Imagine the idea of living in a society where you are segregated from your peers as a result of the colour of your skin. Envision living in a place that you no longer wish to call home because the people around you are being eradicated left right and center.
On a day to day basis African-American individuals are diminished on account of prejudicial biases. Therefore, the movement “Black Lives Matter” has been constructed. It is a network of people working together to rebuild the black liberation movement. After his death, a group of protesters chanting “black lives matter” shut down a local shopping mall which lead to further deaths of unarmed black men. The phrase started appearing on t-shirts and posters banners everywhere. Black Lives Matter surfaced and the movement created itself. There are now more than 37 movement chapters in the U.S and one in Canada. “The movement doesn’t win if there’s only a small set of people who understand the solutions. It wins when there’s a broad understanding that we need a system that doesn’t kill people, when a critical mass of citizens can envision what that looks like, and what concrete steps are taken to make it happen.” Says Deray Mckesson, a 29-year-old man who drove 600 miles to witness the Ferguson scene himself. A post on the internet can organize a protest in a matter of minutes. This is where the power lies. There are videos being willingly taken knowing that they are going to be spread worldwide. For example, a video of a white officer pinning a 14-year-old girl to the ground and pulling a gun on two teenage boys was posted on YouTube where it received half a million views in minutes.
In addition to social medias significance, online activism has made sure we know victim’s names that have been victims of fatal violence at the hands of police. Authority figures were never questioned as to why they did the things they do, until now. People are now linking together different incidents and putting them together as a whole.
