To me, any kind of art presents an opportunity to gain a new perspective on things. Poetry, music, painting, and even dance, can all be used to portray the beauty of the world to audiences. However, they can also be used to portray overlooked, even dark, sides of the world. I believe that poetry is able to do this better than any other art form. As stated in a previous journal, poets are not confined to the normal rules and regulations that other writers might be. They can write what they feel and more importantly in this case, they can write what they see. Naomi Shihab Nye addresses this perfectly when she says, "that was the job of poems, we decided. With that being said, I believe that any poet has the ability to educate or enlighten another person on otherwise overlooked parts of our society, and I believe that it’s beautiful but also frightening that poetry can almost be a more constructive factor to our youth than our news stations, schools, or churches. This quote presents also an interesting perspective if you think about our Service-Learning Project and the women involved. If we were to search the internet for poems about women, substance abuse, or prison, I’m sure we could find countless results. With that being said, these poems can give us a “sense up close,” as Naomi Shihab Nye worded it, of what these women’s lives might be like. Most of us cannot connect with their experiences because many of our lives have been so much different than theirs. However, there are poems out there that can give us a view of the world from their eyes.

Sekou Sundiata:
One of the most beautiful parts about poetry is that you are free to write however you want. There is no stencil or cookie cutter templet to writing good poetry, and if you compare poems from any two poets, no two will be alike. One reason for this is that you are free to write you poem in your own language. This freedom is what allowed Sekou Sundiata to finally get into poetry. He states, "there was a hit song by James Brown which had that line, so it was a slang term, but this man made literature out of it and that really enabled me.
