves made Bilbo realize that Gandalf had said that Bilbo was a burglar. Bilbo eventually agrees to go, but then changes his mind the next morning, but eventually agrees to go again. After Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves had been traveling for a while Bilbo starts to regret coming on the adventure as the landscape gets a lot more hostile. Shortly after this

During the journey, Bilbo was shown as a soft and humble character that turns into a character full of courage and adventure. In this essay, I will prove that Bilbo has changed and developed into a brave and wise hobbit and at points he was also a trusted leader. The first piece of evidence in the book is in the Chapter, “Riddles in the Dark.” In that chapter Bilbo is lost in a cave and finds a ring that will later be shown as a ring of magic.
As the adventure continues, Bilbo shows a vast amount of inner strength slowly become the main force holding the group of the 13 dwarves together. Not to mention helping the dwarves escape from the palace by putting them in barrels into the river and floating them to safety.
