From time to time we all hear that dreadful five letter word; “essay”. Even though I am sure that we would all like to delete the word from existence, unfortunately, it will go on being an annoying part of high school. Many students hear this word and immediately begin to worry about whether or not they have a sufficient amount of time to write it, or if they can even write an essay good enough to get an acceptable grade on it. They struggle with not knowing how to write an effective essay. Most students really struggle getting across the idea that they want to tell their readers. "When I came to write my first assignment, I cried," says Daphne Elliston (from essay writing trips you up). "I just didn't know what I was doing." The writing in …show more content…
Just because you have stated your thesis and have given your opinion on the subject, does not suddenly make your opinion true. The body of your essay, which will contain your three arguments, is what will prove what you have already stated in your thesis. The number amount of your body might not always be three paragraphs, but the typical high school or college essay will be. Each of your three arguments, or main ideas, will be put at the beginning of each of your paragraphs. Write the Body Paragraphs states that you should, “Start by writing down one of your main ideas, in sentence form. Next, write down each of your supporting points for that main idea, but leave four or five lines in between each point. In the space under each point, write down some elaboration for that point. If you wish, include a summary sentence for each paragraph. This is not generally needed, however, and such sentences have a tendency to sound stilted, so be cautious about using them. Once you have fleshed out each of your body paragraphs, one for each main point, you are ready to continue.” It is also important to keep in mind that while you are writing your essay that you want to try your best to try to keep from writing in first or second person. You want to try to maintain an objective voice while working and work on the paper by using third person. If you struggle with the habit of using “I think”, “I feel”, or “I believe”, than it is best to look over your paper before you turn it in to make sure that you get rid of those
I asked ten freshmen students in my class what are some of the difficulties do they believe they face when writing a college essay? It took them five minutes to answer this question. As I suspected, some of the answers I receive has something in common. Some of the students’ responses, the difficulties they face to write an essay are grammatic errors, punctuations, sentence structure, and organization. Another key thing to remember is that they have problem with wording the sentences correctly. So, the reader can understand the writing clearly. Likewise, many students have details and ideas on paper. But sometimes don’t know how to organize the writing process. Other student said that they have trouble to start the first paragraph and and have a lack of motivation. I t takes them long time to start the essay. Furthermore, some answers were interested. Few students don’t want to stress their self. So, they never think to revise their final draft. One of the problems I receive is college vocabulary. One student response that his mind stuck on high school vocabulary and don’t know how to use college level vocabulary which make his essay weak. Similarly, I am really struggling with grammar error, sentence structure, run on-sentence, and organization.
When one enrolls into an honors or advanced English class, there are many worries that come to mind. These worries create thoughts such as ‘Am I a good writer?’, ‘Will I pass?’, or ‘How do I even start a paper?’. My teachers never specifically taught me to write. My teacher that I had for 9th grade English and my 10th grade honors English class always gave good grades. Once I got into my first AP English class, I felt as though my writing was inferior. In my distress, I went to the internet and I found that you do not have to be gifted in academic writing to get good grades on your essays, I found that organization is the key to writing a powerful essay.
As a result of the Civil War being a war of freedom, (combine your this is because sentence ideas here..)

In this article, “College Success” written by Bruce Beiderwell, Linda Tse, Thomas J. Lochhaas, and Nicholas B. deKanter, they explain the differences of high school and college writing, expectations of the instructors, and the types of papers that are assigned. Most students who struggle in their writing are usually still going through their transformation into college, without even knowing it. Though, how can you see these symptoms? “Students who struggle with writing in college often conclude that their high school teachers were too easy or that their college instructors are too hard” (Beiderwell, P. 1). When going into college there are all sort of ways of writing an essay, in high school you were taught the five paragraph basic

Writing an essay may seem like a huge obstacle to overcome, but with a plan of attack and a little organization, it can be easily completed. All it takes is seven easy steps.
I feel that I am a very smart student, or I would not have made it this far; and I already knew the definition of an essay; which is a piece of writing with a point or argument. Yet at the beginning of the semester I had never really given much thought to how many different types of essays there were, and I knew very little about the components that would make these sort of writings a success. However, during the semester I learned that an essay can be written from any perspective, yet it is most commonly written in the view of the first person, or third person. Likewise I knew that an essay is composed of an introductory, three bodies, and a conclusion, but there is so much more to an essay. For example the first paragraph of an essay's primary purpose is to introduce the thesis and
I see that writing an essay is like telling your audience a story that you have created yourself. The story could either be about me struggling in being accepted in Valdosta State University, or how Immokalee High school, which is the high school I had attended, began as an educational institution. The paper I typed up in high school were mostly looking up information about a historical event. For example, how Christopher Columbus had discovered America and how he was a terrible person in general. Outside the textbook and writing class, I had written multiple stories about my life and my feelings towards people. These types of stories I had written were very personal. When creating them, I started pouring my emotions into an electronic device.
While attending public schools english teachers did not begin teaching students the proper method to create a essay until the sixth grade. I never understood writing, because the stress of the state test, the teachers only taught what will earn students a successful score. In lectures, we learned to create and revise an essay. The teacher trusted student to be accurate in their corrections. By analyzing Richard Straub’s document, I have gained knowledge on where to put place my comments, how to criticize an essay and goals a responder should encounter.
Writing essays have never been easy for me. Describing my thoughts and feelings just don't seem to turn into the right words I want to say. Coming up with a theme and an argument is hard to convey, making the reader see what I'm truly trying to say. The hardest parts of writing essays for me is coming up with the right things to say that correlate to my argument and doing so under a short period of time.
Sometimes when you write an essay you feel so confident about it that you think it might bring you your fifteen minutes of fame. However, most times it just brings you fifteen minutes of disappointment when you see the grade you got. Writing is not an easy process. Just like any other skill, it requires lots of attention and lots of learning. In a way, writing is like a business. If you continue to work on it and learn new things about it, it will grow and prosper, but if you become stagnant in your learning and operations you are sure to lose everything that you’ve worked for. In that sense, Writing 101 has allowed me to continue to learn more about writing, which in turn has drastically improved it. Throughout this Writing 101 course, my
I have learned a lot of things throughout this unit. When I first started this unit I didn’t know how to write a summary, analysis or a citation properly. That scared me because I am going into college next year and I have to know these things. Now I know how to write a summary without killing it to death. I know how to write analysis even though I make them a little bit too long at times.

My experience with English has changed drastically from middle school to college. Being in middle school I have really had to do much of a big paper, but as I progressed through college I’ve realized there much more that has to be added. I had always wondered why middle school was so easy but as years went on, I realized that advancing to college there’s a lot more requirements and importance to writing. In middle school, I was young and just starting to really realize what an essay was and after high school I really understood what an essay consists of. No matter how
