There are many outlying themes in novels and plays that are easily seen. But what makes these plays or novels to be an even more interesting read is underlying themes, or oppositions. To take something from the surface is easy, any author or director would say the same thing. After reading the play Wit there seems to be much outlying binary opposition in the play that seemed to be intended. Look a little deeper and there seems to be even more, almost as if not intended by the director. Two people or ideas clashing against one another are what make this particular play fascinating. Either way intended or not intended they are present and they are what make the play so interesting and very important to the plot.

This ties into the binary opposition research v human being, it is clear that Jason has no view on the meaning of life, he even says he doesn’t want to get tied up in the meaning of life. And he views Vivian as an object rather than a human being; she is just research to him, not a person. When Jason sees Vivian in such pain there is almost no emotion attached, he asks “how are you feeling” to Vivian as almost as if it’s the necessary protocol, he doesn’t care how she’s feeling, he just wants to know if the treatment the doctors are giving is successful and how to fix it. You could easily say he is selfish, but clearly he doesn’t know the kind of pain she’s going through during the treatment. There is one person that does understand the pain and suffering she is going through and that is the primary nurse, Susie. This causes much conflict between the Susie and Jason. Susie clearly has a view on the meaning of life; she is caring and compassionate and sees life through Vivian’s eyes. She is the opposite of Jason; she could care less about the research. There are a few places in the play were this is seen, when Vivian comes back to the hospital, Susie asks Jason for a lesser dose from Kelekian, but Jason refuses. And the most important place where we see Jason and Susie clash is the end of the play. When Vivian is dead at the end of the play, Jason calls for the recovery team to try to revive her but Vivian wanted dnr, or do not
The depiction of timeless issues such as these is what makes the storyline of the play compelling to me.
about hate as it is about love and the morals of society. The play is
Throughout the play there are many themes leading up to and causing the chief event.
Despite the obvious conflict between the pair of families, Shakespeare still shows conflict through other ways. Capulet argues with his daughter Juliet over her refusal to marry Paris, for example. Of course, there are other themes included within the play, and these often inter-relate or contrast with the prevailing theme of conflict. For example, there is a relatively strong theme of love, mostly between Romeo and Juliet, however this is affected by the conflict between Capulet & Juliet and Romeo & Tybalt amongst others, making Romeo and Juliet relationship a struggle; this is vital to the play’s storyline. So therefore, without this element of conflict, the storyline is less effective.
Firstly let us consider conflict. In each act of the play, we see the overpowering desire to belong leading to a climax of conflict
The overall dramatic meaning of this play has been successfully shown by the elements of drama. The
THESIS: Fear is the primary emotion and the central motivating factor that influenced the outcome of the play as it dominated and controlled the nature of multiple characters.
Another theme expressed in act 1, was anger, specifically with the soldiers vs the civilians. For example, Act 1, scene 2, there is an argument between a WWII Veteran and a common hippie. The veteran says things like “Don't you curse at me, you punk! I'm an American, not some dope-smoking flower child who's nothing but a coward.” (act 1, scene 2). This line expresses the anger from the soldier has for people, like the hippie, not being brave enough to stand up and fight for America. The hippies believing everyone should be peaceful with one and never have any problems with the rest of the world is something that isn’t realistic to the soldier, and that’s why he was angry- you have to fight of it and stand your ground.
TOPIC: Many plays and novels use contrasting places (for example, two countries, two cities or towns, two houses, or the land and the sea) to represent opposed forces or ideas that are central to the meaning of the work. Choose a novel or play that contrasts two such places. Write an essay explaining how the places differ, what each place represents, and how their contrast contributes to the meaning of the work.
The first element, thought/theme/ideas, encompasses what the play means. Although they don’t directly state any themes there are two clear meanings to this play. The first theme or meaning is you have to stand up for what you believe in or what you believe is not right. For example, Juror 8 believes the kid on trial did not murder his father while all other eleven jurors did believe so. As he talked, using hard evidence, he slowly persuaded everyone until they believed the kid was innocent although one of them was racially biased and others strongly believed what they said. Another theme is you can’t make immense decisions based on opinions or prior judgements but rather on what is genuinely true whether it affects your life.

The key themes were humanism, which focused on human beings and their potential as well as the idea of perfect beauty. The beautiful courteous language used by the characters in the play reveal the concepts of humanism during the Renaissance. The characters sometimes surpass one another with multifarious and humorous words in the play. One of the best examples of this is of Benedick who makes fanciful statements on a regular basis. He even makes fun of Claudio for his use of the same rhetorical flair stating, “his words are a very fantastical banquet, just so many strange dishes.”*6 The new language was a new a way to learning, bringing out art and beauty in a better way. Each character in Shakespeare’s plays is individuals. It is their own mind that they work with. They are not governed by some other mind. Don John, a character in the play is seen using the powers of his own mind to constantly think and devise plans and ideas. Each of the main characters is able to successfully represent some aspect of Renaissance humanism, whether it is by the inner workings of their minds, their physical appearance, or their ability to create beauty with words and use this as a skill. Shakespeare creates a perfect sense a Renaissance world by constructing characters that adhere to the philosophies of the
